I'm a horror fan, I watched The Ring 4 times in a week, and despite the hilariously excessive gore, scrounged most of the Nightmare on Elm street and Friday the 13th movies.

Of course this means I play horror games, Dead Space, Silent hill homecoming (can't find the others sadly), Penumbra 1 and 2, Amnesia the dark descent, F.E.A.R., and most of the horror titles available for the xbox360. Problem: only 2 of these has legitmately made me afraid to play it and paranoid for the next hour, which was Amnesia and Penumbra 2. Even those I stopped being scared of quickly. Now I ask you, random person I don't know, are there any horror games that have simply left you afraid of the dark? (points for the system they are found on)

I feel i should add that i still enjoyed these games, i just wasn't scared by them.

Condemned has some pretty scary moments, as well as many pipe bludgeoning matches against hobos. I played it on the PC but I believe it's also on the xbox 360.

I cant remember the name, but its a game where you run around areas (what I saw looked like a hospital ward) avoiding this weird woman and child (my mate showed me it on Youtube during college), apparently if she catches you, you die. Her hair randomly appears in places also along with the odd cat.

EDIT: The Grudge on the Wii (dont ask how the hell I just remembered that)

I played 2. That appealed greatly to my morbidity, but wasn't really scary. But the last 3 or so hours were ridiculous. Were you referring to Condemned 1?

Um... think thats the Grudge. Saw the movie, I'll check for a game.

Something like Resident Evil 4 (PS2), and Indigo prophecy/Fahrenheit (PS2), and the Condemned series (Xbox360) might fit the bill, and while perhaps not exactly horror Limbo (Xbox360) or the Manhunt games (PS2/PC) might be worth a look as well for their thematics.

If you're feeling adventurous, there's of course also something like Chaos;Head [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_Head] or Animamundi: Dark Alchemist [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animamundi:_Dark_Alchemist], Japanese horror visual novels for PC.

Yeah, I'm referring to 1. I've heard from a few people (as well as this site's very own Yahtzee) that 2 goes mental near the end. I've never really felt compelled to play it. To be fair though 1 gets a bit daft near the end too.

There aren't really that many games that do horror well to be honest. I found doom 3 to be scary for about 10 minutes - before it becomes a mass monster shoot-athon. Other than that I suggest you keep up your search for the older silent hills - especially 2. It's still not massively scary but it has a decent atmosphere and it's a good story well told.

Metro 2033. My friend is playing it at the moment, and reports that it's pretty damn scary. Kind of like S.T.A.L.K.E.R meets F.E.A.R meets Fallout meets Doom3, apparently.

Really? Metro 2033 is scary? Hm. I suppose in some parts...

That game is really all about the atmosphere. I loved every little bit of it. I should go play it again actually.

OT: There really aren't many legitimately scary games. I've grown out of being scared by video games for the most part now, so I can't really give you any that you haven't already played except for Condemned 1.

I've just started the Silent Hill franchise, I'm playing 1-4 and might move onto homecoming afterwards, I have to say...

Playing games like them, Call of Cthulhu, Dead Space, ANYTHING by Frictional... it really solidifies how much I love The Horror genre in videogames. its such a PERFECT fit and I'm really looking forward to seeing it develop over the coming years.

Hell I even got a kick out of the Saw game.

I think it was the tension for him- the atmosphere, scrabbling around in the dark with a little flashlight, etc. Haven't played it myself, though I may have to borrow it of him when he's done with it...

I gotta be honest and say that Bioshock; whilst not chock full of shit-your-pants-scared moments, was certainly an experience. The atmosphere is tense; the splicers are disturbing and on Survivor I was aware that I had to conserve ammo and spend my money and ADAM wisely. Whilst not a scary game, it provided a scary atmosphere.

Considering the extremely twisted other elements Saya no Uta also contain, I'd be loathe to recommend it when chickening out of playing it myself after reading up on it. By all accounts it's an excellent horror VN, but the other stuff to it might well be far more than the OP bargained for.

So I'll just pass on the recommendations for the VN's which exclusively deal with horror elements.

I remembered this horror i played when I was young for the PS2. I believe it was called Extermination, and It was fucking scary. Takes place in a military base in Antartica. One of the ads for it was especially creepy. You see a satilite photo of the base and it is totally fucked up. A couple buildings are smoldering, a few bodys lay dead, and in the snow is written "HEL-" The P cut off because the person writing it was dead a few feet away. I remember playing it a bit and it was generally scary. But then again I was 11 at the time. And I found a lot scary then.

I could see that then. Also, borrow it for sure. I recommend that game to as many people as possible. I haven't really played something quite as immersive as that game in a long time.

I played the original clocktower on an emulator, the main baddie is the only one who prevented me from sleeping. There is also a pretty good scary part in the beginning of Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and a damn good game overall. Steam, $20. Everyone get it now

Wait, what? I don't know what a VN or Saya no Uta is. By the way, I am a morbid person, twisted and disturbing parts of anything have never troubled me, my next planned vacation is hopefully to a catacomb :D (jk, i don't think im allowed in catacombs.)
