You lead, I'll follow.

(God, I hope you aren't a Lemming)
Don't worry, I'm not a lemming.

Though I'm not sure how we'll convince the masses that football is a similar sort of thing to comic books...

Because...nerd is an insult? Gamers are not the same group as nerds! You can play games and still be cool, social or whatever. Nerds are those people who don't like sports, they are smart, but they can't even talk to a girl, they probably wear something, that looks boring or casual.
That is a group, that no (sane) people want to be in.
When you say that someone plays football, how can he consider it as an insult? When someone says that your a nerd, then he probably thinks that you have no social skills, that you have no style, you like to do your homework and you have a body of a girl.
(depends on the definition of the word ''nerd'')
I know that nerds and gamers aren't the same thing but there's nothing wrong with being either, Whats so bad about being smart but shy and wearing casual clothes? Personally I would rather be smart than be able to hit a baseball or throw a football and I would rather wear "casual" cheap clothes over a 60 dollar aeropostale shirt that's basically just a normal T-shirt I could get for $2 with the company name slapped on the front

Essentially it is an old society driven perspective, established long preceding the revolution of video games and anime to the enormous popularity they now garner; one of those meaningless stereotypical viewpoints which has yet to cease existence. Such is akin to being stunned for not having sex or a girlfriend prior to one's twenty first birthday (Eighteenth in some cases), well educated people are either weak, arrogant, social rejects or a combination of the three and activity driven people are "dumb jocks."

It has gradually dwindled this generation as technology takes presence as the universe form of entertainment however decades may pass before such is altered largely, only then replaced by another stereotype.

Suffice to say, it is "cooler" to claim you are a well versed athlete than a computer wiz, despite the only difference being which muscles are put to use. A means to shatter a stereotype is by proving it wrong.

I'm a gamer, who programs, enjoys maths and loves tinkering with computers.
I also go out a lot, have friends and can talk to women easily.
I have more balance when I have some sort of board between my feet than I do just walking as well.

Labels don't work, they just generalise a huge group of people that obviously aren't defined by one personal trait.

I'll happily call myself a nerd, and I'll fix my friends computers and help them out with nerd problems, I don't see it as an insult, but then again I don't look like the stereotypical nerd at all, and nor does anyone I've ever been to a LAN party with. :p

Labeling speaks worse of one who is in a hurry to apply them than they do the person being labeled.

I guess I'm a nerd - I fit all the criteria at least. But I do agree that many people who consider themselves gamers are not gamers - Though in my mind it's the other way around - the people who play only CoD and Halo aren't gamers, whereas the people who preordered dragon age and have beaten baldur's gate a half dozen times are :)

(Yes I know, oddly specific, but you get my point, yeah?)

personally, Id like to see "bitchin" used more as an adjective for... well anything.

but as for your topic, I think there there is still a kind of persona and other kind of stereotype associated with a person being a nerd to becoming a gamer.... and it really is more about how times change... on the opposite side of that... some things never change like the image of a nerd in most peoples minds.

But normal people can be smart, wear good looking, cheap clothes, play football and other sports. It kind of bothers me, when people have no style, no social skills, no interest in sports...seems kind of like a robot more then a human.
I would like to hear your definition on the word ''nerd''.

I hate people who only play one or two mainstream games then call them selves gamers... Like I know TECHNICALLY they are gamers, because they play games, but if all you do is play CoD or Halo, or what ever big name group, I do not consider you a gamer, I just call you a talented casual gamer if you're good at it, or if you are not just a casual gamer.

You become a gamer in my mind, when you know about other games that don't have 24/7 adverts on TV, and read up on gaming related news. For the most part everyone on this forum I would consider a gamer, regardless t oskill as you most likely read the articles upon gaming. +1 to you chaps.

Wait, this is kinda off topic...

Oh and to answer one, nerd is associated with a pasty fat white kid in a basement playing D&D, where as A footballer is associated with a tan muscled dude, that has tons of girls hanging around him. It's just the image that comes along with the name that has the "Sting" to it, remove the image from nerd, and it'll become the near same thing to Football, not a insult just a title.

In my oppinion you're thinking about the very extreme kind of nerd that assumingly has some kind of mental condition.

I have yet to meet a smart guy who isn't a gamer as well. On the other hand I also go to a school with very few people (only 23 people my age).

People who are both athletic and good at school seem pretty rare.

A nerd is someone who is particularly good at something, usually school. A nerd doesn't neccesarily mean an anti-social person.

As soon as someone grows up to understand that there is no black or white and everything is relative, labels mysteriously disappear from their vocabulary.

This is to Ryuks comment:
How is it like a robot that a person just isn't like that people are different there is no such thing as "normal" it's a concept just like "nerd" and "jock" and I know your saying that people who are like that leans more towards the social thing than the sports thing but the answer is just some people either don't like people or are not good at talking to people its a mindset personally sometimes I WOULD rather just read by myself than be with a bunch of people.

Also My definition of the word nerd is a tag given to people who have any of the following traits, read comics, plays video games/ tabletop games etc. are smart/ are not good at making friends.

And you saying that you don't like nerds because they have no social skills can become a paradox like so, in your words you don't like them because they have no social skills, but they have no social skills because nobody likes them etc etc to answer your social skills comment.

To be honest mate, you come off just as judgemental as those people you're complaining about. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

That said, it always made me laugh in school that all the badmen would ever talk about was Xbox360 and PS3, the 360 vs PS3 convos would get so heated and passionated I began to think they all posted on forums. Which they might have, because everyone is pretty average really.

But yea, you're obviously upset in someway about certain peoples attitudes to people who play video games or what not and how they think they are better because they're big and 'ard, thing is, you're posting here about how you think you're better because you're smart. It's the same thing.

In conclusion, I get were you're coming from, but you should try and be less bitter, you might end up making more friends that way.

Theres something I don't get, 2 things actually about school groups like nerds and sports people.

1.If nerd is just another group why is it seen mostly as an insult?

2. Why are people who play certain. video games aren't considered gamers?
1. High School has naturally hated nerds due too people's own insecuritys so they pick on this group to make them selves seem less pathetic when in reality there is no differance.

2. A gamer is someone who plays games as a hobby and has knowledge that spreads across the topic. A person who plays only WOW or only COD is just a person who playes games.

Overall. Eventually we shall move out of the mentality we are in. Just not anytime soon.

Nerd

?noun Slang.
1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.

Just say'n.
Undeadundertaker333 said:
What I mean by 1. is that if I was to go up to say a football player and say "HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA YOU PLAY FOOTBALL HAHAHAHA" he would just say "yeah I do"
... and if someone calls me a nerd i say : "Yeah, i am."

If I feel like it, I just say something about how they never could be good at school even if they wanted, but I'm a nerd because i want to be.

They might not react to that in public, but that's what usually makes people assholes and you just know it really hurts them deep down.

It also helps that I'm actually quite good at sports and muscular.

Without the nerds, where would we be?
I go to a tech college (RIT to be exact). Hockey is our big sport here and whenever the opposing team scores a goal, the crowd will chant, "That's alright, that's okay, we're gonna be your boss someday!"

Thought it pertained.
That is absolute class :)

Back over the pond we play a lot of Rugby at secondary school level, and we're the only state (read free) school in our league, and surprisingly one of the more dominat teams. So our chant has always been "What a waste of money, what a waste of moooney"
