I'd go Necron if I were you - better fluff, and an awful lot cheaper (and in my humble opinion way better looks compared to them ugly bug thingies)
And don't mind the people telling you how this race is strong or that races codex would be outdated - in my 40k group, there's successful Inquisition and Dark Eldar players, in the end it's all up to your strategy, and both nids and necs are forgiving to play, since nids are many, and necs tend to stand back up.

As a Space Marine player i find Necrons the harder team to face, they just don't die!!

Depends what you want: souless legion of the dammned that will keep coming back and back and back and back OR mutated packs of deadly alien creatures hellbent on ripping apart anything in its way.

I wish I had the money and patience to complete my warhammer army, started it some time in the late 90s and stopped collecting some time last console generation. They still sit on my shelf, half of them unpainted and me having wasted something like 4 or 500 dollars on them lol.

I say go with Necrons, much easier to paint and collect. Nids are like for the hardcore of hardcore warhammer players, they come in so many variations and are a real pain to paint.

Necrons are just too uniform and uniteresting to play. What you want are giant space insectoid hive mind things whose first thought upon seeing the universe is "OM NOM NOM NOM".

I prefer Necrons, Whenever I've played against a Nid player with either my Necrons or S'Marines I've just shot 10 kinds of crap out of them and suffered very little for it. 9 times out of 10 I'll win. Though I must admit never get in a fist fight with a bunch of Nids, they make mince meat out of most things when they get the chance. Think about the style of play you want to go for, do you want to tear across the board and rip chunks of flesh from the enemy as an unstoppable hoard of sharp arms and teeth? go Nids or do you want your army to be a leviathan marching forward causing annoyance as any casualties you take stand back up and keep on coming? Go necrons.

Nids. Necrons always seemed boring for me, little variety in models, very few basic troops. Plus they are just not fun to look at. With Nids you can go wild on color schemes, different mutations and plenty of options to build around. Plus you dont have to worry about loosing a few during a match, with Necrons, every loss on your side can be painful.

Okay, with Necrons you'll usually win, but if you're playing someone who's used to playing them you will probably get tabled. Cron's arn't the very customizable (only one unit has any options for gear). The nid's have much more customization but require skill to play. Just go with an army that seems to call to you.

I play Chaos. I've never played with 'nids but I can imagine it's going to take a lot of mans, and the rules might be a bit messed up. Then again, I am just going by what the fluff describes.

The only thing going for Necrons is that they can be drybrushed quickly to crank out an army. Although both armies lack a lot of variety in their character Tyranids win for the superior and (mostly) newer models.

Hmmm. Personally I prefer the Necrons, although right now they're a bit of a crap shoot. They're getting a new codex by the end of 2011, which'll bring 'em up to date, but the new model range will be more expensive.

Tyranids are undoubtedly expensive, but there are so many builds that you can do, you'll never get bored.

BTW, the Tryanids try, the Tyranids do ;)
