With some fantasy games, i try to make something mystic and intersting, but they usually end up looking like i got drunk and started rubbing up against the keyboard.

Usually i just use Ramthundar, cause it
A) Has my name in it.
B) Has my initials in it.
C) Gives me an excuse to have a Ram avatar.
and
D) cause it helps people pronoune my effin name! don't see WHY it's so hard, it's not like it's phlem language!

My first WoW name: Arucar, from Arucard, originally Alucard, which is Dracula spelled backwards, all of which is from the Hellsing anime. Which is awesome.

Second name was Kiefziel, a custom name I thought when I made a ninja character in Soul Calibur 3. Which is also awesome.

Personally, I like names that are more RPG-like and yet could be (or have been) used in the real world. It's a bit of a stretch, but it's more reasonable than naming your kid Vynn Diesal or Iloveburgers.

:3 i name my characters whichever name i'm in the mood for. which nowadays is either yasuoyasha [peaceful demon], yashanosamui [demon of the cold], disciplined chaos [self explanatory], merciful torture [:3 i just LOVE f--king with people's heads], or Hae'Oden [which is me wanting to just be a complete dick].. OH... or Thor-Axe [the Carbagger... or was it Impaler]

Geezus, y'know I never realised Alucard was Dracula backwards. o_O; Wierd, it seems so obvious now.

Depends. Sometimes I name my character after some anime I wish they'd make a western style RPG out of. Like if I have a female Envoker, it witll be Lina Inverse. If I have a cleric or a ranger who can use guns, it's Sanzo. I really wish Saiyuki & Slayers & Dragon Half had Western RPGs....even Korean ones. I don't even care if it's 2D, pseudo3D or 3D with horrid polygons. & if my character can have green hair, white skin, & wear purple, it's the Joker (& not the crappy one from the new movie either).

I also like to just make up names or use a word or 2 from a foreign language. Using dead languages like Hawaiian & Latin feels more creative.

For awhile, I'll be using Alice McGee, in honor of the upcomming EA/Spicey Horse sequel to American McGee's Alice.

I started with variations of my own name (usually a random prefix added to the first part of my last name) until I hit one prefix I very much liked (Fal) from there it eventually changed to Fallen. One of the variations (FallenPrism) is now my default name online. Usually if it's offline I'll abbreviate it to Fallen or Fal on the first playthrough and then add suffixes on subsequent characters based on whatever theme or goal I have in mind for the new character, or just something random.

I somtimes try to get into it, like in my breif forray into World of Warcraft, I tried to give my dwarf a daft sounding name, His name was Muldun. I think it worked

But in general, I usually just half-heartedly think of a semi-sutiable fantasy name for a charater in a game, but it usually works in the end.

Easy. Every character (well, mostly) is called after my great self, Stompy. I may decide to use something else, but that's rare.

I haven't played an RPG in aages... Not even WoW, but I am thinking of naming a dwarven charecter in a generic fantasy setting "Carlos".
Anyone know what this is a shout out to?

Really depends on the character and game. Online I'm Wolf (pretty generic). In rpgs it varies greatly, for example I went through a Shakespearean phase a while back (Othello, Tybalt, etc).

If in doubt I find a random Seanchan (WoT books) general and use their name. Currently Kennar Miraj in Mount and Blade.

Another fun option is to name all the player characters after important NPCs, and then see if the story makes more sense.
That reminds me of my brother playing Knights of the old republic, he named his charecter RAMBO and thus leading to this line of dialouge.
Revan "I think RAMBO is an excellent name"
and what ever that hut says after. I forget.

I usually name my characters Flarvii or Balistora.

But I have to worship the guy who invented the "Generate Name" button.

I have 2 simple methods:

1: If it's a futuristic style game of any sort, you can't go wrong with a biblical first name and a 1 syllable last name. My favorite is Mordecai Toth. Which, crazily enough, I used for the first time playing "Star Wars:Galaxies" way back when. You could have knocked me over when I saw it as the name of one of the characters in "Dawn of War"

2: If its a fantasy\Medieval style game, I think of a common name for the present day and then change a few consonants around that can still achieve the same basic sound. Eran instead of Aaron, Eryka instead of Erica, just to give you an idea. As for a last name I usually try to stick with a concrete word like Shale or Card.

I find, in a truly freakish way, that I derive just as much joy from rolling new characters as I do from playing them.

I use different names, that I make up by typing random things on the keyboard and move the letters around a little.
Name Generators use way to typical names imo, and it's more satisfying to come up with names your self.

Online I use DrSpaceman. (Obviously)

In single-player I use Kevin DuBois. Why? A friend of mine and I named my KOTOR character this because of a Homestar Runner reference. (It's a bit bastardized, but what the hell.) For some reason, it's totally stuck. Been my single-player game name for nearly six years now as a result.

(And hell, if you take WoW as an example... People SERIOUSLY blow at picking names. I'm happy you can't use numbers, or it'd be pure madness)
It's so true, it almost hurts.

There are some really good ones, though you should be able to expect at least a fraction of the gigantic population of WoW to have some kind of wit or imagination. But then there are, naturally, the kids who play blood elves that name their character something along the lines of "Tittymcawesome"

Also, if you think WoW is bad, you should see Maplestory (which on a side note is the worst game EVER), where you CAN use numbers in your name. I don't think I saw a single somewhat serious name, save from my own, during the brief period I found myself playing that dreary suckfest of a game.
