Perhaps I should clarify my first point.
The game takes two days to beat, and that's not on mild. The experience is repetitive and the gameplay is only so/so. Getting new weapons is fun of course, but you'll honestly probably have two that are your favorites, two more that are okay, and the rest just gather dust. Also, the gameplay is not highly altered by swapping out your weaponry.
The bosses aren't "challenging" so much as they are "annoying". Just as a for instance, near the end, there is a boss who uses tentacles to stand up higher than you can reach, so for the bulk of the fight, you just dodge around. He can stay up like that for minutes at a time, only coming down to get hit once, and then back up again for another few minutes. That isn't fun anymore. It's not hard, it's just drawn out, tedious dodging.
The storyline is pitiful, and that's if you thought the first game's story was good. If you thought the first one was laughable, this is.... well I can't even think of a word. Every character in the game, including Ryu, is annoying.
There is virtually zero replay value. I played Ninja Gaiden 1 several times through, because I really enjoyed the gameplay. I almost didn't make it through the second one on my first go, because I was so bored by the end. I certainly wouldn't play it again.
Rental.
