Okay, I was resisting all those calls from the Halo-haters of Microsoft milking the cash cow, but if this survey is any evidence, the motherfuckers got it right.

Honestly, that's just selling out.
Maybe Bungie did do better in terms of product quality when it was still independent...they definitely shouldn't be making games based on their commercial viability, but just on whatever good, original ideas they have that work.

Another idea:
"Helljumper"
You play as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST). Basically this is Halo meets Rainbow Six, maybe with some Ghost Recon and possibly the "choose your starting point" mechanic of of Medal of Honor: Airborne.

And I believe the histories of the Covenant and the Forerunners are fertile grounds to cultivate many games.
You mean how Halo ODST should've been?
Couldn't agree more.

The game looks great with new characters, story, and environments, but remember it started out as little more than a DLC-level addon...and really, it only amounts to a simple mod with a more fleshed-out campaign.
It was kind of disappointing that the perspective moved onto the common, human soldier in an elite unit, but it failed to really change the gameplay mechanic very much.

Watching the pod-drop in a cinematic can be thrilling, but actually playing it and controlling your own trajectory like you suggest would be totally mindblowing in how it would truly realize the 26th-Century's Paratrooper experience.
And squad-based gameplay would be much-needed...when you're in a team in the game, having intelligent, responsive AI teammates just makes sense.

And there's a whole gold mine of creative material out of the Halo Forerunner backstory.
I was totally blown away by the sheer amount of storytelling in the Forerunner's early battles with the Flood and their effort to save both themselves but also all other cataloged life in the galaxy.
Imagine SIM-type games where you establish colonies on other planets (more complex than Halo Wars, involving economics and resource management), ship-based RTS warfare with FR ships vs. infected Flood carrier ships, or just getting your hands on the awesome power of their world-building, AI-creating technology.

A bit like Sins of a Solar Empire?

Yeah, I'd imagine.
