What if I use Netflix over Hulu because I really, really hate ads? Honestly I would probably prefer Hulu's selection, but I get visibly pissed when I have to wait even 3 seconds to watch what I actually want to watch.
Would you be willing to pay an extra $3-5 to go ad-free? I suppose I might be, which is why I'm asking.
For Hulu? Maybe. For Netflix? I'd feel cheated, so no.

Did he just say what amounts to 'Its okay we dont have these films anymore, because other paid services have them still, so you can just have an extra paid service to solve the problem!'

Man, these people are on a whole different plane of reasoning.

DVDs still exist people. Netflix through the mail
1- Has pretty much every thing ever released on DVD ever
2- Can usually get it to you in 24 hours (only a little slower than Hulu)
and 3- Only watching media watching for 2 hours every other day is probably good for me.

I'm kind of inching closer and closer to just cancelling my Netflix subscription. They don't add enough stuff I actually care about, the only time they get good movies is when the lead actor in them has just died, and it takes so long for them to get new episodes of anything that I'm not sure why I'm paying them. I mean the whole fucking point of Netflix is supposed to be "You give us a little money and we make watching stuff you'd otherwise download legal" - but when it takes forever for them to actually upload the things you want to see, or they never actually do then they aren't an alternative to downloading.

Not to mention, the Netflix user interface is getting worse and worse for some reason. That horrible "keep watching" section that prompts you to keep watching every damn movie you clicked off before the end credits fully rolled, and every show you didn't like so you stopped watching. What's up with that? Not everything I ever stopped watching is something I want to be reminded to keep watching.

Welcome to the future and the world of digital distribution, where your favourite movie, game, whatever can disappear on a whim with the very real possibility that you may never have a chance to see it again.

No, you cannot get netflix in your country. only a few western European countries and north America can use it. unless you use VPNs or something. oh yeah and Australia i guess.

Wait. Hulu is getting the movies? The main downside to Hulu has always been its movie selection. Hulu is going to be a goddamn streaming powerhouse. (Even more than they are now)
no, the downside to Hulu is that after paying an extortionate amount they still think its ok to serve ads in the middle of your viewing experience.
the VPN thing actually works quite well, as an american, there have been quite a few times that we didn't get something that some other european country did, I'd be over at a friends place and we'd get it up and running in about 20 seconds.

also, completely agree with the Hulu thing, I would rather eat shit then pay hulu just to watch stupid motherfucking ads, it drives me insane and they can fuck off if they ever expect me to use that site while they are still forcing ads on paid users.

Take what you want, just bring back Mystery Science Theater and leave Danger 5 and Trailer Park Boys where they are.

Netflix and HuluPlus have always been my entertainment one-two punch. So I guess this means I won't get impacted at all.

It's kind of funny though, this means that HuluPlus and Netflix are effectively trading places somewhat with Hulu starting as the best source for TV but now going to movies and Netflix now focusing more on TV and heading slightly away from movies.

Isn't the digital era grand? I mean, what's the point anymore in having physical copies of our entertainment when we can just go online and hope some studio conflict hasn't gotten dozens of movies removed watch it?
And people wonder why i wont give up my Blu-ray discs. Exhibit A right there.

According to Wikipedia, Hulu is a joint venture between ABC, Fox and NBC. That's all you need to know about why Hulu sucks. Netflix stepped on the turf of the big networks, with it's ad-free streaming and they won't have it. They will spend their enormous bank accounts to buy back rights with exclusivity so the advertisers can get their content back into consumers' faces.

Btw, I have Netflix, and have tried Hulu in the past, but the fact I'm paying for a service that forces ads on me (often the same one over and over) is not worth my money or time. The ads often mess up the stream as well and makes pausing, stopping or fast-forwarding/rewinding a crapshoot into ad-land. No thank you.

Luckily I have enough patience to wait for Blu-ray releases or Redbox or Netflix for the few things I want to watch. We also get over-the-air channels.

That is the crux of online services.

There is no way to get into something that provides most of the content out there. Unless you are willing to pay for several services at the same time, there is no way to guaranty that a service will have the content you want to see. There was a time when Netflix was the de facto standard for TV distribution, but now every chain has its own service, with its own subscription plans and exclusivity deals. If you wanted to have a varied enough catalog, you would end up paying more than cable...

I would like to know if all the companies cannibalizing themselves actually helps them in the long run or just poisons the pool for everyone because of people not being able keep up with the options to watch Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Narcos, WWE Raw or whatever is new without a subscription to the latest package.

This is one of the cases where I can't justify not using torrent or other pirate based formats... I am paying cable, which includes a subscription to FX, I shouldn't have to pay extra to FOX Play just to see The Strain without commercials or adherence to a strict calendar.

Pretty much this...like times a billion.

This is why I always prefer physical copies over digital copies. That way if any antics by studio's happen, I can still enjoy my stuff without worry.
