I've tried doing that. Does nothing.
Then its most likely impossible, sorry. BTW what sort of error message do you get.
If you're talking about the status codes on the 360, they're:

W: 0000 - 000B
X: 0400 - F001
Y: 0000 - 0000
Z: 0000 - 0000
ID: FFFF - FFFF

Sorry wrote a little wrong. I meant when you test your connection, at what point does it fail (like failing when obtaining ip adress etc). But I guess it doesnt matter that much.

It fails in between the network icon and the internet icon. Though yeah, it probably doesn't matter. Thanks for the help anyway :)

Connecting to the internet on your laptop is different because your being prompted to log in to the University's internet connection - it tells them you want access and you are a registered student.

Your Xbox won't give you the option to access their internet because it looks for connection information, not your University's student authentification.

my school does this the beginning of every year. They block in coming connections to computers if they don't have a virus protection software, and seeing as your XBox isn't a PC it won't be seen as one on the network either and will be blocked. Talk to your schools IT department, they may have something you can register your Xbox with (We call it Gamernet) so that they can open up the network for your XBox'x unique MAC address
Is there a way to use a MAC address without registering first? It's just that I've already asked the IT department, and they're useless.
You catch more flies with honey... There's useless over here as well (And they don't seem to understand my complaint about having more bandwidth on their wireless connection versus the wired one in my place...which annoys the piss out of me, and prevents me from watching videos here), but if you let them know you think that they won't be motivated to help. As for your question, well i think it's already been answered sorta. The school will register your box using the Mac address, allowing it access, until then it will treat it as a machine that isn't authorized and will just keep you out... Ask them about it specifically like "Hey i'm trying to hook my XBox up to the internet here, is there a way you guys could help me out i can't get connected." Play dumb, college IT workers are usually students themselves and haven't learned to hate helping idiots yet...Not saying you're an idiot, but lets just pretend

Already asked them about it, and they said they'll get back to me in 2 weeks. That was 2 months ago. I've kinda put it down to a lost cause now anyway. My IT department is full of lazy students.

That's what my old university did, and all you had to do was contact the IT department and they would open your connection. Back then, we only had PS2's and regular XBOX's though. Thankfully, I live off-campus for my return to college, so I don't have to deal with any of those issues.

Hmm... you could try the exact opposite approach and badger them till they get off their asses... As I speak the cable in my bedroom has been busted since september, and they still haven't fixed it, gave me the same two week line. They give it again mention they said the same thing two months ago...i mean if you're paying for XBL that you can't use i'd be pissed if i were you...

working in support for many years, i'm going to have to say that most of the "useless" ppl are the end users. they don't know how to word questions correctly or have too high of an expectation with little or no information, to use an analogy they drive into a mechanic's and say "my car is making a noise when i drive, fix it" and then promptly walk out and when they return they say "why haven't you fixed it you are useless"

granted some don't know the questions to ask all the time but most of the time it's ppl who call in that don't know what to ask.

as for the support taking their sweet ass time fixing your issue, well the xbox is for recreation and put VERY low on the priority list. a sysadmin is giving a choice between fixing a bunch of students and professor's computers and connection or fixing your lack of 360 connectivity, sorry to say you lose out

if i were you i'd be very specific with your request and what you are trying to do. i also think that the 360 has some firewall settings where you can put in a username and password, if not try getting a router to do it
