I went to see Watchmen yesterday. Great movie, well done, faithful to the book... just one, nagging little problem I had. I went to it with my dad. You'd figure I'd learned my lesson from 300, but no, we go together. That easily could have been the most awkward thing ever.

details, man, details.
Lots and lots of breasts. Lots of them. I mean, seriously, the movie was dripping with mammary glands.

Did I mention the breasts?

could be the fact a certain blue sausage waggled itself across the screen a few too many times

Well, on sunday I will be seeing it with my two friends, one of thems a lesbian, the other one is a hardcore conservatie, and im the "Straight Man" in this crime fighting trio. Hopefully the awkwardness will not apply to us.

I was lucky enough to only go with a few friends and I also didn't really give my parents a recommendation for the movie, so, if they're lucky, they'll avoid that certain blue... appendage... you're talking about.

Hmm my dad asked me not 15 minutes ago if I wanted to go see it this weekend. I'm gonna have to politely decline. I have heard about the cacophony of dicks that are in this movie, along with boobs and semi hardcore pr0nz.

Essentially, there was a good 4 solid minutes of nerd porn.
so you were put off by getting to see some boobies with your dad? guess he's not taking you to the rippers when you come of age

i can possibly see it awkward with your mom but not really your dad, that's called father son bonding right there

I was amazed with how much they got away with, especially since I had heard nothing about any controversy involving an NC-17 rating, and with some of the movies like Clerks 2 having issues with that I was quite surprised when I saw it. It had scenes that were about as close to pornographic as possible.

To keep with the topic, I saw it with my girlfriend and a friend of mine and there was no awkwardness, but we DID see at least two adults with what must have been at most 12 year old kids and as soon as I saw them walk in I was just flabbergasted... Not only should they probably not have been exposed to those kinds of things like this, but from a nerd perspective I was appalled that kids would be allowed to watch it when they likely had no concept of the actual themes and ideas going on in the movie. Not saying it's not possible but most children at that age wouldn't be able to understand and so I was assuming the worst. I hate seeing things go unappreciated when I really like them, because then any opinion they form about it is based on incomplete information. Maybe if the parents discussed the ideas afterwards... I dunno. Just sad is all.

my dad personally wouldn't care re violence and sex. he'd just be more pissed that he wasted time on a film like that. 300 was ass, sin city was ass. i enjoyed watchmen for entertainment value. here is a simple trick - try explaining the plot line in detail to someone who hasn't seen it and do it in under 2 hours and without flow charts.

SPOILERS:______________________________________________________________________________

"well, see, this guy called the comedian gets killed and he was in vietnam and hes gets killed by a masked mad guy who isn't really bad because the comedian is kind of bad but he really was just misunderstood because even though he tried to rape someone he actually gave life to a precious girl who is the superhero who took over her mother who originally had sex (almost raped first time) with the comedian but her life ends up being a miracle necessary for a guy called dr manhattan to save the world but he doesnt because he's too busy on mars with a huge glass clockwork thing from final fantasy 8 and he sees the future but can't predict what happens because everything happens in a way that is good but bad because it means that a guy called rorschach dies even though he is kinda good but he sounds like batman a bit and he explodes after they battle the masked bad guy who is actually good because he's the smartest man ever who worships the greek name of an egyptian pharoah and creates a random blue tiger who he destroys when he tries to trap doctor manhattan and the smartest man ever has become rich off selling his own image but he knows that the world is going to die because of capitalism and so hes going to create a renewable energy source but you dont really know what that is but he saves the world from nuclear war by framing doctor manhattan after making doctor manhattan go to the moon by spending 30 years killing dr manhattans friends and family with cancerous gas and exploiting his psychological profile and dr manhattan came about because a nice scientist got trapped in a room where he got discombobulated and noone could save him because they were busy looking through the glass and crying and then he reappeared and was immortal and all knowing but not really and this guy called the night owl..."
you get the point.

NC-17 is based more on violence. However it's really dodgy and you have to get INSANEly graphic.
To gain it for pornographic rating it has to have no artistic merit (see Clerks1/2), be rather gratuitous, seriously, very few nipples, and you have to show it in a tasteless manner IE: erect.
Dr. Manhatten's penis scenes were minimal, and very strong statements about his disconnection from humanity. It had artistic merit to it, was not gratuitous, an you never once seen him using it.
I'm not referring to Dr. Manhattan, I'm referring to
the scene in Archimedes where Night Owl and Silk Spectre (No I don't ever remember their names) have a scene that one might see in a late night Skinemax special. It wasn't uncomfortable in itself, and in fact in context the scene is perfect for portraying the mindset of the people who would play these roles, but I still thought it went a little over the top.

That said, you DID see the violence in the movie, right? That was also some of the most graphic violence I've seen in any movie, though admittedly I don't watch many horror films. Clerks 2 was actually just the first film that popped into my head but I'm sure there were violent films as well that had similar issues.

- Plot -
To be fair, the plot isn't nearly as important to the film as the psychological profiling and characterization that takes place. Albeit the main story has one of my favorite alternate-universe endings, what is important are the people. Maybe explain it like this:

The film follows the lives and psyches of several out-of-work heroes in a dystopian parallel universe. It takes a deeper look at not only the individual thought process of those who would commit themselves to this type of vigilante justice, but also from the other side the mob mentality of those driven by fear who will lash out at anyone who claims a position of power. The characters are driven by their own fears and psychoses to seek out an unseen villain who is murdering the old heroes for reasons unknown, which leads them all to confront themselves and the world they live in, even at the cost of their safety and sanity.

In fact, more people should explain it like this to young kids who express an interest in it. If they still want to see it after hearing this, take them. They're PROBABLY mature enough for it.
