How has nobody mentioned the Leonards Regret mission from Drakengard yet? It involves child soldiers and you play as a mass murdering sociopath. You get one guess as to what you have to do as the mission objective

Compared to what you had to do there, this is pretty fucking tame...plus, last i checked, Drakengard didn't get any flak for that mission so i guess i don't see why Cod gets called out on it.

Honestly I've seen this before hand and i just giggled. not because i'm a desensitized prick. (that's a completely other issue) but because it's a terribly done cut scene. Maybe it hurts more within the context of the game, but you don't see the kid or her mom dying, the truck blowing up is just kind of hilarious and you drop like a bag of bricks. it's just silly. So i wouldn't get my panties in a knot over a single death of some 00001111010101 kid. It's a bad attempt at controversy and we all know it's going to be on the news and make the game sell millions. but unless you the character a belt tie up the kid and beat and rape her. there is nothing truely controversial about this.

Pffft, big deal.

No, I don't anything will happen this time because:

a) You're not doing anything to the child. Its a cutscene. Most of the controversy in games revolves around the fact that you're actually doing the action, like in MW2, you actually pull your trigger on the controller to kill the civilians.

b) The part of me that still has faith in humanity says that most people will see it as it is-an explosion occurs, and the girl disappears into the mist. You don't see her get impaled on a spike, or a bullet go through her head. That same exact same thing happens in a popular action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger "Collateral Damage".

The optimist in me is pretty much desperately shushing the cynic in me, because lets face it - Fox News. But one can always hope.

I just think kid killing in general is beyond low. I don't care how "subtle" it is, if the kid dies thats evil. I know its probably suppose to generate an emotional reaction, and I am definately pissed, but I don't think the world is ready for a game that shows kids getting their legs blown off by a mine.

I'm just glad it had a happy ending :D

OT: I can see they're attempting to add gravitas to the story but it was done cheaply as the main character has no actual ties to the people being killed - it's just there for shock factor which does make it unnecessary to show.

Didn't Yahtzee call this back in his MW2 review?

That's a little funny.
Is the kid in the explosion an apple cheeked cub-scout trying to earn money for his grandma's dialysis machine?

One of the missions better make you stomp on a puppy.

It's not even slightly controversial. As someone else said in another thread, you don't see the kid choking to death, nor anyone else doing the same. Just her and her mother disappearing in a cloud of green smoke, while the dad falls over and seemingly dies instantly, without any gasping breathes or choking sounds.

To be honest, TV shows have scenes that are a lot more controversial then that one. :p
I know what you mean; I was watching CSI, the one in Las Vegas, and they showed a decomposing baby on the show. I don't think this will be as controversial

I think I'm actually interested in the game now!

...

HAAAHAAHAA~ OOhh God... I almost kept a straight face there... *Whew*!

Back On Topic: Really this changes nothing... Ever since I heard that they were officially gonna make another Modern Warfare instead of killing it off like decent human beings I knew that they would try and 1-up the whole "No Russian" thing... It just seems that they failed miserably!

They should have had a scene where you play a terrorist who has to kill a child with his bare hands! Now THAT would be a controversy!

throw in an achievement for doing it without hesitation for bonus points...

No where near as contraversal as many, many, other games, movies etc and where is the name change? Seriously, you know whats worse then there being a lazy cliche in a massively hyped up game? Having it spoilt early so I now know what to expect. COD doesn't have much going for it in the story, so every little bit lost is pretty annoying to me...

Man I loved that game!

Isn't there an ending where you have to kill giant flying babies that are devouring everybody???

...and don't you get brutally killed in all the endings? I don't think I found one where I lived happily ever after...

Wow! You are really over stating it. She exploded in a dramatic way, while I expected some strange men with accent to jump out of that truck, yell,"INFIDELS!" and shoot the girl the face.
Way over stated!

I for one am glad that some games are willing to push the boundary on "what is right and what is wrong".

MW2 had "No Russian", where you helped wipe out an entire airport full of civilians and start WW3.

Black Ops had you shove a piece of glass into someone's mouth and then punch him in the face.

And MW3 has three random civilians(one of whom is a kid) getting blown up by a random truck bomb.

If this is an attempt to create controversy, I'm really not impressed.

whenever "controversy" and call of duty come up in the same sentence it reminds me of the time i failed the nuke scene in modern warfare because i was too stupid to climb out of the helicopter so all i saw of the devastation was the black inside and the vaguely red/orange sky through the door. Than i died.

on topic. so a kid vanishes in green smoke. there were people hunting me down for actively killing children in fallout 2.

It's pointless and stupid. Modern Warfare 3 is just trying to make itself appear more gritty and visceral than it actually is by adding in meaningless moments where people die. If this is ACTUALLY part of the game, then I'm definitely not going to buy it since they'll probably be using this same tactic multiple times throughout the singleplayer.

... Thank god, only american women and children were killed. I'd have had real trouble feeling any sympathy for them had they been any other nationality. I mean they definitely couldn't just be english, because then who would give a shit?

In case it isn't clear, I dislike that video intensely on many levels.

The teaser in Dead Island was 10x harder to swallow than this.

You don't even see the body after. I don't see what the big controversy is.

e; Been here for a year. Finally started posting. Can anyone tell me why the hell my avatar is broken? It's 65x65.

I don't understand why the media are pissy about this. Children die all around the world every day (and normally shown on the news), its already in films and other media but just because its a game it gets a bad rep?
