NBC Thinks Fairy Tale Police Drama Could Be Just Right

Another new pickup by NBC head Bob Greenblatt could feature a police force that has to deal with the Big Bad Wolf.

In addition to a Wonder Woman television pilot [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107189-Wonder-Woman-Lassos-New-TV-Show-After-All], new NBC entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt has ordered an episode of an interesting show called Grimm. True to its name, Grimm features the characters from fairy tales such as those written by the Brothers Grimm, but in a modern setting.

Grimm is billed as a "dark but fantastical" police drama that takes place in a world where the characters from fairy tales are real. It's coming from Buffy the Vampire Slayer [http://www.amazon.com/Angel-Season-One-Slim-Set/dp/B000I0QLQY/ref=sr_1_4?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1296319096&sr=1-4] executive producer David Greenwalt and writer Jim Kouf.

The basic concept for Grimm sounds remarkably similar to Bill Willingham's Fables [http://www.amazon.com/Fables-Vol-1-Legends-Exile/dp/1563899426/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296319185&sr=8-1], a comic book that stars fairy tale characters living in New York City. Like Grimm, Fables has a dark overtone. Fables was said to be picked up for a television transition by ABC in late 2008, but has gone somewhat AWOL since.

If Fables reemerges and Grimm gets picked up, it would be odd to see two fairy tale-themed dramas on television at once, but this could be good for viewers if both have their own spin. With Wonder Woman, Grimm, and other shows Greenblatt has expressed interest in such as Ron Moore's "adult Harry Potter" 17th Precinct, I'm thinking we're going to see at least something compelling from NBC in the near future.

You're right, this does sound an awful lot like Fables. I kinda wonder how straight they're going to play this, are regular people going to know they exist?

This, to me, sounds like a mix of Fables and True Blood.

Still sounds pretty awesome, though.

I see a copyright lawsuit on the horizon... this seems way too similar to Fables for there not to be one.

This sounds absolutely dreadful. It goes beyond the "so unrealistic it just might work" and just strays into ludicrous territory.

I'm gonna quote Monty Python on this one.

"I'd like to see more fairy stories about the police."

I pesonally want to see a CSI style program set in a world where supernatural beings live. I could just see them doing lab work on a stake to find out who killed the local vampire!

Alright, if they wanna do a supernatural dark police story, why not just make a Dresden Files show and get it over with, it's the superior property to transfer over.

OH WAIT!

Fuck you Sci-Fi channel and your inability to handle good properties.

Hmmm, well it could be interesting but it doesn't reach out and grab me right off the bat. It seems like someone decided to come up with the idea of combining "The 10th Kingdom" with "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", both of which were very entertaining, but I'd rather see proper sequels developed to, rather than some kind of hodge-podge new property.

I'm a bit more accepting of the "Fables" thing given that it's an established property, but "Grimm" seems like it's intended to be a reaction to it. The problem with "Fables"
though is that it's a Vertigo title, and I can't see them doing it right as prime time TV.

Say no more! I'm sold!

I think this'll be a good show, if they pull it off correctly. I mean, Supernatural [http://www.tv.com/supernatural/show/30144/summary.html?tag=page_nav;main] did two episodes where Fairy Tales [http://www.tv.com/supernatural/i-believe-the-children-are-our-future/episode/1299787/summary.html?tag=ep_guide;summary] came to life [http://www.tv.com/supernatural/bedtime-stories/episode/1138359/summary.html?tag=ep_guide;summary], and they did a great job of mixing the absurd, the funny, and the serious quite well.

THE Grimms Fairy tales?

Where Cinderella's Sisters dismember themselves and get their eyes pecked out by birds?

Or Snow White is raped awake?

REALLY don't think that'll work.

Yeah I didn't even read the article before going wait isn't this just Fables, but not as good because it's a knockoff. I mean in fables the gritty cop is the big bad wolf. I swear to god I would lose my shit if AMC picked up and did a Fables tv series.

Sounds like somebody wrote a treatment for Fables, an executive axed it for being 'too magical', and they handed it off to an SVU writer to 'edgy' things up.

Fables is an awesome comic. To be honest, I would really like that to become a TV series. The first couple Volumes at least. Also, I'd like it to be picked up by AMC.
