Name Your Kid Jason, Win Free Games

Having a baby? Finding it difficult to settle on a name? Rise of the Argonauts [http://www.codemasters.com] tie-in to help make your decision a little easier.

The name Jason is of Greek origin, derived from iasthai, which means "to heal." It was adopted as an English name in the 17th century and while it remains popular in the U.S., its use has dropped off dramatically in the U.K., where it no longer ranks among the 50 most popular names for boys. Codemasters finds this situation intolerable; thus, a quest worthy of the Argonauts [http://www.argonauts.ca/] themselves: To bring Jason back in 2009!

Entering the contest is a simple, three-part process. Step one: Have a baby. Step two: Name it Jason. Step three: Fax, mail or email a copy of the birth certificate indicating that your newborn child was in fact named Jason to [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] and you'll be entered into the draw for a year's supply of Codemasters videogames on the platform of your choice.

"These days, babies' names are influenced by celebrities - and there aren't that many famous Jasons any more," said Codemasters Director of Communications Richard Eddy. "We hope our Rise of the Argonauts hero can act as a 'virtual' star, encouraging new parents to rejuvenate this once-great English name. Jasons, friends of Jasons and anyone interested in onomastics should keep an eye on the blog over the coming weeks, as we document our quest to re-populate the nation with Jasons."

relevant and cool [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001673/], this just seems weird.

The contest is open to citizens of the U.K. only, but if you happen to be knocked up in ol' Blighty and want a shot at some free Codemasters swag, or if you just want to see how things are going for the Jasons of the world, keep an eye on Codemasters' Argonautical blog at bringbackjason.com [http://www.bringbackjason.com/].

I'm not really sure there's a shortage on the name front, but it is a clever idea.

Yes, Codemasters, please do let me decide what name a child will carry with them for the rest of their life (or at least the first 18 years) so that I can enter into a *draw*. Yes, lotteries are totally worth such important decisions.

While I would never name my child solely on the basis of a draw (unless it was for something really good) it's not like it's some kind of weird, horrible name the kid will suffer for throughout his developmental years. Naming your boy Jason isn't like naming your boy Sue.

I've always liked the name Jason, so this sounds like a fair deal. Sounds a hell of a lot better than people naming their kids after OTHER video game characters, at any rate. I'd hate to meet the poor kid who got named Kratos.

So... so Sue is a bad name for a boy? In what way?

i can see someone stealing your babies identity from this...
How? All they want is your baby's name and a copy of the birth certificate... wait a minute!

Is that a Johnny Cash reference I spy there?

Google 'A Boy Named Sue'.

This is clearly just a stunt to gain publicity for the game and the company, not in the sense that they care about people being called Jason, just that they want media uproar. You are granting it undeserved publicity by discussing this issue.

please don't feed the troll (in this case, the troll being codemasters).

Kratos means Government, Power. I think that's already quite great. Plus, the games pronounce it wrong. The correct spelling sounds like Krah-tos- Keep in mind that in Greek the K sound isn't plosive, the R is pronounced by making your tongue vibrate against your palate once (the way Americans pronounce the "tt" in "gotta", and the T isn't plosive either. I think that this prononciation sounds far better.

Well I hope this campaign isn't too successful, I like the fact Jason isn't too common. :p I'm due to become a Dad in June and if it's a boy we're calling it Jason because my wife and I like the fact it means "healer". (Oh and Jason and the Argonauts is awesome!)

Regardless of what it means, it has no basis as a name in any english-speaking countries (outside of the game, anyhow), and thus i can only imagine how tormented such a kid might be. Same for anyone named Dante, or Vergil, or Zadkiel, or even Soloman; these just aren't good and common names to give kids. Really, thinking about it makes me glad i got a good, common name.
