Sometimes after original characters in my head at the time. Otherwise I name them after myself so I feel more involved in the game.

Usually my current screen name. I like to stay consistent so that people can recognize the fact that this is my online persona, not just some random name I came up with.

Most of my characters are defined by the sound they make in combat or while dying. Link is usually Yaaahhh!, Master Chief was always Awhoooaaahh (think massive pile of grenades). Problem is that I usually have to play a game for a bit so I can hear what they sound like.

There tends to be a certain list of names I cycle through for character creations. I only have a couple for females, though. After I run through the fictional names I normally use, family members usually come next.

If its a woman,........... you know? i never actually played many games where i had to name women. except for FF VII but i kept them the same

Most of the time, I'll go for a random Scandinavian or similarly sounding name. Stuff like Marl, Ulf, Markus, Erik, etc. Sometimes, I'll switch over to the special characters sheet and try to fit as many as possible into a name.

In single player games, I usually just use the default name if there is one, and otherwise name them after myself.

In multiplayer games, my name is usually the dumbest thing I can think of.

If there's a random button, I'll click it until I get parts that look okay. Then I'll tend to tweak the names with different vowels, adding suffix syllables and altering phonetic spelling until I get something I like.

If there's no random button, then I press keys as randomly as I can for a second, then try to piece together a name out of the gibberish, and re-type it.

Unless I already have a cool name in mind.

Depends. Sometimes I name them Oppp7, sometimes I name them Lord of the Rings-esque names, sometimes I have a system for it.
Example 1: Oblivion characters. Named weird names that aren't random jumbles of letters but aren't real words/names.
Example 2: Guild Wars characters. My system for my first account was to name them after something to do with the Cambrian. On my second account I went with weird, Lord of the Rings-esque names.
But one thing that is consistant is that my first character on any of these must A. have a random name that is a jumble of letters and numbers (Sgdfhf Gh, Ijkdfk) B. Look completely random and stupid C. they must become my best and most used character.

They're almost always ridonkulous names, I believe my most current name was "Methlab" in Fallout 3. I also rolled a troll in WoW that I named HerpDaDerp.

So I was playing FF:CC for the GC and wanted to make a female character and was going to name her after the girl I had a crush on (her last name), so I typed it in, Tamarkin

Somehow it ended up spelled Tarkin, and I liked the name so I use it

My CheckD3 name comes from when in 8th grade I wanted to be a rapper, my last name is Bobincheck and my first Ed, so I was going to be Double D, but my friend suggested CheckD, since it's my last and first name, so it stuck. Somehow that's used on AIM when I had went to sign up, so I added the 3 since it looks like E and sounds like D, and that's my other name for when I feel like resting Tarkin

An interesting thread, I'd have to say. Look at my Escapist username here on the post if you want to know the one I use most often (I play fantasy a heck of a lot more than I play anything modern/future), but in other cases I invent on the spot. I'm usually a fair hand at it and get something respectable after the second or third try. To pull one from the hat, I might start up a game of Titan Quest now with... oh... Thalak, Sorin, or Falashir. Male by default, but end on a vowel (by removing letters or adding a handy "a") and you fix that problem, thus the vowel-consonant endings on all of those...
