New Okami in the Works?

A new trademark filed by Capcom suggests that the company might be exploring a future for what most had deemed a dead franchise: Okami.

It was best to let Okami go. The game, developed by the now defunct Clover Studios and released on the PS2 and later Wii, didn't exactly light up the charts despite cult love and critical acclaim, and when it's developers went their own way, most assumed that a sequel was not in the works. And rightfully so - with its creators (including central mastermind Hideki Kamiya) busy with other things, even if a sequel did happen, it might not have the same magic.

And yet, hope springs eternal and the unbelievable may happen. Capcom has filed a trademark for something called Okamiden. Would Capcom really file for something with the word "Okami" in it and not plan on having it have something to do with the series? It's certainly possible, but I think a tad unlikely.

What's the "den" mean, then? Well, Siliconera [http://www.siliconera.com/2009/08/21/is-okamiden-a-new-okami-game/] suggested that it could be a Japanese word play for a combination of Okami Gaiden or Okami Densentsu - which could mean "Okami Side-story" or "Okami Legend," roughly translated. So maybe some sort of spin-off game?

The Wii version of Okami isn't due for release until this Fall in Japan. Capcom could be planning an announcement of this Okami whatever it is to coincide with that, or they might just be trademarking things to cover their bases or just mess with us. I wouldn't put it past them. Now, can I see a God Hand trademark, please?

That would be awesome if it happened, but I doubt it will feel the same as its predecessor, what with everyone gone and all.

Clover is gone (thanks Capcom!) so if it's ever done, it would be by Capcom themselves. I have as much hope of this being great as Deus Ex 3.

I don't really want to have to make a post that's just weird, excited noises but that's all my mind can muster after hearing this news. So, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek YAY!

Edit: Or, as has been said, it might be terrible because the original team won't be working on it. But, you know what; shut up, you're wrong, it's going to be even better than the original!

I've got a bad feeling about this...

To clarify, turning a beautiful game like Okami into money-spewing cash-cow can't go well).

It better be bloody awesome, i loved that game. i dont care what the critics say. lol
There's some misunderstanding here, critics adored Okami as much as pretty much everyone else that played it.
The thought of another game with the same style as Okami and of the same quality... too good to be true? The optimist in me cries no but years of contact with the games industry and the world in general means that voice is a all but silent now.

I want a Okami sequel as much as the next man, but if the original minds from Clover won't be working on it, then I'm staying away. I highly doubt Capcom can match or even rival their creative charm.

If it's a Side Story, it's probably a a DS game where you play Issun.
If it's Okami Legend, it could be either a prequel where you play through the full experience of early Okami (unlikely since it was pretty much explored in Okami when you go back in time.) a game where you play Okami when he still lived with the gods.

While I want to disagree, I'm not sure I can.

I still hope, though. And really, unless this game gets reviews along the lines of Sonic Unleashed, I'll buy it. I'm like that.

What's with the negativity? Is a little optimism really that hard?

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. This game can go two ways. It can be magnificent... or extremely dissapointing.
