Why does everyone seem to have such a negative opinion about it? I don't live there and I only go to the beach when I visit, but it never really seems that bad.

On the other hand, Maryland (it's my state, so I can insult it all I want) is full of issues. It has high crime and STD rates. The Chesapeake Bay, one of our defining features, is so polluted that it's best not to go into or fish out of it. And lets not forget the tune for our state anthem is the same as O Christmas Tree...

I've never heard anything positive about New Jersey. Or Maryland for that matter. Although there are apparently a lot of horseshoe crabs in the Chesapeake peninsula area, so I suppose that's a plus. But maybe that's just in Virginia.

Must be your Limerick.

I was in in Limerick this week. It was actually rather nice.
There's a town called called limerick? I must celebrate this by

I live in Philadelphia, and I hear something positive about New Jersey all the time.

When I listen to a radio station from New Jersey that broadcast over here.

But their ex-governor, Jon Corzine, was a really bad governor.

Yep. It's in the west of Ireland and has a bit of a rep.

Living in DC I venture out to Prince George County a lot and I can honestly say that yes its not the finest area. But NJ has been long known as just being a bunch of exits on the turnpike as people pass through from New York or Pennsylvania, etc. So its a long standing understanding that its kind of a shit hole and a dump. The reality is in many ways not as bad but stereotypes die hard.

Doesnt New Jeresy have the highest property tax of any state? If thats true then that may be a reason why people think it sucks.

That's what it is. The Mid-Atlantic Rest Stop.

As someone who lives in Jersey, I'll take a crack at this

We have the highest property tax and car insurance rates. Also the cost of living is one of the highest in the nation. Also we have one of the highest pollution rates and have the highest population density. Basically, we are known as the landmass between New York and Philadelphia. The Mafia is based here (not that I know anything about that sort of thing...) and I'm told we pioneered the mullet.
Also, the type of people found on "Jersey Shore" is unfortunately an accurate depiction of many here.

We also produce two-thirds of the world's cranberries and eggplants, so...That's something, right?

Did you hear about the you lady from Ealing?

She had a peculiar feeling,
So she laid on her back, opened her crack,
and pissed all over the ceiling.

I'm from New Jersey. While you are at the shore do you ever notice that there isn't anyone from here in the water that is because we know what we put in it. I'll spill the secret now medical waste, raw sewage and for good measure we still haven't got around to finding all the WW2 surplus just laying around on the beaches. We also got some areas like DC we have Camden,Newark,Trenton and a few other don't go into that part of town when it's dark kind of places. Right around where I'm from we have Seaside Heights or as everyone around there refers to it sleazeside and Atlantic City pretty nasty too. We have dirty politicians rabis that deal in the people parts blackmarket trades. A governer we had quit because he was cheating on his wife with a guy he hired for defence after 9/11 that even was telling people he did not know what the fuck to do if we ever got attacked. Trust me Springsteen is proud to be from here but happier than a pig in shit that he was able to get out.

Well, I can only really speak for New Yorkers, but for us it's because New Jersey is below us.

Also, it smells.
Well, the airports do, anyway. :p

That it smells horrible, the people are jerks, there are more tollbooths than anywhere else, there is nothing to do, it is unpleasant to look at, and it is so close to the best place on earth that by comparison it seems as bad as California
Atlantic city is nice though.

I've never been to the US, let alone New Jersey. So, what do people say about it that's so negative?
That it's dirty and known for nothing famous except Bruce Springsteen. Also, everyone makes fun of the stereotypical gweedos (which is racist).
