I get that. Almost all the guys at my school have MW2, and that includes the sports jocks. The scary thing is, the biggest, most popular guy in my school not only does sports, but is even more of a nerd than I am. He was trying to explain L4D2 to his girlfriend in English, and I was resisting the urge to scream, "NICK FUCKING RULES OK!"

I go to a tech college (RIT to be exact). Hockey is our big sport here and whenever the opposing team scores a goal, the crowd will chant, "That's alright, that's okay, we're gonna be your boss someday!"

That is one of the best chants I've heard, and I'm a life long die hard football (soccer) fan. I would love if that chant spread over to English football, would be great for using at some of them northerners.

Because...nerd is an insult? Gamers are not the same group as nerds! You can play games and still be cool, social or whatever. Nerds are those people who don't like sports, they are smart, but they can't even talk to a girl, they probably wear something, that looks boring or casual.
That is a group, that no (sane) people want to be in.
When you say that someone plays football, how can he consider it as an insult? When someone says that your a nerd, then he probably thinks that you have no social skills, that you have no style, you like to do your homework and you have a body of a girl.

I know that nerds and gamers aren't the same thing but there's nothing wrong with being either, Whats so bad about being smart but shy and wearing casual clothes? Personally I would rather be smart than be able to hit a baseball or throw a football and I would rather wear "casual" cheap clothes over a 60 dollar aeropostale shirt that's basically just a normal T-shirt I could get for $2 with the company name slapped on the front

But normal people can be smart, wear good looking, cheap clothes, play football and other sports. It kind of bothers me, when people have no style, no social skills, no interest in sports...seems kind of like a robot more then a human.

Yeah my definition and people around me's definition of nerd seems to differ from the OP's.
'Nerds' are not identified by their intelligence. The stereotypical 'nerd' for me would be a guy with no dress sense, poor social skills and fashions around a d20 pendant. Furthermore I've seen people who fall quite close to the stereotype who weren't all that bright.

And you saying that you don't like nerds because they have no social skills can become a paradox like so, in your words you don't like them because they have no social skills, but they have no social skills because nobody likes them etc etc to answer your social skills comment.

From my experience it was usually the other way around, perhaps it's more of an american high school thing. I used to be an extremely anti-social person and was horrifically inept at interacting with people, but believe it or not there are the elitist kind of nerds that even I'm not a fan of. These guys have a belief that they are superior to other people in smarts and will rather coop themselves in and not make the extra effort.

Maybe it's just me but I've not heard the word nerd used in an insult in my whole life. It's just used in a sarcastic manner around where I am. Most people I know admit that they have an inner nerd, and usually do not even attempt to hide it. Plus why do people think characteristics of jock, intelligence and nerd cannot overlap, but nerd and intelligence must? Most people I know who do sports and have been known to represent their school, uni or borough aren't no brain all brawn. The best example would be a mate of mine who was a rower, I think he was one of the best in my school and in his uni team, who studies physics and is a massive scifi nerd. On the polar opposite I've met a guy who loved DnD, shunned most social activities and behaved like an elitist upclass twat. Thing is that this guy failed his first year in uni and had to repeat, whilst my rowing mate got a first even with sporting commitments and going out atleast twice everyweek (with the exception of exam period).

I hope people will soon realise that "nerds" and "jocks" actually make up a very small minority of real society. Most people are just average, boring people, who like a bit of everything, sports and games combined.

It comes down to long held preconceptions. Like any stereotype, they can take a long time to break down. If any of the recent happenings (I'm meaning MW2's sales), it could be starting soon...

Eh, I don't care. What people say about me Nerd just seems to be synonymous with a failure as they aren't strong and get a lot of chicks. While in fact, they'll be doing the jock's taxes one day...and make a 'mistake' here and there
