We can't call it a game.
Not enough gameplay
We can't call it a movie.
A movie has a set in stone plot.
It sounds more like one of those old "Create your own stories book."

Now would we be willing to pay, what $60 dollars for a movie that could tell a better story?
And in gameplay aspects, it sounds like one giant quick time event.

Something that doesn't sound like I would be getting my $60 buck.

Just because you can go outside wearing neon lights, doesn't mean you should.

Thoughts on the game?

I've already expressed my opinion on this gam several time. I'm not going to do it again. So I apologize for being lazy, but I'm just going to copy what I've said in previous threads.

As I have said before, I am still on the fence about this game. On one hand it has potential, but I haven't seen any good utilization of this potential so far. But that may be because the trailers are a mis-representation of the final product.

My biggest gripe with my game has to be the gameplay, or rather the lack of it. Think about how advanced gaming has gotten. Think of the variety of different ways we have seen stories told over the years and how these games have let players interact with these stories. Cage looked at all of this, and then thought that the best way to tell his story was through the use of quick-time events. This, from the look of things, have reduced all of the gameplay to an advanced version of Simon-says. The game looks like a movie that requires you to mash some buttons to progress the plot.

In my experience, quick-time events in cut scenes are very tedious the second time around as you already know what to expect. This could make slogging through the same cut-scenes feel very tedious on a second play through. You could argue that because the story changes based on the players actions that this isn't to big of a problem, but that in itself is a separate problem. I have seen little to indicate that the player will have a major impact on the game's story. So far the only interaction I have seen consists of choosing from a variety of different actions like in Mass Effect, but I haven't seen evidence to suggest that this has much impact on the ultimate outcome of each situation. If the player interactions arte really as weak as the trailers have suggested, then I feel that this game will be very poor because of it.

And another thing that bugs me, though not as much as the game's other issues, are the graphics. This is mostly in relation to the appearance of the characters. Sometimes they look fine, other times they just seem strange and stumble into he uncanny valley. This usually occurs when the camera closely focuses on a character's face, or in an action scene, for they show how clunky and unnatural many of the character animations look. Normally I wouldn't chastise a game for this, but considering the type of game Heavy Rain is trying to be then it will be a problem.

Though despite my skepticism I do hope that this will turn out great. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Note: Just so you know, by this point I have watched many trailers for the game. However, the trailer bellow showcases many of the issues I mentioned earlier.

What exactly is ambitious about Heavy Rain?

Sorry, about that, I just fell into the uncanny valley and got attacked by the characters from this game as they tried to claw thier way out.
Oh good. I thought I was the only person who thought that this game had mediocre visuals.

As for whether it's worth $60 or not, people should just rent it to see if they would really want to buy it.

My only issue with it is that it isn't on the Xbox, so I can't play it. Other than that It looks alright.

Ehh the game looks interesting enough, I don't have a PS3 though and no amount of God of War or MAG or Heavy Rain can get me to fork out the money, so I guess you can say I don't think it's worth it.

Not saying that movies automatically have a better story then games.
Trust me, compare underworld to Half-life 2...
But, Movies can have a better story then Heavy Rain...

But you do say that, in the OP.

Still, you can't have the same level of immersion in movies and games. Seeing as games are interactive.

I liked Indigo Prophecy. I think that's a good enough reason to want to play Heavy Rain.

I've heard that if a character dies, they're dead for good.

But what happens if all four die?
You've wasted good money on a game you can't play anymore.

This game looks like machinima with button pressing sequences.

I simply have gotten very jaded from all the "Art-Boy" (a subspecies of Fanboy that I just named) hype around the game. Don't get me wrong many a great game have great arty quality but great arty quality doesn't mean a great game automatically. Sorry if I'm sounding prickish but its how I feel at the moment, must be from lack of sleep.

Plus the fact that the game is based around QTE means that the prompts should be very visible. This doesn't seem to have been implemented since all of the prompts are small, neutrally colored, and placed in awkward positions on the screen IMHO. This coupled with the fact that you die once with the character and they are bacon for the rest of the game leaves me to believe that I'll have to be starting allover many times, this isn't ideal in my mind.

Considering how much I loved Indigo Prophecy I'm really excited about Heavy Rain.
You guys are talking as if this is the only game that's been a "choose your own adventure" book. By no coincidence, they're made by the same company.

See, I was, at one point, willing to get this game because it sounded like an interesting concept. Until I noticed it's a PS3 exclusive. Didn't seem like it was worth buying new hardware. Then you said $60...yeah, I'm not getting it.

My thoughts are that the game is a unique, highly cinematic experience, and for someone who likes games as a means to tell a great story, it is definitely worth the 60 bucks. When you consider all the possible endings you can get, it's very replayable, and I eagerly await it, and I have to wonder if the game would have this much scrutiny if it weren't on just the PS3.

I think it looks great and just so you all know its not QTEs, its like a point and click adventure but instead of pointing and clicking, every button on the controller controls a different part of the characters body also everything you do affects the game and where the story goes, it's doing something new and I hope it works cause I've preordered it

It's not a movie, it's just...different. It is so unique that gamers have trouble recognizing it, and I applaud it for the experimentation.

I'm just going to be unoriginal and repost what I put in the other forum:

Seriously, I have to say that you don't need cut-scenes to tell a great story in a game, in fact, gaming has it's own particular method of storytelling that suits it best [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_236/6999-Gordon-Freeman-Private-Eye].

In an ideal world, the only time a cut-scene would be needed in a game would be when you don't want the player to have control(the scene in Bioshock where Ryan orders you around to show your mental control), and since Heavy Rain is a game that has been constantly bringing up how much control you have, cut-scenes would be abolished if this was half the revolutionary game it says it is.

After looking up the game a bit, I have to say that constant cut-scenes/QTE's would be the opposite of what a game heavy rain in story would need.

That said, I don't have that much of a problem with QTE's for gameplay purposes, but putting it in something to do with the story would just be distracting and annoying.

I'll wait until the reviews come out, I'd need at least an 8.5/10 average to convince me.
Sidenote: That's actually the first time I've seen the gameplay.

Not only does it look boring, the story looks half-assed as well.

And another thing, didn't that guy's face(the guy that was being interrogated) stretch much too far when it was animating?
