I was thinking about how there are a lot of great games that get overshadowed by big titles like call of duty or battlefield. What are some great underrated games?

Here is my list:

Ico
Kirby: The Crystal Shards (have not played Return to Dreamland Yet)
Cave Story
Pokemon Snap
Yoshi's Story
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
Sonic Generations
007 Nightfire
3D Dot Game Heroes
Alan Wake

Edit: If anyone cares, I was thinking of starting a lets play channel where I play underrated games

DJ Hero 2.

Seriously, if you have even a passing interest in the style of music featured in the game, give it a try. Many, like myself, poo-pooed it at first glance, thinking it would be a hollow Guitar Hero clone for Activision to print more money.

It ended up being one of my favorite rhythm games of all time. Who'd have thunk it?

Not underrated by anyone who has played it, but maybe it is flying under the radar a little.

To The Moon.

Alan Wake. Great game but its dismal sales doomed its chance of a true sequel. What a shame.

Atelier Iris series (PS2) (Great JRPG where you create all your items and such)
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters (PS2) (Think a squad based, more morbid Disgaea)
The Darkness (PS3/X360) (FPS with demons and a great story)
Terranigma (SNES) (JRPG with real time combat and you've gotta save the world, one species at a time)

Yoshi's Story
3D Dot Game Heroes
These are the four I've played out of your suggested X. Anyway I'm going to start with the fact that I didn't give 3D-Dot Game Heroes a chance. A bit unfair but I plan on trying it again later on. I loved Yoshi's Story, which was like Yoshi's Island only without Baby-Mario screwing things up. Pokemon Snap was that one game I really wanted as a kid and bought later on in life (a few months ago) and even though I beat it pretty quickly once I got it, it was a really fun little diversion. I have Crystal Shards too but I haven't beaten that one yet...

---

As for games I've played that are under-rated and think other people should try out...well, I haven't got many...If you liked Pokemon Snap you may also like Hakuna Matata (or Afrika) which is Pokemon Snap only with actual animals and an open world. Obscure is another one that I think would press some people's joy buttons. It's similar to Alan Wake in that you harm monsters by shining lights on them but it's about 5 high school students, all of whom are playable and depending on how many survive or die, you get different endings.

Startopia: A very solid management sim set on a space station with a variety of amusing alien races, a fair bit of humor and a whole lot of options. Also some combat. Unfortunately it didn't do well and the company went under.

Dungeon Keeper: A game made by Peter Molyneux before he lost his groove. A wonderfully different RTS where you control a dungeon full of monsters all of who go about their daily business in addition to the whole killing adventurers thing because let's face it, sometimes a dragon just needs to sleep and lord knows you better make sure you pay it on time. There was a sequel so obviously it did decently, but the series ended there.

Freelancer: A modern take on a space sim that works with a mouse, has a massive open world and has a pretty solid plot. Yes please.

Freedom Force: A campy squad based super hero game with classic golden age comic book style plots? FOR FREEDOM! Again, there was a sequel but no word on a third installment despite the fact they left a wonderful plot hook just sitting there, so odds are the sequel didn't do very well.

Psychonauts: It's set in a psychic summer camp and the main character is a kid who ran AWAY from the circus. Why has this game NOT sold better... besides the fact that there are part of it that are made insanely difficult by the controls that are sometimes a bit clunky.
