I'd like to start making some of my own music, does anyone know of any free but simple music making programs?

You could download the fl studio demo. It's a small download and the only limitation on the demo is that you can't save, other than that you can do anything.

It may be slightly intimating at first, though.
I'd prefer to save it, I want to keep what I make and keep using the program.

Mixcraft. Look it up it's like garageband for free.
Wicked, I will look that up. Thanks.

EDIT: Just checked it out, and you have to pay $64 to make music into mp3 files, which is the only file type I actually care about.

Just export it as a .wav file and if you have iTunes, select "Create MP3 Version" under the advanced options tab.

Also, Audacity is a good free recording software but doesn't offer anything other than somewhere to record audio. If you're looking to actually create stuff with the program, I'd suggest the demo of Reason or Ableton Live. The good software's the ones you have to pay for

Audacity does too have editing tools. You can add reverb and delay and echos and chorus effects if you're good. One of my friends uses it, and she makes some amazing stuff with it.

Does it matter whether I choose version 1.2 or 1.3?
Typically the latest version is the best, I'm not fully up on Audacity since I use ProTools, but I had it a couple of years ago for XP, then when I got my Mac I wanted to record the audio off of YouTube videos for *ahem* class projects. The newer versions had it taken out, something to do with the RIAA getting pissed at programs that can record the audio output of a computer. Perhaps a more experienced Audacity user would have more to say but typically the later versions fix bugs.

Since it's freeware, you can be almost positive the creators listen to the community feedback.

I try to avoid software altogether, but when I do Reason 4 is my thing. I've been using Reason since V 2.00 so I got it pretty much down, therefore I think I'm sticking with it for now. I leave all the recording stuff to a friend of mine who's pretty good at it.

You probably want to start with actual instrumental recordings as a baseline and use programs like FL Studio and Audacity for further editing.

if you want a decent drum machine, you could get Hydrogen [http://www.hydrogen-music.org/]

it says it's for linux, but it DOES have a windows version. I don't know how stable it is under windows, but it works fine for me.

it allows you to create drum tracks at any bpm, can vary the volume / velocity of the drum hits, comes pre-installed with some drum kits, but find your own. I used to download my drum samples from meanbeat, but they seem to have disappeared.

alternatively, for another drum machine, you could try Rhythm Rascal [http://www.rhythmrascal.com/], but the full version costs some cash. there's a free version, but it doesn't let you mix down to mp3 (get around this by recording the stereo mix through Audacity [http://audacity.sourceforge.net/])

[sub]I was about to say Ardour [http://www.ardour.org/], but you're on windows and they don't have a windows release. I've never tried it, but it looks interesting. same thing with BEAST/BSE [http://beast.gtk.org/about].[/sub]

I've found something called Jokosher [http://www.jokosher.org/download/], haven't used it but it looks kinda like Audacity. and it has a windows version.

also found Linux Multimedia Studio [http://lmms.sourceforge.net/], it DOES have a Windows version. never used it, but I've seen people recommend it before.

also found MusE [http://www.muse-sequencer.org/index.php/Main_Page], which apparently is something to do with sequencing.

really there's shitloads of stuff, you just gotta pick something out. I recommend Hydrogen [http://www.hydrogen-music.org/] and Audacity [http://audacity.sourceforge.net/].

[hr]

welp, checking out Linux Multimedia Studio [http://lmms.sourceforge.net/], seems really cool. only done a bassline so far, but there's lots of options. this one is interesting. try it.

Sony Acid, it's great, comes with it's own music samples and you can record your own into it. However you might want to have something like audacity(freeware) with any clips you put in because I don't think the audio modification is great

Get FL studio. Just downlaod the demo and then crack it. You didn't here that from me. It might be kind of complicated for a beginner, got it allows you to learn cause it's got a lot of stuff on it, and most people use it so it should be easy to find tutorials. It shoudl allow you to advance very easily.

No way you could let me know how to crack it without getting reported, is there? T_T
