Because people are assholes.

The hate comes from the instinctual need to shine the light of negativity away from yourself and on to someone else in order to make them feel better about themselves.

Personal insecurity. They are ashamed of their own nerd factor, so they feel the need to place another group lower on their mental hierarchy so they can say "Well, at least I'm not that".

I say it comes from them wanting to feel better about themselves, and creating an elitist chain. So like, to the cosplayer, they can think they can't be as bad as group B, and so on.

I don't do that... I appreciate the odd social groups; nerds, goths, whatever it is I like them better than the "normal" people. Perhaps it's because I'm quite strange myself but still, I don't hate other nerds regardless of their tastes. Now that's not to say I'm a perfect and kind person; it's quite the contrary, I hate lots of people. I hate on a personal level though.

Because someone always has to be on the bottom. (No, not in that way; get your mind out of the gutter or at least looking out of it) It doesn't help that generally nerds in general are considered "low down" on the social ladder. So some nerds like to raise themselves above other more "nerdy" nerds. Its in other ladder heirarchies as well. The top guy picks on the guy below him, that picks on his inferior, the inferior takes it out on his subordanite, and so and so forth until the poor last guy whose at the veeeeerry bottom, who can't do anything until a new newbie comes along. It makes people feel good about themselves when they know their above someone else.

Plus there are some rivalries in nerdom as well. So that can contribute to the infighting.

It's just basic human nature to distrust, fear, and hate things we don't know and/or don't understand. The division between "nerds" is just one form of such a relationship.

It's human instinct, especially in males to subconciously give ourselves a "ranking system" where each of us knows our position in any given group. It's also instinct to want to be as high up the ladder as we can get, because as the old saying goes "shit always goes down".

In the general social ladder, nerds/geeks/more than casual gamers/warhammer fans/anime fans are pretty low down in general. So much so that the higher ups won't notice any difference. Just as we don't see any difference in the atheletes/the naturally good looking/the people born into well off families/popular people who shall now be known as League 1. League 2 (nerds etc) generally view all of league 1 to be assholes for some reason or another. Within both Leagues, all different sub groups or individuals want to get to the top, or finish higher than others.

So we then get, as you put it, nerd on nerd hate. Individuals from league 2 rally behind their chosen group, be it anime, dnd or whatever, and start chest beating, trying to show themselves as "better" than the others. Some may be part of multiple sub groups, at which point they will generally bash what they are not a part of.

Of course it's not entirely as simple as I've just explained it, but if you remember that deep down we are all still animals things become easier to understand.

As an aside, although it should help explain my point. Next time you go out and see a group a girls, notice that most of them will generally be of a similar level of attractiveness. One, or possibly two depending on the size of the group will be far less attractive, most likely overweight aswell. Now conciously they are all friends and it's all good, subconciously, the main group of girls hang around with the less attractive one because it makes them look more appealing.

Now watch the way they move as a group. The most confident/best looking will always be at the front, the least attractive at the back of the group. I could be entirely wrong, however my friend and I spent an entire night at a club testing this theory and every group of girls that numbered 3 or more had the same thing going on.

I would go into male groups aswell but that's detracting away from the thread even more, so the tl;dr answer is: We're still animals, like it or not. We still think like them and act like them even if we don't realise it, which is why you will always find conflict between different groups of people.

Because they're different, and all of humanity has learned that different=bad/dangerous.

So they must be destroyed... of course since these are nerds we're talking about, "destroy" will have to mean "mock".

I'm guilty of nerd-on-nerd mocking.

I collect comic books. Play DnD. Purchased the collectors edition of Starcraft. Even have some WH40k figures. My most treasured Blu Rays are the box set of Battlestar Galactica (Ron Moore edition) and the remastered ST:TOS.

I am a full on total nerdboy from nerdville and quite frankly I'm ashamed.

But I just can't resist mocking Cosplayers. Especially gender-confused bodyshape-inappropriate cosplayers. You know the ones I mean. Sailor Moon with a neckbeard? Yeah. Can't help it. They make my skin crawl a bit. Every time I meet a fat guy dressed as a Stormtrooper, a little bit of my Star Wars love dies.

I'm a terrible human being.

I met a guy who called me a geek for paying for stuff in a game that you can play for free. He called me a true geek however we were still just playing the same game. It confuses me.

No offense to anyone, I'm all for the dressing up as different characters bit, it's fun. But you have to admit, some people are perturbed by it.

Now, this puts me in a difficult position. I'm not a typical nerd (who is, in the broadest sense?). I'm not entirely into the middle ages or sci-fi. I saw the Star Wars series, but I never dared to dwell into it's expanded universe. I have watched/am watching and like only a select few anime's, most of witch are not mainstream (School Rumble, Le Chevalier D'Eon. I would never dream of cosplaying. However, I find Dungeons and Dragons to be the most interesting-looking game in the world. I'm not into researching it's universe, or novels, but rather the game itself. Why? Because I am flawlessly seduced by the amount of freedom and creativity you are given in the game. The problem, of course, is D&D's current status in modern society. Because of it, none of my friends will play it with me (my prediction), and I'm afraid to so much as buy the thing as I'm afraid someone will find it in my house. Needless to say, :(

EDIT: see above post for why I don't like shows like Naruto.

Scratch that, I think I'm good.

From Wikipedia's entry on Vin Diesel:
"Diesel has played Dungeons & Dragons for over twenty years[17] and wrote the foreword for the commemorative book 30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons. In the 30th Anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons issue of Dragon Magazine, they examine the fact that Diesel played Dungeons & Dragons, and reveal that he had a fake tattoo of his character's name, "Melkor," on his stomach while filming xXx."

Maybe it's because people think that what they like and know about is superior to what everyone else likes, even when it all falls under the category of 'assorted nerdy things.' That category contains a lot of stuff, and not everyone likes all of that stuff.

Humans form groups, because it's our very nature to want to belong, we're pack animals, so we form tribes, clans, nations, religions, races, even though all those things are human inventions or exaggerations. That's fairly easy to understand, but when groups get large we tend to form subgroups, and it's also human nature to compete with other groups, and subgroups, which leads to this nerd vs. nerd mentality.

Trekkies vs warsies (star wars) anyone?

It's also nice to know there are people who like something more 'nerdie' then what your personal niche is. Especially if your mindfull/insecure of what the people around you think of your hobbies.

No picard vs kirk unltimate nerd war.

Well i dunno i don't hate my fellow nerds unless they are asses already
