Well, depending on the woman, it can be a moderate backache and general crabiness (I myself only get about this severe) or a fire monster with a really bad flu (best friend has this. Thankfully, she never goes out at that time of the month).
So talk to her about beating off, farting, or belching. OH! Pooping, talk to her about your favourite dumps. There is nothing like a good poop sometimes.

in all seriousness though, I've only ever had that problem with a girl that wasn't my gf. She would come up to me and say "Period blood." over and over until finally my gf at the time would tell her that it was gross and she'd go back to how she normally was, which included kicking me in the chins and such.
My current gf actually only brought it up once a little over a month ago say, "Yeah, if I'm on my period, I might get a little snappy, so don't take it personally." That was about the extent of it.
I once had to do a presentation in anatomy (my class was about 80% female) about menstruation (curse my luck for drawing that from the hat >.>). Yeah...I blushed the whole way through because girls where either trying to hold in a laugh or glaring at me. My guess is that the ones glaring were on or near their periods.
You could also tell your gf to leave since her menstruating vagina is staining the carpet/floor/chair/etc. She might not laugh, but I'd almost be willing to bet anyone around would. XD

It's quite a common subject and I'm betting if your penis hurt on a monthly basis, you wouldn't constantly stoically withhold the information from her either, especially if/when it got bad. Not to mention, constantly soiling yourself with blood and needing to wear what's essentially a part diaper (or a blood soaking plug, whichever notion you find more appealing) every month kinda sucks. Also, God forbid you get it without having a tampon/pad on you cause you know, those things don't come on a timer per se. If you ever saw a girl with her pants covered in blood, you'll know what I mean, it's not a happy experience for her :\
On how much it hurts... it depends. It really does, it depends on both the person and the period in particular. Frequency, length, amount of times it hurts and pain intensity all vary as does the way in which each girl handles it. I know girls who deal with most of it for a single morning/early afternoon (and even then it's not too much pain to bear) and then it's mostly a breeze after, while others can be in harder pains on and off for a whole week or so. Herbal teas and targeted analgesics help, but again, it still depends on person/situation how much of an edge it can take off.
As for being disgusted by it... well I can't really force an opinion on you, but there's not much to be disgusted by. It's blood. You ever cut your finger and then sucked on it? Surely your gums bled from something at some point in your life and you tasted it in your mouth? Pretty much the same shit. Unless you're working in a lab and running the stuff through tests, you generally ain't gonna notice much difference aside from an occasional clot and even that's nothing unusual. It's not like she gets stabbed down there by something every month and bleeds from a wound, it's a natural occurrence, nothing out of the ordinary.
Besides, you're talking about being bothered by talk of it... I can understand not really feeling randy when your girlfriend has a period or not wanting to perform oral sex on her (not that either is uncommon or realistically awful in general), but just talking about it... get over it - for your own sake as well as her's (and any other girl you're gonna be with throughout your life)
