I was thinking about the significantly diverse bands that I listen to (The Fall of Troy, Hellogoodbye, This Providence, Regina Spektor), and it made me think about how judgemental I can be of people that listen to certain types of music; I often instantly label people that listen to dance music and hip hop as intellectually inferior, those that listen to Death Metal as academically lackadaisical, those that listen to acoustic as attempting to appear deep and emotional (I would like it noted that I listen to at least a little of all these genres myself, so yes I'm a giant hypocrite).

I was wondering how much the escapists think you can tell about a person by the type of music they listen to. Do certain genres imply certain personalities to you?

If you'd like to sum me up using genres, this is what I listen to nearly all of the time:
The Fall of Troy
Hellogoodbye
This Providence

(I also highly suggest you look these bands up. Maybe not This Providence, that's just me, but the other two are lifelong lovers of mine.)

Oh, and I do get to know people and reevaluate my thoughts on them, it's just first impressions when talking about music.

It's pretty easy to stereotype people who listen to different types of music.

But I'd say it's more of the fashion statement the music makes rather than the actual music itself.

You can't tell a person by their music. I can listen to angry sounding music, but am I an angry person? No.

What do you mean? As in, liking certain types of music because it's the trend to do so?
As I mentioned, I like a hugely varied plethora of music that would all be associated with very different "fashion statements". I don't think I actually fit into any specific category thinking about it.

I don't define myself by songs I like. I define myself by songs I write. That makes it much easier to be a clearly defined person.

OT, though, I listen to a lot of Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Audioslave, and White Stripes.
There you go. Define away and I'll laugh at the misconceptions. ^_^

I have a rather short fuse and listen to Slipknot and other such extreme types. My music reflects my personality, but it doesn't influence it.

Oh, sorry misunderstood the OP.

Yeah, I do this as well, especially with pop music. I've just seen so many people defend it, I've gotten fed up the genre because I can't seem to find anybody that enjoys it that has a long thought process.

You sound very much like my kinda guy. Except the White Stripes. As a drummer, I can't allow myself to listen.

I'm gonna go; academically able, but lacks enthusiasm. I can obviously take from "songs I write" that you're creative; just call me Columbo.

If I were to make a broad generalization, I would say that a lot of the music I listen to represents certain aspects of my personality - bands like Pink Floyd represent my calm, laid-back demeanour; all the alternative and indie rock I listen to represents my nerdier, quirkier side; the metal and punk I listen to represents my aggressive side (I rarely ever show it, but it's still there - how appropriate as metal and punk aren't very apparent in my music collection).

In my case, the music I listen to does reflect my personality (at least in some ways).

In a way you can, but if I listen to punk then people expect me to be loud, obnoxious and have a mohawk.

Here are a few that I'd say sum me up quite nicely:

Radiohead, Between the Buried and Me, Coheed and Cambria, Pixies, The Smiths, and early Weezer.

Make of that what you will.

Also, any time I hear someone blasting horrible autotuned "rap", I can generally predict, with 75% accuracy, that I really, really won't like that person.

I listen to heavy metal, jass fusion, classic rock, prog rock, and golden-age hip hop.

theres pretty much no fucking way someone can determine what my personality is based on that.

Yeah, I automatically categorize people that listen to clubby music as incompetent, moronic douche-bags. Irony: I actually like Lady Gaga and I'd be lieing if I didn't admit the music's catchy. Still, if you're playing "SHAKE THAT ASS FOR ME, SHAKE THAT ASS FOR ME" so loud in your headphones that I can hear it five seats down on the subway with my own headphones on, you need to stop.

What would sum me up? Depends on my mood, and my moods are represented by Beastie Boys, Ensiferum, Finntroll, Beatles, and Arctic Monkeys. Make of that what you will.

I'm kind of the opposite of the Metalhead stereotype... I just like the music for it's technical proficiency and general...um... Crunchiness...

Musical sterotypes are easily bent by people who listen to every kind of genre ever. Well, not all of them, but any time it's more then three, the whole theory gets pushed away.

I mostly listen to metal I suppose, but I'm not that angry. I am condescending, and believe that I think more then most people my age, but that's just who I am. I don't really think there is a link between what you listen to and who you are.

I'm also more of a fan of metal for the skill required, and the sheer "heavy/crunch" factor. I don't care for the constant streams of vitriol or angst that can frequently pop up, but I do really like a good vocal performance, amazing drumming, or sweet guitarness.

I originally hated the vocalists in most metal bands, but they, like the darker tone of the genre, have started to grow on me for some reason...

I listen to a lot of music, but I wouldn't sterotype me. Everything I listen to I don't listen to deep enough to get into the culture of it all. I listen to Hip Hop, Metal and Eletronica the most but I'm not a gangsta, a metalhead or a raver (is that even a thing?). Having said that, when someone walks around with a bunch of piercings, a chocker collar and a Cradle of Filth shirt it's hard not to sterotype.

Overall, as a musician I feel its important for me to get into as much music as I can, I don't want to let culture say what I can and can't listen to.
