I played Morrowind and although it was fun I say that you should buy Oblivion just because it was not really fucking lame having every fifth sword swing register as a hit.

I found oblivion easier to play. But I played it first. Considering that you are going from Fallout 3 to one or the other.. I would strongly suggest Oblivion. Morrowind, though great in its time, is still an old looking/ old playing game.

Some people may disagree but let me ask you: would you rather play Goldeneye 64 or COD 4?

I say get Oblivion first, because it's smoother and easier to play, and it you're used to Fallout 3, Morrowind's gameplay is gonna kick you in the ass.

But I agree that Morrowind is the better game. The graphics aren't as good. But if you get some better textures, then replace the player models, things get a lot better real fast. Plus Morrowind was just more... cohesive art wise (maybe I'm the only one who thought Oblivion looked like cut + paste vegetation).

Really though, what I loved about Morrowind was that I was just dropped onto the island, and I was on my own. Sure I could save the world, but I could also become a thief, and work my way up to retarded amounts of riches. I could get lost in game politics, doing shady dealings for the great houses. I could go pick flowers and run from the rampaging (and fairly original looking) wild life. Morrowind was it's own little world. I never bothered with the main quest until my third or fourth character, 'cause I didn't WANT to.

Oblivion, not so much. Sure, the combat was much better. But the dialogue was stiff. I was back to only getting one or two responses from an NPC (this is what I HATE about most RPGs). And on top of that, I start the game jumping into some sort of cliche plot, and I'm the good hero. I don't get to discover that for myself, and I sure as hell can't ignore it.

Morrowind really struck my as something true to RPG roots, in the pen and paper variety. Oblivion struck me as... and action game with leveling up. I like 'em both, but to me, Morrowind was just better.

PS. I actually thought Fallout 3 hit the immersion factor way better than Oblivion. So if what you liked about it was the characters, depth, sidequests, blah blah blah then you're in for a real treat with Morrowind.

Oblivion

Morrowind is outdated, and you'll probably never enjoy it after having played Fallout 3
This.

I even played Morrowind before Oblivion, I just didn't like it, seemed really slow constantly, Oblivion changes pace more, I'm not saying it's fast all the time, but I think it's more engaging.

Well, I'll definately be getting for the 360, since my computer is dead. Is Morrowind unplayable on a console?
Not unless you have an original Xbox.
Why do you lie? GotY edition works fine on 360, I'm just torn away from my beautiful god character on the original.

A lot of people here are complaining about Morrowind, and I can pretty much guarantee that none of them ever got do a decent level, because the game starts out HARD. The first time I played it, I was clueless for about half an hour, then set it down and played something else. But, just follow the main quest to Balmora (takes less than a minute) and start wandering around, join a faction, explore tombs, realize the glories of soul trap and the money it can get you. You will never have to touch the main quest to enjoy this game, I had it for years before I bothered, but I love every aspect of the game.

Oblivion though, has much better game mechanics (i.e. you damage something when your sword touches it, but you DO get better in Morrowind), much better graphics, and has quick-travel(which both made and ruined the game for me). The story of Morrowind is both better written, and gives you more of a sense of accomplishment.

Play both, they're great games. Oblivion if you want something like Fallout 3, and Morrowind if you want what the Elder Scrolls is all about.

Just to reiterate, my only option is to play it on the 360.

Anyway, since Fallout 3 seems to be the measuring stick for the two games, what do they each have in common with it, and what is different from it in both?

For how long did you play it?

I say go for Morrowind.

Oblivion has better graphics and combat.
Morrowind is better in every other way.
The only thing to note in Oblivion really was the Dark Brotherhood quests, which some of the early ones are a *****(FUCK THAT JAIL MISSION) the rest of them are awesome, and the story for it was actually good.

Hmmm...

If you're looking for console, then Oblivion 100% of the way.

On PC, they both have their pro's and cons

Oblivion:
+: Good graphics, good combat, good 'worldspace' (by which I mean that even though it's a bit smaller, seems to be more detailed,) much larger modding community.
-: Dodgy story, annoying early missions, dodgy side quest missions, expensive (in RL,) no sense of good or evil.

Morrowind:
+: Deeper story, more spells (levitation!!!,) many more guilds and quests, cheaper.
-: Fast travel only to major locations, VERY confusing in the beggining, steep learning curve terrible combat system, confusingly non-linear, no compass, poorly done journal system, horrible graphics and animations (even for it's day.)

In short, Oblivion is for very this-gen players who are looking for an RPG with a nice simple combat system. Morrowind is much better suited for someone who is prepared to put time and effort into learning how every spell works, what can be found in each region, how to get around quickly, etc. It's also a much less linear in terms of plost (perhaps too non-linear) - all you have to do to beat the game is destroy some artefact, and most of the guilds don't require you to follow any set course, often leaving you standing there wondering what to do next.

Well I am a tabletop RPer IRL, so non-linearity and many spell-combinations don't really worry me. I'm worried more about:

- Immersion/Storytelling.
- Compatibility with the Xbox 360.
- Character customisation.
- Replay value.

In that case, then you should be more than happy with Morrowind.

- There are about twenty different skills, different races (with different attributes) (though the game lacks perks.)
- While I personally find that Morrowind lacks some replay value, there are many out there who would say otherwise. It really depends on the types of characters you like to play.
- The roleplaying and storytelling are about twenty times more than Oblivion.
- As far as I'm aware, at least one version of the game is backwards compatible (though unless your PC is the very bottom of the bottom end, I'd at least look twice before deciding on 360.)
