so guys this is the story,

its coming upto my second year of uni and since my laptops so close to dying i decided it would be best to get a new computer since my course relies heavily on using 3d programs, because of this i have decided to build my own computer as i know you can get far more bang for your cash. my budgets about £663 i could go higher if i think it will be worth it the desktop has to be able to run the likes of maya, the unreal engine etc.

this is what i have come up with

processor - ADM phenomII x6 black edition 1090T 3.2ghz 9mb cache

motherboard - Asus M4A785TD-V EVO

GPU - HIS HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI Display Port Out PCI-E Graphics Card

RAM - OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C10 (2000MHz) Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3G2000LV4GK) [OCZ3G2000LV4GK]

HDD - 500GB

optical drive - DVD drive

PSU - 700w

main quieries i have is,

AMD and intel what are the pros and cons of each as i could get an i5 or i7 for the same price

AMD is it really worth going for the black edition or should i go for the cheaper ordinary 1055T one?

is the motherboard i mentioned any good?

most importantly will this setup happily do what i want it too?

and anything else important im missing out?

and just your general opinion will be great any hints and tips etc etc

just this will be my first and ill be spending alot of my own hard earned cash and dont want to ruin it all.

As long as you checked the inter-compatibility of all the components it should be fine, i wish i had it...

Its at least double and sometimes triple what i have at the moment and i'm playing fallout on medium settings smoothly.

/envy.

Answers to your questions, in order:

Dunno.

I wouldn't go for the black one personally.

Probably.

Yes.

No.

If I send you a Paypal account you should give me money because you obviously have more than you need if you are considering a rig like this just to run Unreal engine.

HAH!

=]

For the purpose of avoiding a low content post probation... Again, I'll say this.

Pick the red one. (I'd say something more constructive, but my expertise is limited in compared to everyone else who's older than 8 on this forum)

Firstly, you don't need a hexa-core processor for gaming. You may want to save money by getting a quad-core, either an entry-level Core i5 on the LGA 1156 socket, or a Black Edition Phenom II X4 on the AM3 socket. When it comes to Black Edition processors, the whole point of them is to be able to overclock them properly - it unlocks the multiplier, giving you more flexibility in overclocking terms. To make it worth it, you're really going to want to overclock.

Asus are well-known for their motherboards, and have a good all-round reputation. Your motherboard should do the job well, and there are no problems there.

To be honest, you're probably going to want to spend some of the money you saved on the processor on a slightly more powerful GPU. A 5830, or even better, a 5850, would be recommended over the mid-level 5770, which does the job, but isn't as future-proof as you might like.

Other things to take account of: Do you have an appropriate case? You'll need something which is good at heat transfer. Also, is your PSU a reputable brand, like Corsair, OCZ, Seasonic, et cetera? The PSU is one component that it's never worth going cheap on.
thanks man very helpful :) i prob will end up overclocking think that saves me about £90 for GPU or power supply

the power supplies an Artic power if that means anything to you?

the case should be fine as it comes with 3 good fans and space for 2 or 3 more?

but thanks alot anyways :)

Well, I don't really know that much about the hardware, but I'm sure NCEA Level 2 IT (maybe even 1) will cover that enough so that I'll know what I'm talking about... also, I'll be getting a laptop on my 16th birthday (my grandmother does that for all her grandchildren), it'll be really interesting to see how that plays out. She might let me choose which one, she might choose for me, I might even just get given money, which would, therefore, give me the opportunity of making my own.

Wish I could help you, but, oh well.

Not much, to be honest, which probably means that it's a bit dubious in quality. What you're looking for is a power supply with a verified 80+% efficiency, which means that it converts 80% of the power intake (the advertised value) into power that the computer can use. Corsair is the brand that I use here, but anything with 80+% efficiency should work fine.

Sounds good. These machines run hot, so it's important to have a good case. Yours sounds fine.
ah ok, i found one for £85 by OCZ its got that 80+% was going to spend the cash the cash for a better graphics card but i would rather have a mid range graphics card and a good PSU than a shit PSU and a good graphics card..

got £30 spare so just goin to keep that for nights out and shizz thanks a bunch man you saved me alot of time and money :) if i knew where you lived i would purchase you a pint!

sounds cool anyways man although i dont like laptops as they are more expensive to repair although you cant complain if you are having it bought for you... looking forward to building my own pc though. i like building shizz haha
