As mentioned above I would really recommend you to wait until the steam christmas sale starts before you start buying games. I always like to communicate with IM so steam and xfire for me since both got a great support for ingame chats.

You didn't specify what kind of games you like to play, care to give us an example?

I like MMO's and occasionally First Person Shooters. I love Singleplayer fantasy RPGs as well. I dislike puzzle and challenge games such as Super Meat Boy and Trials HD. Im into games that I've seen are fun, such as Trackmania, Anno 2070. I don't think Left 4 Dead is really for me - as I've played it on Xbox.

Alright then, then as a FPS I would recommend TF2, it´s free to play so what do you have to loose?

(will add some more games once I get home again, sorry :/)

Hey guys, I've just finished building my new computer, which has an i7 2600K proccesor and a GTX 580 Graphics Card, so it can run most games.
Most? You mean all games. Aside from super high resolutions (2560x1600) you shouldn't have any lag at ultra settings.

Hey guys, I've just finished building my new computer, which has an i7 2600K proccesor and a GTX 580 Graphics Card, so it can run most games. Thing is, I don't know anyone who plays games on PC anymore...or even PC etiquette..like how do you guys communicate etc.

If anyone want's to add me on Steam, and we can play some games and stuff, my Steam ID is: Avianion. At the moment, I don't really know which Steam games to buy or anything, but I was planning to buy and play Battlefield 3. I've got Minecraft, Terraria, Killing Floor and Magicka at the moment and I can definitely buy more.

If anyone can help by recommending games, introducing me to the scene etc.
Trust me, you will be able to run any game well into the next console generation. (probably through it if not for games like battlefield 3 that are made primarily for the PC.

I know it's been mentioned before, but I cannot stress enough how vital it is you wait until the Steam Holiday sale. There will be no point in buying games from them until that occurs.

Now, that being said, I'll lead things off by mentioning TF2 (again, mentioned earlier). It's the game that I have more hours invested in than any other game on my PC. You really have nothing to lose with a free game other than time, so absolutely give that a shot.

As for BF3: if you get it, you should join the Escapist group for that stuff; they're pretty cool folks. They just recently switched their voice stuff over to Mumble, so you might want to pick that up, again, if you are to get the game (which I'd highly suggest; it's so damn beautiful at higher settings).

Now, just a few random suggestions that you may or may not be interested in:
Atom Zombie Smasher
Bastion (please, oh please, buy this game)
Batman: Arkham City (the PhysX bits they added for nVidia cards is pretty nice looking)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (and the original, while you're at it)
The Fallouts (1 and 2 if you're more of an old fashioned RPGer, 3 and New Vegas if you're more of a Skyrim guy)
The Elder Scrolls III, IV, and V
The Orange Box (because the Half-life games are fun, Portal's great, and you get the nice version of TF2 in all one convenient pack)
Just Cause 2
Mass Effect 1,2
Portal 2
Civilization IV, V (currently addicted)

The Witcher 1 and 2.

Great PC experiences, and 2 will push your rig. Is a beautiful game.

PC staples -

Half Life Series
Deus Ex
The Knights of The Old Republic series
Warcraft and Starcraft series
Bioshock
The Elder Scrolls series
Any of the Total War games

Plus, the good thing about being a part of the master race, you can play games from other consoles as well, all in that little piece of heaven we call a PC.

Things to look into:
-BF3 for FPS and amazing graphics
-Skyrim for Open World RPG and mods. Lots and lots of mods
-Minecraft for random building, and socialising with people if you manage to find a nice friendly server like I have
-Starcraft 2 for RTS. Warning: Has intense multiplayer, especially for people new to the genre. You will get pwned. A lot. (Unless you have a reasonable amount of experience in RTS games, or until you do accumulate that experience)
-Any Total War game for a cross between RTS and 4X (Turn based strategy put simply). It is very fun to watch two armies charge each other to pieces. Medieval 2 is my favourite, but that is because I like the era more than the others and watching massive European medieval armies face off against each other, though there are technically better games in the franchise.
-Civilization 4 for full 4X gameplay. I don't like 5 as much, it simplified far too much of the game for my liking and 'forgot' about a lot of the awesome features that had been in 4 with all its expansions. That and 5's graphics weren't that good yet still stressed my laptop a fair bit, which isn't normal. It also had some amazing mods (Like the Fall From Heaven Age Of Ice scenario and FFH 2 mod)
-Crysis one for a large, relatively open world FPS with great graphics
-Dragon Age: Origins if you don't have it on another platform. A good RPG that stays reasonably true to older RPG titles.

Other than that, give me some time to think later and I'll come up with some.
