While it is true that Nero's moveset is quite a bit smaller than Dante's i have to give Capcom credit for making him very different from Dante. Special mention going to his Devil Trigger.
He was different, sure. Like I said I had fun playing him. I still would have preferred to have Virgil back. :/

Have a look at S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Relatively realistic combat in an utterly unrealistic setting. You can have a realistic and unrealistic game at the same time.

Depends on the genre for me, realistic racing, I'm all for that shit, I love a realistic racing simulator over an arcade one any day of the week..

Shooters on the other hand, well I prefer the over the top, health regenerating, bullet spraying, Bunny hopping, teabagging fun that is the unrealistic side of the equation, the Call of Duties, the Halos, the Borderlands and the Team Fortresses of the world, the closest to realism I want to get is Counter Strike, that for me finds the perfect happy medium. I have tried a few realistic shooters, Operation Flashpoint was one, and running for 2km through boring terrain without ever seeing an enemy, hiding in cover and occasionally leaning out to shoot at a small head on the horizon doesn't really do it for me.

So I'm not opposed to the idea, but as long as they don't sacrifice fun for realism I'm happy.

'realistic game' ... now there's a good oxymoron. I play games for fun and, because I didn't think the Marvel/ DC comics weren't quite violent enough. As for realistic games...well I can't think of any. Modern Warfare is a series in which you can be shot dozens of times within a campaign. Many shooters offer regenerating health which was a cheat back in the 90's I believe.

uh...I'm tired and my point is gone. I play games for fun and I'll stop now. Some games for story but not all. I love Metal Gear Solid but hated MGS4. Heavy Rain was a good rental exclusive title. The last Final Fantasy I really got into was IX (my favorite ironically was Mystic Quest)

I like realism because it's easier to be immersed in a game I can instantly relate to. Like someone said there is no mutual exclusivity. There are terrible realistic games, terrible unrealistic games and fun ones from both.

Realism can actually help immensely with immersion.
Fake realism like iron sights in completely unrealistic games like Call of Duty however can take you out of the experience. In a stylized video game like TF2 it's no big deal, if your enemy survives 5 rockets to the face, but it's very annoying if he does so in a game that looks realistic.

Properly done realism however is extremely immersive.

There is a Half Life 2 / Source mod called "Resistance and Liberation" (world war 2 shooter) that is even more realistic than stuff like Operation Flashpoint, Red Orchestra or Arma 2.
- No hud elements whatsoever. no crosshair, no ammo indicator (if u want to see how many magazines u have left, u have to hold "b" to see your belt), no health indicator, no minimap, no compass, nothing.
- no kill messages and no score. Did u get shot by a sniper or rifleman? did you just kill a teammate? which uniform was he wearing?
- realistic local area voice communication and chat. Voice comm gets quieter the further u are away from the player who is using it. U can't communicate with your teammates if they are too far away. Enemies can hear u too.... That voice chatter from the upper floor of that building might be enemies.
- realistic bullet ballistics, iron sight sway, etc.
- no jumping over fences like you're an olympic athlete. if you want to get over a fence with 10-20kg of gear on you: climb.
- realistic damage (a broken ankle will slow you down and your cries of pain will be audible to the enemy . A shot in the arm will make u drop your weapon and make aiming very difficult if you pick it up again, a shot in the body means death in most cases. Even if you survive a hit, you are dazed for a short time.)
- moral and stress simulation. You can't see, hear or shoot straight if you just narrowly avoided death. Nearby teammates will raise moral and reduce the impact of stress
etc. etc.

Sounds boring? Yet another ww2 shooter?
no. It's nothing less than the most immersive first person shooter out there.

I like a little of both... At just the right mixture a game can become that much more phenomenal to me. I can handle more unrealistic stuff than realistic stuff though...

I'll use Project Reality (BF2 Mod) as an example: I tried really hard to get into it considering that's the only FPS my RL friend liked to play but of course, hence it's name, it was too realistic for me to actually have fun with... I'm not downing the game at all i'm sure it's fantastic for people other than myself, I just didn't prefer the long waiting times for just about everything in it.

Realism isn't a bad thing by any means, but I find that I like things more on the fantastic side of real, if not completely beyond it. Same reason people watch fireworks and look at the stars. Or dream of underwater exploration and space travel. Things that are just different from the things we are used to, almost to the point where they seem unreal or dreamlike.

I hate realism. Complete realism is unattainabl, so why even bother? Go to the Onion if you want to see what Call of Duty should be like if they want to be realistic.

Realism means less awesomesauce, more grey and brown, and less entertaining.

I generally prefer non-realistic, but eliminating all realistic games wouldn't be the best.

Somehow, people enjoy realism. I don't know why, but I don't feel like taking it away from them.

I'm fairly easy... realising or something outrageous, as long as the gameplay is enthralling and entertaining I am a happy bunny *twitch*

I like realism within the context of the universe that I'm in. E.g. I know laser guns and space ships isn't at all realistic, but within the contexts of a sci-fi game, it does make sense, and magic in say Fable III. It's when you get things like the alien endings in Silent Hills, I understand they were not to be taken seriously, it's just an example. Another better example I would use would be Just Cause 1 and 2, that fact it's set in a fairly realistic modern day setting, and yet he can use his grappling hook in that way. I know it's all for entertainment purposes, but it doesn't quite settle with me

Fellow escapists Why do we play vidoe games for entertainment? a way to kill time? or to escape reality for a bit.
I play games to escape so why are games all trying to be more realistic when all I want to do in a game is get lost in it. And so I ask you escapists do you embrace or fight the realistic game?
Embrace or fight? for fucks sake what kind of melodrama is this?

You know you can have both? there are games that *GASP* cater to different people than you? and that the entire medium doesn't bend over backwards just because someone doesn't like Game A over Game B?

No problem with um, realistic games usually appeal to the people who enjoy what they are mimicking. so if (par say) you dont like hockey, then NHL games arent going to appeal to you. I can still appreciate their attempts to be as realistic as possible without hurting gameplay.

But regardless of realistic of stylised, in the long run its all about anesthetics, Doees the game look and feel right? A game can be low on graphics but high on anesthetics, if you dont get what im saying watch the extra credits segment on anesthetics.

Minecrafftttttt!!!
