And the more cynical people (me among them) say romance is dead. Honestly that is a very good story.Thaius said:Well I met my girlfriend on a chat room for Avatar: The Last Airbender (yes, one of the nerdier love stories ever), and she lives 4 hours away from me. Long-distance relationships are hard, but we've been going strong for about a year and a half now.
There was one time that I realized that I had kind of been neglecting her. I felt horrible about it and dedicated myself to paying more attention to her. The first step in that plan? Plot with her mother (her family likes me, so I can do stuff like that) to have two dozen roses bought and scattered around my girlfriend's room while she was at work. I also mailed a handwritten apology/love letter to her mother, who put it on her desk for her to read when she got back. Since then I've had her mom put one of her favorite candies in her room every time she's at work.
A bit on the nerdier side, for Valentine's Day last year I was learning to code visual novels (very basic video games), and I created kind of an interactive love letter for her, with some questions for her to answer and everything. She loved that.
Go nerds!
EDIT: Oh, and welcome to The Escapist! You'll find this community to be one of the more intelligent online communities, if also... well you'll see. It's a great place. Enjoy!
Oh! I won't give any more spoilers then, but the books just keep getting better! Especially once you hit Summer Knight.Assassinator said:Of course not, sadly I haven't read the book in which she appears yet (I just read Storm Front actually, but I loved it so much that I ordered both Fool Moon and Grave Peril quickly afterwards) so I have no idea how she looks, only that she becomes Harry's apprentice... but I like surprises.LiteraryLitany said:You won't dump water on me if I drag out my Molly cosplay, will you?
The rose one...thats thoughtful. And I'd agree the personal thing... you could do everything by the book if you wanted to but something real personal and creative is best.ScruffyTheJanitor said:12 roses. 11 real, one plastic.
Note saying "My love for you will last until the last rose wilts."
That way she has something symbolic to burn when she says that it's over in the super angry voice commonly seen in movies.
Not sure about the areas you come from, but there's a "build a bear" factory shop nearby. You can make a bear from there and it gets all the mooshy stuff like a birth certificate and clothing. Point is, you buy two, and name one after yourself and one for your girlfirend. That way, no matter where you are, you can always sleep with your partner to snuggle with.
Whips and chains.... oh wait, probably not.
Bridges... bridges are romantic. Guys, wear something you can wrap around her. 'tis romantic but bloody freezing.
Can't say any of these would be sure-fire to be romantic. While there is a "romantic" genre where everything is red, candlelit, covered in rose petals etc... What is truly romantic is something that is personal and that depends on the girl. Just have to listen for the right thing, and plan it for the right time.

I'd probably cook a nice dinner for her and then show her the littleBIGplanet level I made for her the night before.S4rdonyx said:I'm going to be honest, I love nerd guys. I find they're intelligent, helpful and generally more romantic than most people give them credit for. If you have a girlfriend, what's the most romantic thing you're done for her? If you don't, what would be the most romantic thing you would do when find her?
Oh awesome, I'll get there in *calculates* about a month or 2, depending on arrival dates of the books. Maybe I'll just wait with reading Dune then, even though that's due to arrive earlier than Fool Moon. Or I can just stop gaming for a day or 2 and finish it in 1 go. I lurv reading.LiteraryLitany said:Oh! I won't give any more spoilers then, but the books just keep getting better! Especially once you hit Summer Knight.
Comes in handy if your girl adores the by the book stuff. But I agree with that, obviously, the most romantic things don't have to be those uber elaborate plans like the one I thought up, but those little yet extremely personal things you can only do if you really know a person.S4rdonyx said:The rose one...thats thoughtful. Eh, I learned with my first relationship that if gaming is a big part of your life and she's not into it, she's probably not for you. I know it seems kind of shallow, but this is the person you may spend your entire life with: to at least understand your love for nerdism is a requirement if its any big part of your life. So my advice: by all means wait until the person comes along, 'cause that's just smart. But if you need to keep your nerdiness separate from her, she's not for you. You don't want to live your entire life holding back that part of you.Pegghead said:Thaius said:On the contrary, a good relationship requires that both of you share, or at the very least understand, each others' interests. Umm... Why? It's a bad idea to be with someone you don't share interests with. Geek girls rock ^_^ I have one. She's awesome.Pegghead said:I think I'd try to keep my girlfriend and my geek life seperate, as in my life I have only ever experienced the latter. And that's not even all! You're not the only one who wonders that, sadly we all seem to be spread out rather thin across the globe. Well, I guess we have to comfort ourselves with the fact that this is a rather small planet.LiteraryLitany said:Loves Dune... And Dresden... And Reading... AND gaming... I beg to differ really. I must admit, healthy gaming competition between me and a nerdy girl is kiiiind of a fantasy of mine. Imagine: you're sitting there next to each other on the couch, trying to murder each other, one kills the other, it's almost a tie, she wins and looks on you with that sly look on her face....oh yeah.Pegghead said:To quote Strong bad playing first person shooters with your girlfriend kind of ruins them both.
*sigh* Yes, one hopes it gets small enough to find someone else eventually.Assassinator said:And that's not even all!
