I always played Oblivion with Heavy Armor. But not this time! On my last character, I used LIGHT armor instead. Also I always play as an Argonian. That way I don't have to worry about breathing underwater and I don't have to worry about disease.
I always use swords though. I just can't resist chopping people to pieces with blades.
EDIT: I'll go play Oblivion right now to see what my character was specialized in.
if you want to be evil, definetly pick argonian. trust me it helps alot. especially the water breathing. if you want to be good, i liked the nord but you dont want the brute force so i whould say high elf for huge magic bonus.

Usually I like playing a pure mage "squishy wizard" type (usually High Elf with the Apprentice birthsign), or a warrior type with blade/heavy armour. I've tried dozens of character variations in all, though. I just recently started a new game as a Paladin type class.
He's an Imperial born under the sign of the Lady with:
Athletics
Armourer
Blunt
Block
Heavy Armour
Alteration
Restoration
Only level five at the moment, as I only started playing him a couple days ago, but it seems to be working quite well so far.
I've always went for an armor wearing fighter-stealth hybrid. A more combat oriented Agent, if you will.
Armorer
Security
Restoration
Heavy Armor
Blade
Hand-to-hand
Acrobatics/Athletics
I go with Strength and Endurance for my primary skills, giving me an edge in tough combat scenarios, while the issues of security and spells are a secondary concern which I can tackle at my leisure.
Also, for Oblivion, here's a general tip for anyone who wants it...learn Alchemy, you don't need it as a primary skill, but even at its Novice level it's useful to all Classes.
Now, as for the OP, I find my Custom class gets the job done, but it's kind of dreary...I'm trying out a pure Mage class, but it's still dreary and dull...a lot easier than Morrowind's Mages though.

Delfs were my favourite- until Oblivion turned them from badass, razor-throated warriors into white-Sclera'd, high pitch voiced pansies.
Now I roll Imperial, and class doesn't matter. I raise everything to 100 and steal shit from testinghall
God man, I know!! People can't tell me that was an attempt by Bethesda to show the Dunmer had changed once they had left Vardenfell, it was merely a move to save money by giving all the male elves the same voice actor.

My favorite is a pure mage:
Male High Elf (Great magic boost)
The Apprentice (+100 points magicka, 100% weakness to magic)
Pure Mage class
I choose this setup because I will be able to cast A LOT of spells before I run out of my huge amount of spell points.
You will be extremely weak toward magick, but if you can keep out of range of melee attacks and dodge the spells thrown at you, you should be fine.
Note, this setup causes Wraiths to become one of your most feared enemies, since they have a very nasty silence/frost spell. One hit from a Gloom Wraith can spell doom to you!
I would focus on Destruction, Restoration, and Conjuration. These are the most useful schools, Alteration is great if you need to pick locks or turn invisible, but a good invisibility spell takes some leveling up in Alteration (a lot) to get.
My pure Mage (pictured in my Avatar) has 100 destruction and almost 100 Conjuration. So I have started working with some longswords and light armor. I am very deadly.
NOTE-
It will be extremely difficulty to beat Cameron with this setup, because of his almost 100% resistance to magick. I suggest bringing a sword (unechanted) and know how to use it when you go to paradise![/quote]
straight up assasin ... it'll be hard work but it's really fun .. i usually cusom my own assasin but meh, can't be bothered to remember the exact skills
but here are some tips to spice up the game for a stealth charactor
1. major in alchemy, this makes the game a totally new experience
2. become a vampire, timing is everything .. you have to be very self aware to be a successful vamp ... if you're perceptive, sunlight becomes a minor inconvenience rather than a full blown weakness and so does social interaction
3. try a battle mage or a healer class .... becoming a full blown conjurer is also extremely fun
My current character is a Breton battlemage born under the Shadow. I don't remember all my major skills but I focused mainly on light armor, conjuration, alchemy, and blade. My conjuration skill recently maxed out so I'm now trying to raise my destruction skill.
My main character ended up being a female Redguard with the Thief birthsign and a custom class focusing on marksman and picking. I focused on stealth since it's so easy to level up and became a one-shot killer from a distance of most any mob in the game. Very rarely did I ever have to use my sword, even when the enemy was standing right in front of me. Cluelessly.
