Ive noticed..that when it comes to music, theres alot of it you cant like without being put into some kind of steryotype or aparently its jsut crap

for example like some bands/style all of a sudden your a wangsty emo teenager twat, like electroic/rap and its "not real music" and your obviously an idiot..like metal and your just a weirdo (and its just screaming)like anything remotely pop and WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU??

see what I mean?

but there are however certain types of music that you can get away with liking, mainly classic stuff/classic rock, like umm....the beatles, queen, johonny cash..Metalica, bob dylan (yes I know I just butchered music genres but you get my point)

I guess there are reasons for this, one being that our taste in music matures, and some angsty or fluffy pop-hit no longer sounds as good or meaning fulas It did when you were younger

so for discussion value what music do you think is generally "universially" liked...AND more importantly, do your tastes fovour that kind of stuff?[/B]

persoanlly (and because of this I porbably have horrbile taste in music or whatever) I generally am not into "classic" stuff that everyone loves..sure its good (you know, so Im told) but its not somthing I listen too over and over again/love...(that said I do dig johnny cash)

plus this kind of "old-school eilitism" is somthign Ive always hated, whcih means I like certain stuff even less (Piano man by billy joel just shits me now..for some reason)

that said I think my taste in music is developing, and Im still branching out (like looking into more obscure stuff)

EDIT: and Ive just had another thourght, is that music also well liked, perhaps because of its mainstream apeal?

There is no type of music that is universally liked. The closest thing, by definition, is whatever qualifies as "popular music" for the time period.

I will say, however, that rap is not an acceptable form for anyone to like because it is almost OBJECTIVELY NOT MUSIC. Seriously, the only part of it people care about is the lyrics, which is just poetry. If the only important component of a "musical genre" is a non-musical component, how can you honestly classify it as music?

......I cant like rap because its "not music" by YOUR definition?

people care about BOTH the lyrics and the production....in a good rap/hip hop song BOTH are good

anyway I dont want to start a flamewar based on music preference

He never said you couldn't like it, he just said it's not technically "music" by definition. I like rap, I love rap, but I absolutely agree that it isn't music.

Anyway, OT: absolutely nothing can be "universally liked", even popular music can't be, because there will always be a huge amount of people who generally despise popular music (me being one of them).

The closest I've seem anything being universally acepted is Hip-Hop, due to me seeing people far outside its demegraphic liking it.

"Universally" but only by certain people. i.e, Gaming is universally liked by gamers, so a music genre or band would be universally liked (theoretically) by its own fanbase.

Personally I listen to Metal, lots of it, and no the blast beat screamo, real metal like 3IOB and ManoWar, Iced Earth, Pyramaze etc.

It's true, we held a meeting to decide the music that has a universal appeal and is generally agreed upon. This was no small task, but we came up with four obvious choices:

I hope that helps.

what i mean is (and mabye I hsould have explained it better) is that no one is going to critizise you for gushing about bob dylan or the beatles because stuff like that..even from that era is considered TEH BEST EVA!!! particually by older people AND people who think their taste in music is awsome

where as I might say I like linkin park and all of a sudden Im a wanngty teen (well mabye from back then anyway)

I don't think it's possible for any genre to be universally liked. The closest would be what "pop" music. I for one hate pop music, I feel that most of it is shallow and unoriginal.

Overall my music taste is pretty open, though I prefer Industrial or anything with a decent beat.

Just to give you an idea of what I like.

I always get pretty embarrassed when somebody "catches" me listening to the crazy metal and techno that I like. I can really get into something with a story (Ensiferum, Iron Savior, what-have-you), and I know that the person hearing it for the first time doesn't get it, doesn't want to get, and will ridicule me for it, and hey, we're all human. Ridicule hurts. That's why people do it.

...Though this one time back in the summer of aught-four I pulled up to a stoplight and the girl in the car next to me was listening to Britney Spears (I think), and I drowned her out with that awful metal remix of the Imperial March so that she tore off the line the second the light changed so she wouldn't have to listen to it anymore.

"The Best EVAH" is determined by whomever is forty years old at the time. Listen to what's playing in the thoroughfares these days. It' been shifting from '60s to '70s to '80s. I swear, if I hear She Blinded me With Science one more time, you'll hear the sound of a rusty gate closing, and then my head will just roll onto the floor.

By the way, I'd call beat poetry the absolute zero of music. I personally like a lot of performers who sing-talk, like Kompressor. My sister once referred to him as "rapping" just for lack of a better word. You know poetry when you hear it. Even when it's bad, it doesn't sound like prose or technical writing. you can get yourself into a lot of trouble defining music as anything more specific than right-brained sonic expression, but then, that's too general. So in the end it's kind of pointless to say that one thing is music and another isn't. Everyone knows what a mountain is, and everyone knows what a valley is, but even a geologist can't tell you where one begins and the other ends.

I know what you mean, persoanlly music is a private thing for me....I generally dont play it in front of others

which can be problematic if people insist on using YOUR playlist as a scource of music

Skinny Puppy is a really old Industrial band from 1981, Canadians. They're considered one of the pioneers for bringing the genre from Europe to North America. A lot of their music is influenced by a group called Throbbing Gristle and generally deal with unpopular political topics. For example, they have a song regarding the VX Gas Attack in Iraq during the 80's as well as entire albums devoted to anti animal cruelty and drug addiction.

Not only that, but Nine Inch Nails opened for them on tour in 1988. They're a highly influential band and I strongly suggest looking into them if you're interested. I can even suggest albums.

This is a good point, and if I remember, before gangster rap hit it big, rap was just street poetry. Hell, my uncle was in a circle of friends that rapped for fun.
