One time, when I was bored, I started up a new game of FFVII, and thought I'd screw around:
Cloud: Bad Ass
Barrett: Whoop Ass
Tifa: Kick Ass
Aerith: Sweet Ass
Cait Sith: Fat Ass
Cid: Hard Ass
I don't remember what I named Red XIII, and I never had Vincent or Yuffie join up, so I never thought up any names for them.
More recently, on FFVIII, I gave Squall my name because I almost look like him, and though I'll deny it endlessly, I'm probably just as big a loser as he. I gave Rinoa the name Sarah because that's my favorite name for a woman (what can I say, I loved Labyrinth as a kid... and Jennifer Connelly), though I'd rather have given that name to Quistis.
... yeah, I'm a sad and lonely man.

For other games, it really just depends on my mood, though somehow I've never felt right re-naming Link in any of the Zelda games. I'm not even a huge Zelda fan, but I have this huge hang-up about it that I can't explain.

I'm probably one of the nihilistic ones. Although I do name some characters based on my mood. When I feel like pissing about I use "Gary" just because I've always wanted a pet with that name. Don't judge me :p

Other times it's based on something I'm currently into, reading or have recently viewed on the Idiot Box.

Guys usually get named something mundane like "Jim" or "Chuck" because I enjoy hearing the epic tale of some schmuck named Jim.

Girls I generally name "Delilah" because I just happen to like the name, even if it does sort of imply that she's a treacherous shrew.

Depends on the setting, I went through a Shakespeare phase a few years ago (Iago, Othello, Tybalt etc), but generally it's random. I just go with a name that fits, in Dragon Age I called my character Nathan as I based him physically off the marvel character Cable. My Malkavian in VTMB I called "the March Hare" after Alice in wonderland.

I name my characters in an entirely arbitrary fashion which is why my import save for ME3 will be Riot Shepard (since she is my favourite Shepard) In Sims games I tend to use stupid names like the ones of NPCs. Either way, it is based on how I feel at the time, I never use my own name though.

If it's a male then my own name(Theodor) or a variation of it(in DA:O for example: Therod)
If it's a female anything that sounds sexy at that time(for me the simple names are the best): Cloe, Gwen, Anna, etc. But sometimes I just go for a common American name: John/Jack/Max.

I'll usually just name it after myself or a variant of my name, or, if I'm pissed off about something, I'll call it something like C. Mongler or something similarly offensive.

I try to find my characters main characteristic or something else that is important in the game/for the character. I try to find one word for that, then I translate it into Latin and make a name out of it.
Like Umbrao (not very proud of this one), my gnome warlock. Umbra means shadow, as in "Between good and evil, there is shadow."

depends, i go with my PSN (see user name) my old arcade name (Rage), but only in fighting games wher eyou make your own character.

In RPGs i go with whatever fits, but my favs are Malaketh (was gutted that there is a similar name in the Warhammer and elderscrolls franchises), Snorri and Thornir (I got these from a viking name genorator for some oblivion saves when all I could think of for a name was Titty).

I also use my real name some times, I mean what name is more amazing than Joe

If it's a male, I'll go with something Russian. Like Sergei, Boris, Vladimir and so on. If it's a female, I'll go with whatever comes to mind.

I actually have real trouble with this. If a character sort of has a name already, I keep it. My character in Zelda is always Link, My character in Borderlands is always their original name. If I have to come up with one, I try to find a random name generator on the net. Best one I've gotten from those is "Utijirosu" for EVE Online (plus that character looked japanese, so it worked nicely)

Sir Digby Chicken Caesar, Jacosta Divillnerve or a variation there upon

I always call my rival on Pokemon games Titface. After 8 games through 12 years, you'd think it gets old. But it doesn't :)

Something Biblical usually... why not?

Right now Moses wanders the Capital Wasteland and Jesus is jumping from Mass Relay to Mass Relay.
