I want my first born son to glow gold. Then I could tell him he's the chosen one so he'd get his own videogame where he fights orcs or something

Incoming meme in 3... 2...

Now all we need is a cat that doubles as a battery when hooked up to a pc and the internet will genuinely be

Wow, I'm still recovering from the barrage of cuteness.

Interesting in light of the possible HIV applications, as for the glowing itself? Eh, been done before with rabbits and all sorts of animals, as the article also states.

Sure, baby cats are cute, but so are baby mice.

Cuteness really shouldn't factor into how we treat animals and what things are acceptable to do to which of them, rather their capability for suffering is what's important.

Much of the unease with this stems from these animals' historical roles as pets, not from proper considerations. Dogs and cats are eaten in other parts of the world, as are horses etc., it's cultural.

Summary: oh here is a really strange and cute animal thing we've come up with. now lets kill it in the name of science.

really?

pardon me if i don't think the ends justify the means.

Im pretty sure lives of handful of cats > future faith of humanity. If you think they are doing it for fun and entertainment, you are wrong.

Seriously what's it with scientists and making animals glow.

Also this could be a great meme.

Because cats weren't already good enough at waking you up in the middle of the night. Right?

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Kitten's light!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Ahhh GFP. The one undeniable proof that scientists get to occasionally throw up their hands, yell "screw this", and do some science just for kicks.

I've lost count of how many things glow now.
It glows and purrs. How many things do that? :p...
Sorry, that was wrong...

But on topic. I think this is interesting but i don't know if I would like a glowing cat... I wonder when we will have self lighting lenses in our eyes. That'd be cool.

I cant imagine how much it would actually cost to make a cat glow in the dark like that and sale it retail.

Still, this sounds like progress to me. though once cat ladies around the world hear theres bound to be protests and shouts of how inhumane this is.
I never heard anyone complain about twisty cat breeding.
I honestly have no idea what that is Im not going to lie.
a twisty cat is a cat that was born with their legs twisted inward forcing them to walk on ankle stumps.

KITTEH!!!!
As somebody who dabbles in the mysterious art of science (SCIENCE!!!) frequently, I suppose I should dampen everybody's enthusiasm vis-a-vis the fact that some cats
KITTEH!!!!
are now fluorescent. Sadly, it takes a source light of lower frequency in order to make them glow, which may be hazardous to their eyes. Furthermore, the glow is quite faint. That said, I don't quite understand how how the fact that the cats
KITTEH!!!!
are fluorescent will be of any benefit in studying FIV, but I'm no biologist. These glow-in-the-dark things modern day Frankensteins keep producing out of sheer boredom or funding from lunies aren't new either. I attended a seminar where a professor had luciferase (makes fireflies glow) be expressed in the cell walls of tobacco plants in order to test whether ATP accumulates there. Turns out yes, and he produced glowing tobacco. I'm sure there was much maniacal laughter...

But how does science get done in such close proximity to cats? :O

This is uncomfortably close to the truth...
