Didn't they try that with HD-DVD?kman123 said:Knowing Microsoft, developing a brand new format that can adapt on it's own, and will take over the world.
True fact.
And they failed.

Is it so important now to be original that we're going to call copycat at the notion of two consoles using the same disc medium?TheFinalFantasyWolf said:I reckon Xbox getting blu-ray would be a cheap copy of PS3.....like how both Playstation and Xbox now have motion controls like the Wii (facepalm).....Something new and original might be nice -_-.....you know, something the competitor DOESN'T have...

I was thinking USB's ages ago as a format for Movies/Games, and to be honest it could easily work, i'm surprised no one has used it as a format.Gudrests said:On topic: Blue-ray....or USB's or something but...Blue-ray
and when it doesnt work, we could just blow into it.RevRaptor said:I would love to see cartridges return, with the ssd tech at the moment cartridges would totally out preform bluray and no more scratched disks![]()
I think what it boils down to is this simple fact..How many CD's can you fit in a box...how many USB's. Which is more expensivearc1991 said:I was thinking USB's ages ago as a format for Movies/Games, and to be honest it could easily work, i'm surprised no one has used it as a format.Gudrests said:On topic: Blue-ray....or USB's or something but...Blue-ray
OT: Blu-Ray for sure, although as stated the USB idea could easily work
thats a terrible idea, think of how much they will charge for that crap.valkeminator said:Either way, Im more in favor of Hard Drive Direct Downloads.
What games are too small to fit on DVDs? I don't think I own a single game that isn't on a single disc :SEri said:I'm going to assume the next xbox won't have blu-ray. It would be lovely if it did, but it probably won't. DVDs are already too small for many games. They're even trying to squeeze out a last drop of life with the incoming May firmware update that gives a 15 percent-ish boost to disc space for their games.
If not blu, What are they planning on doing? Maybe trying to make their own new format just for the new console? Staying with DVDs even? Thoughts?
Yeh, sure, because the Xbox was a cheap copy of the PS2 and the Wii Was a cheap copy of the Xbox simply because they all used the DVD format?TheFinalFantasyWolf said:I reckon Xbox getting blu-ray would be a cheap copy of PS3.
No idea.Eri said:If not blu, What are they planning on doing?
Not unless Microsoft were hit with a Monumental Stupidity Ray. That's a massive financial investment with nothing to offset it. It would mean a massive increase in the costs of both the console AND the physical media.Maybe trying to make their own new format just for the new console?
Possibly.Staying with DVDs even?
What do amputee cats land on?Thoughts?

What cost and general annoyance are you referring to? It's not more than 30 dollars to make a blu-ray disk, it's several times less.Given the cost and general annoyance of bluray, I don't understand why anyone uses it. Flash memory is so much more versatile and works with much cheaper hardware. When ebay sells 32gb USB sticks for $~30 methinks there's absolutely no need for expensive and unnecessary blu rays or blu ray drives.
Well usually USB's are more expensive depending how many Gigs they can hold(a 16 gig is much more expensive than a 4 gig), A USB needs what? A gig or 2 to hold a game? Not even that. I have about 3-4 on one USB and it's only a 2 gig.Gudrests said:I think what it boils down to is this simple fact..How many CD's can you fit in a box...how many USB's. Fair enough lol. I genuinely hadn't come across it. Is it multidisc because there is a whole lot of content or because they didn't bother compressing the audio and video (ala metal gear solid 4).nobodylikesraisins said:La Noire is 3 disk.Dys said:What games are too small to fit on DVDs? The cost of a disk is near $30 to produce, flash drives are commercially sold for less than that. On top of that, a blu ray disc drive costs however much it costs, a USB (or similar) drive costs (probably) less than $10 to produce[footnote]I don't actually know how much, but it's so standard and mass produced that I can't see it being much[/footnote]. There's also the issues associated with lost/damaged discs, faulty lasers (and hence expensive repairs) and so on (especially weak compared to digital distribution). What cost and general annoyance are you referring to? yes, but as i understand it, the new disk format only increases the space by around 15%. not enough to avoid multiple disks all together.C2Ultima said:Last I heard, they were toying around with their own new disc format.
