Most game journalists are fools to themselves so it didn't get the support it deserved from the press. Doesn't check enough of the boring list of features they have that a title needs to be promoted to the community. It's probably going to go down as a cult classic that a few gamers never let go of like Killer7 or Planescape: Torment. Not sure that more marketing would have done the job since it's not really a mass market game like CoD or Mass Effect.

I was going to buy it, but some gameplay footage and Yahtzee's review made me change my mind.
Only costs 10£ now though, so I might get it just because!
Yahtzee might've called it shit, but Yahtzee's a pretty shitty reviewer. I wouldn't listen to him at all.

The gameplay is more like a beat'em'up with JRPG elements. Oh and magic.

I bought the game for $10. Pretty much a steal, I'd have paid the full retail for it.
Well, to be fair it was mainly the gameplay footage that put me off from getting it.
Checked it out a bit more after this thread though and I'm pretty sure I'll order it. As said; 10$/10£ is next to nothing for a game!

Yeah, I got it for about 10$ at gamestop the other week when I was at the mall with some friends and even though I'm only 2 hours in so far (Haven't really had much time to play it) it seems like a fairly good game. It kinda reminded me of Guilty Gear 2: Overture in that there doesn't seem to be anything inherently wrong with it, it's just not some reviewers' cup of tea so they say "LAWL IT'S SHIT" and move on.

Squeenix didn't develop it by the way, Cavia did, the creators of Darkengard. It's a great game, I'm 7 hours in and it's a blast! JRPG style with hack and slash? Ohh yeahhh. I bought it before Christmas because all I've heard was good news. It was ten bucks brand new (though after I bought it, they bumped the price up 20 bucks. Silly EB Games/Gamestop)!!

I'd agree with bad marketing, it was just thrown into the wilderness, like the majority of JRPGs for that matter, Resonance of Fate was the same in that respect. I've not completed it yet, but I really enjoyed what I did play of it. The gameplay and graphics could have done with some work, but the story and music was solid.

Oh and Square Enix didn't actually make it, since they're the publisher they probably had some say in it, but the developer was Cavia. Which unfortunately was absorbed recently, meaning no more games from them. Shame really.
Rats, Cavia got absorbed? But I loved Drakengard (which oddly enough connects to Nier)...

OT: I'd have to say marketing; I only heard about it from ZP, and when I was at EB, saw it was $50, found it was made by Cavia, and that the characters seemed Drakengard-esque. Took it home, played it, and it's one of my favorite games ever.
Yeah, I believe it got disbanded and absorbed into AQ Interactive which was it's parent company. Feelplus and Artoon were also absorbed too.

But yahtzee generally bashes anything that comes from the isle of Japan. I will say that I cannot fish in that game and that has made me quite stuck...quite stuck indeed.
I love the game (together with resonance of fate 2 really unappreciated games).
I have the same complaint about the game as the person i quoted... the bloody fishing. It almost made me yell at the game(aka badly swearing).

What i do love is when you turn on the game the swearing from Kainé towards Weiss(can not help but smile every time i hear it).

So if I don't really like this game, does that make me "Nier-sleighted?" lol :p

Well I guess I'm going to be one of the first people to comment that has actually played the game.

I bought it and regretted it. The gameplay was extremely repetitive. The graphics were not very impressive. The story was the only thing that had any appeal, and even that got stale. I just isn't that great of a game. The game's marketing was confusing. One version for PS3, One for the 360, and one for the PS3 in Japan only. No one knew what they were getting. The game itself felt stretched for the sake of making it longer than it needed to be.

I can definitely see why people would hate it. It's a little bland and repetitive.

But I still find it a ton of fun, I like the characters, I like the environment. The combat system is simple but functional.

Yahtzee trashed it.

Yahtzee could have done alot worse. If anything he was rather fair. Nier might not have been a super great game with glitzy marketing but it had its own certain charm.

All I can say is, Just go easy on the game. =) I for one liked it!

No mention of the music yet? Nier has the best soundtrack I've ever heard in a game.

If you base your purchasing choices on Yahtzee, you're a frikkin' idiot.
Nier is an excellent game. plays well and keeps you interested. That being said, I also thought Rise of The Argonauts was a belter once you got on the Argo, so what do I know?

Apart from my own mind.

As a gamer who looks for a decent story in a game above all else, I'd say Nier was a brilliant game that kept me up most of the night just to see what happened next.

Also if I remember correctly Yahtzee didn't say it was an overall bad game, he actually gave it a comparatively decent review compared to most games, although what he said about the soundtrack rings true, the soundtrack for this game is one of the best I've heard in a while but the tracks for each area themselves are too short and quickly get old when repeated over and over.

Back to the original topic I do think a lack of public awareness is to blame, no one I know has played the game and most hadn't even heard of it.
