So what does NBC have left? Parks and Rec? I frigging love that show but it's declined a bit recently and even at it's best it's not a lot of good comedy output. NBC have totally Britta-ed it (never had to type that, looks bloody weird). This definitely is the Darkest Timeline
Hate be the bearer of bad news, but Parks and Rec looks pretty.... finished. On the plus side, the last episode is pretty epic.

On topic: I used to love Community. I really really did. I thought it was the greatest thing ever. But then season 4 rolled around, and suddenly, I started to dread watching it. I later found out that the original showrunner hadn't been around for season 4, and that made perfect sense. And I can go back and watch season 1-3 any day of the week, it's still awesome stuff. But I couldn't even be bothered to watch season 5, even though the showrunner returned. Mostly because two of the main cast had left... So... this news doesn't really.... phaze me. I think that's the right word. I fondly remember 3 seasons of Community, and I'll just pretend the rest didn't happen, like the petty child I am. :D

This makes me so Changry. Seriously, one of the best shows to have ever been and pretty much nobody got it. Good job NBC, thanks for Britta-ing this.

Am I the only one who loved Community but is glad that it's finally been put out of its misery? So, I guess you could say that I don't give a fuck.

Abed and Shirly were really starting to grate on my nerves. It's a shame we didn't get to see more of not-Mike, though.

Also, I wonder how much of this cult following actually supported the show instead of just pirating it.

It's all my fault, seriously it is.

I didn't know what a really good show it was, and even though The Comedy Network was actually airing repeats, I just never found a hole in my schedule to watch it. Well I could of made the time if I tried hard enough, but... I never knew.....
In fact if I hadn't finished House of Cards/Lies on Netflix and just started (as in still on season one) on a WTH whim I'd still be missing out. It's very smart and definitely skewed comedy that's right up my alley. Who knew?
Maybe Netflix will take the initiative to continue it.

Is it somehow comforting to acknowledge that in our reality the majority is comprised of stupid? That this smartly written show statistically never stood a chance? And that the opposite is continuously proven to be true, as well?

Is it any fucking comfort at all?

But the Big Bang Theory is not cancelled, thus proving that mainstream audiences suck and the opinion of the masses doesn't mean diddly squat.
To be fair, the "masses" are the Big Bang Theory crowd. Community is more of the "loud minority" of fans.

Community had pretty middling ratings throughout its run and Season 4's poor quality did some damage to its rep.

Twas funny as hell for a cable tv though.

Maybe if NBC had given this show a decent timeslot (i.e. not opposite the most popular sitcom on the air), it would have stood a chance ratings-wise. Fucking bunch of idiots.

A least they kept Hannibal around for another season.

(Pssst. It's made by Dan Harmon. You should watch it.)
Are the characters supposed to be Back to the Future knock offs?

Yes. That's the joke.

OT:
While I am very sad, the fact that it forces Harmon to put 100% of his time into Rick and Morty is certainly a silver lining.

Rick and Morty is brilliant and it's still fresh while Community had steadily gone downhill.

I'll also be interested to see what the other actors do.

I for one want to see Joel McHale host every video game event ever.

Really they cancelled it after Season 3 when the network caved to Chevy Chase and got rid of showrunner Dan Harmon. Season 4 knocked a lot of regular viewers off the show and Season 5 wasn't really powerful enough to get those eyeballs back.
Although I love the show season 5 was little better than 4. Still 1 more season and a movie would have been perfect

It deceptively looks like a BttF spoof, but it's actually a psychopathic Dr Who.

And it's great.

like many have said before at least Abed gave us the canon ending

It is unfortunate that a show like the Big Bang Theory can thrive but something like Community was only ever able to just barely limp along.

this is indeed the darkest timeline

I've only seen the first two seasons due to it not being released further then that on DVD here for some reason, but it's a bummer to hear. It's a good show.

I loved the first season! The second was pretty good. The third was alright. The fourth started getting a bit stale. The fifth... meh.

Ratings have never been what's taken a show off air, lack of advertiser and sponsor interest however, has.

Lest we forget Reaper, that despite SLAUGHTERING 90210 in the ratings, got cancelled in favour of 90210 because advertisers didn't like the concept of a prime time sitcom about the devil's bounty hunter.

I'd wager a lot of it is the same with Community, just imagine pitching the show at first to advertisers: "Off beat comedy about a bunch of misfits in a community college having all kinds of mis-adventures, features all the nerd jokes of BBT but is more accessible as it's about everyday folk."

Then think of how it'd pitch now: "Community is a comedy show about a misfit bunch of employees and students at a community college, featuring meta-narrative, in-jokes about DnD and Dr. Who, a recurring theme of alternate dimensions and timelines and a brilliant pastiche on Orwellian social networking."

To whit that advertiser will respond: "Who's this for? I don't get it... and are they mocking social networks? We can't have that, it'd be like telling people who involve their lives around social media they are wrong, instantly alienating 60% of our demographic."

That I promise you is EXACTLY how it went down.

Why is BBT always mentioned, and in a negative way? I love them both ^^
Popularity polynomial. The more popular something is, the more derisive the people outside of the target audience are towards the target audience.

I'm not a big fan of The Big Bang Theory. I've seen a few episodes, and while there were occasional jokes I laughed at, and I think Jim Parsons does a fantastic job playing Sheldon, the jokes are too hit and miss for me, and the show's always felt like it's laughing at nerds rather than with them. That said, I disagree with people who are fans of the show, but I wouldn't insult them or think less of them for enjoying it. Tolerance is supposed to be for more than just people you agree with, after all.

I haven't seen Community. I had heard the title of the show, but I still don't know what Community is about. I'm wondering if that might be the issue. People don't watch shows based on titles, and NBC clearly didn't work hard enough getting the concept out there.

Also, to the people who say that this is a sign of how stupid the general public is...be glad you got five seasons. Fans of Firefly didn't even get one. Fans of Jake 2.0 didn't even get one. Fans of Almost Human got one. Compared to many cult shows, five seasons is a rather surprising run. Don't look at this as NBC screwing the show. It's more like the shows been on life support, NBC's been paying the medical bills, but they now see that Community will never recover, so they're turning off the life support.

I can't say I'm too surprised; Season 3 was a little uneven, Season 4 was just plain terrible, and Season 5 was a lot better but still not really up to scratch. I don't feel like the show had much left in it.

That said, as people have pointed out, unambiguously, consistently terrible shows like Big Bang Theory are still going while a flawed but generally okay show like this gets cancelled, so that sucks.
