Well, Brutal Legend introduced me to metal. As a genre. It effectively made me a metal head.
If you want specifics, Manowar, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath and Motorhead, just to name a few.

Saints Row 2, TT, IV for the 80s music and using them in game got into me, and that's from a person that never turns on the radio in GTA4.
Fallout 3 got me into 30-50s pop songs.
New Vegas got me into classic country (not the "singer about to start crying" type of country).

Helene Bøksle, the singer in the Age of Conan soundtrack. It's my favourite music for any kind of media ever, and much of it is thanks to her incredibly chilling voice.

They even did the theme on live television:

Fallout 3 really introduced me to proper oldies and people like Jack Shaindlin, of course I'd heard them before, even around my own house on the radio or when my parents played it but I'd never really listened to it.

I played Gone Home [http://www.gonehomegame.com/] a few weeks ago, which introduced me to "riot grrrl" punk from the 90'ies. Suffice to say, that's pretty much all I've been listening to for the last couple of weeks.

Burnout 3: Takedown is responsible for me getting into Rise Against.

Almost ten years later, they are still my favourite band.

I'm a long-haired goon in a room with metal guitars, basses and assorted equipment thanks to SSX Tricky for the GameCube. I was a young teen when I borrowed it, and the bio for my favourite character in the game (Psymon) stated that his favourite bands were Napalm Death and Slayer. So on a whim, I bought Slayer's album 'God Hates Us All', and I've been stuck ever since.

I'm not sure it had a particularly positive impact on my life, but it's had a very decisive impact!

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 introduced me to CKY with 96 quite bitter beings. Amazing guitar riff.

By the time I played the first Borderlands I'd already had half a dozen friends recommend me Cage the Elephant but Borderlands 2 has gotten me into the Heavy (who do the opening cutscene and closing credits music). Also there's a fair few songs and subsequent bands that I have been introduced to by all the Guitar Hero/ Rock Band games (WAY too many to list). Outside of those there's only the occasional song from a game that I get stuck in my head e.g. Ave Maria from Hitman, Far Away (Jose Gonzalez) from RDR, and the Skrillex song from Far Cry 3 (although it's only half as good when you're not torching a field full of weed with a flamethrower while listening to it).

Dirt2 has the best licensed music selection I've seen so far, love it.
I discovered Yeah Yeah Yeahs through it:

Bugger, just lost my whole post :-( *sigh* Try again. Great topic BTW, it's refreshing from the constant feminism threads. On with the matter at hand:

- Poets of the Fall: Lift [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOxs8-wdufE] - From the 3DMark2005 credits (IIRC). It was mindblowingly good.
- Teddybears: Cobrastyle [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBTSG_Tryhc] & Gnarls Barkley: Gone Daddy Gone [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZbeiXZVWbM] - Both from Forza 2, the one entry in the series I played that hard. Driving one of my modded cars around Maple Valley or Suzuka with these playing....*shivers* gaming bliss.
- Archive: Bullets [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6nbFZtxAL4] - From the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer. This song was a perfect choice by CD Project and I can't wait for this game.
- Drunken Whaler [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlkYz6Il4JM] from Dishonored - At least in the trailers. It literally sends shivers down my spine to hear it. A fusion of grungy rock and a nursery rhyme, I've never heard anything like it before or since, though I'd love to.
- Quiet Riot: Come on Feel the Noise [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2A6ItHeFus] - This, and all the other great 80s tracks from Vice City made it the best GTA game for many years. I think GTA5 may only just beat it for it's technical achievement, if not for the sheer fun, atmosphere and everything else.
- Outcast OST - Outcast from 1999 has a special meaning for me, coming when it did in my life. The score was played by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and is absolutely brilliant.
- Lastly, have to add "Bomb the Bass [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdfqWEqObhM]" from Xenon II. One of the earliest examples of a pumping soundtrack and it's inexorable links with the game.

Honourable mention to the scores from Robin Hood: Men of Sherwood, Once Upon a Knight, Eve Online and Jade Empire.

I now know of a gentleman by the name of Ken Ashcorp because he made a joke song about Giantdads in Dark Souls.

While it didn't introduce me to his music, Dirge of Cerberus made me realize that Gackt can make music that I like...or was it Crisis Core...?

Games made by Japanese devs and from Japan in general probably got me into J-Rock before I realized it was a genre.

I think the first game/music link for me was playing an RTS in 2000 or the late 90's. Can't even remember the game's title. The very first mission had this awesome guitar track and I played the mission over and over again just to hear it. Turns out it was 'War' by Joe Satriani.

Got the pleasure of seeing him perform live this year - about thirteen years after I first played the game. Sadly he didn't play 'War' but his other songs are just as awesome.

Need For Speed games have introduced me to some awesome music. I remember NFSU2 got me into Rise Against and QOTSA, which are two of my favourite bands.
