This is a very hard one for me, as I use a lot so I'll go through them:

Online FPS: The Undoer
Casual Online (to friends): Issy

Dwarf Male: Elrok Ironrend

Elf Female: Isune/Ashunor (Windblossom)

Human Male: Elus

Human Female: Rideia Estelma

Dwarf Female: Grena Ironrend

I've never really touched futuristic games, but I'd probably just use Elus.

The truth of the matter is, I always go Dwarf Male, I love dwarves and when I played World of Warcraft I roleplayed a character named "Elrok Ironrend" and to this day, I still regret joining a raiding guild and leaving my Roleplaying buddies. Elrok is sort of, the embodiment of what I wish to be. Grena was his mother, she had a nice beard, nice and thick... *nostalgia*.

So if you ever see Elrok Ironrend, it's almost certainly me, and definately if he's trying to shake some poor bloke down for his coin.

The Undoer on the otherhand? Also always me. You have been, undone!

_____

All my characters are really named after my WoW characters, before that I could myself a rubbish name which I sharn't say for fear of letting people know. (It was sirfragsalot, joke). Even Izoon, my name here, is based on Isune (evolved from Elune/Azhune and then devolved backwards into Ashunor for when Isune was taken). The only recent name I've been by was on Morrowind as "Erildite" playing a Dark Elf male, which as you can see above I don't have a name for, upon realising how much that sounded like Arildite (A form of glue) I wanted to eat my own hand, and stopped playing male elves.

____

Final note: This post made me cry a bit about Elrok and Isune :(

I usually use Zaren as a male name and Xorena as a female name, but other than that I just make whatever name up off the top of my head.

I notice I tend to favor a's and r's for female names, though.

Male characters I'll usually nam Trivun, after my own real name. Female characters, I have a stock selection of names that are basicaly girls' names that I really like, that I regularly use in my short stories. These are generally:

- Niamh
- Violet
- Scarlett
- Abby
- Emma

Also, I really like names that are also flowers, especially regarding girls' names, so I may just choose a flowery name for my game character...

Males are always named Cody (my name) or Altheron, depending on the game.

Females are named Aneira, a name that I'm fond of.

I have a few names I used, depending on game genre, character type and gender.

I generally go with Janus for a male hero, Gaspar for a shadier-type, Lent (or sometimes Lezard) for mage-types and sometimes a name I made up a long time ago, Vilaft for large meat-head warrior types.

For females I generally use Maria for healers or mages and Mei for warrior-types.

And when my girlfriend is watching, sometimes I user her name :p

Kittens, then Kittens II, and so on. I'm currently on Kittens XIII
Which leads me to the question why you're a kitten in your games but a chicken in these forums. Huh...

@topic: The hardest part in any game for me is coming up with a name. I can defeat any boss, solve any riddle or make any jump. But coming up with a name is a real *****, so I usually go for curses or this name I have here.

In Zelda I'm going for fagballs. It's this homepage's fault.

I name it after me if I am going for a character who I want to be like me, Name it Tyler Durden if I make a character who I want to be like.
Whenever I play Harvest Moon games and I can only play a male, I name him Robert Paulson.

If the name comes up in text something witty to keep me entertained.
Otherwise I usually keep the standard one or something simple like Bob.
Picking names for WoW characters back in the day was impossible though.

im plaing dragon age at the moment and my character was called Doraleus (does that make me lame?) and i called the dog titty. Also on Oblivion i made my class 'transvestite' just so it would ask me 'are you sure you want to be a transvestite?'

also very aware that the 2 games i mentioned were really very geeky so you my point and laugh if you wish. i deserve it.

I have a regular practice when given the option to name my character in a game: Males will be named after Kurt Vonnegut (Mass Effect's TRUE hero: Commander Kurt Von Shepard).
Why not name him Kilgore T. Shephard instead?

Naming is simple for me.

I just pick a name from the real life nationality the character's in game nationality is based on.

For example, in Oblivion:

Imperial: Latin
Breton: French
Redguard: Arabic/African
Nord: Scandinavian/Danish

In Dragon Age:

Dwarven: Same as Nord
Human: Scottish
Elven: Who gives a crap? Elves are pussies in that game.

When I used to take games semi seriously, I would usually name them after some character in a movie or book, or make something up that sounded semi-Japanese- but not too much so that they sounded like a Final Fantasy character. But now I just name them all "Fart Sparkle".
