MW2 - why are people STILL playing?

I know what you mean, I don't see the appeal of MW2 either, but I understand that other people do (The reason escapes me but hey, never mind). I was talking to my friend about this earlier today actually and we were saying that it's not so much that I don't want people to play MW2, clearly they enjoy it, but I wish they'd play other games so prolifically too. What bugs me is the monopoly games like MW2 have over the on-line communities like Xbox Live and PSN because it makes it more difficult for other less 'massive' games to get their own following.

Still MW2 is considered to be popular and it just grabbed peoples attention in the gaming world. Therefore it became the default online FPS for friends to play together. Why it is played is obvious... it is why the XBox 360 still has people playing it: Modern Warfare 2 came before Battlefield Bad Company too.
If the XBox 360 was released after the PS3 (and the PS3 was cheaper) then it would have such a smaller audience because it would not have been what everyone flocked to buy. (But I digress)
3rd party factors are involved in why it is the default... how good a game it is plays little part of it...
I don't understand why people keep playing and buying the COD games, I could understand if they were the best online shooters but they're not. I played the hell out of COD4 when it came out, and it may have been the best online shooter at the time. However, I never even thought about getting the next COD game because I've had my fill of COD gameplay and I'm not gonna play the same game again, and it's not really that deep anyways. After COD4, I moved onto Metal Gear Online and I haven't stopped playing MGO because no other online game has eclipsed MGO yet (I'm hoping that maybe SOCOM 4 can do it). I played MAG, and it is by far the best FPS this gen. The game itself great but the players during the IGN tournament (extend BETA pretty much) made me not buy the game because very few people actually helped the team win and knew how to properly play. The team sizes in MAG are just too big to properly coordinate teamwork to 100+ random players over the Internet.
I dislike, others enjoy it. Not that hard to think about it. As someone else, said, get over yourself.
Challenge. Leveling up. Meeting with friends. Addiction. Not having another game to go to. Not having the money or hardware to get another game. Lack of interest in everything else.Josh12345 said:

And why are we still making MW2 threads? I've hardly seen a BC2 thread, and there are still a flotilla of MW2 threads, even though it came out a few monthes before BC2 did.
Some people like it. I don't really see how you can enjoy it (then again, if you play like an asshole or to win you get rewarded, sooo...), but people do, so that's why they're still playing. That simple, really.
^This. And the whole "even though they're underage"... I don't get it. I honestly don't. Barring having absolutely no upbringing, moral teachings or just a mom/dad saying "monkey see monkey do is a bad thing when looking at a TV/computer screen", why is that such a big deal?Sassafrass said:

Seriously, people don't play games they don't like because they're all a bunch of masochists. They play games because they like them. The amount of people still playing Modern Warfare 2 means that there are a hell of a lot of people that still enjoy it. As for why they enjoy it, well, I suppose it's because they find it fun.

Besides, the MW2ers of today will be the gaming visionaries of tomorrow. Almost all of us indulge in stuff regarded as pop crap when we're younger. Once they're done with that game they'll be looking for something else, and some of them will go onto games you'll like even less and some of them will go on to games you'll like more. That's just how it works.

Because of this most people who try to transfer from COD to BF:BC2 find it hard.
Still once you understand how the system works it is not harder. I actually found it easier than COD because you just need to be more conservative with your style and not run around with 2 sub machine guns blazing.
Granted, while a lot of us thinks MW2 is a terrible and unbalanced game, people do find it fun and it's always a lot more fun when you play with friends.
