I'm not sure the 3DS's technology really has to be seen to be believed. I've never seen a 3DS, but I assume the technology is pretty much this, right?
At 3 mins 30 seconds

They could just have a commercial showing something similar to what Johnny Lee here did.

umm I saw this video on youtube. "what 3DS could look like" ; He manages to show 3D quite well, maybe they should try this!

The problem with these is that these are just simple head tracking. It adjusts the perspective you see based on the direction you're looking at the screen. This is easier to display on a video that what Nintendo is doing. The 3DS is broadcasting two separate images to your eyes, something you can't do without using some kind of 3D technology.

Virtual Boy wasn't just a failure, it was a tragedy as well. Gunpei Yokoi, one of the greatest minds behind Nintedo's success, took the brunt of the criticism for it even though he said that it wasn't ready for launch. But Nintendo launched it anyway, beacuse they wanted to focus of the Nintendo 64, and it flopped terribly. Disgraced, Yokoi felt compelled to resign. While he died a year later due to unrelated reasons (he was accidentally crushed by two cars), it was still a great loss for the industry and Nintendo in particular. =(

Anyway, I agree with DarkRyter. If E3 showed anything, it is that hands-on demonstrations work best for marketing the 3DS. If they held demonstrations in places where people usually buy their games and hardware, I think it would have a great impact. From there, word of mouth would do the rest.

Either way, I hope the 3DS will be a success and that it will have a long lifecycle, beacuse I certainly plan to get it. :p

Since saying that Nintendo "wasn't completely successful" with the Virtual Boy feels like saying that the Chernobyl reactor "wasn't performing up to expectations," it's understandable that Nintendo's higherups might have seemed a bit wary over jumping into the 3D pool again.
Great line, or greatest line?

Stick demo stations in every game store known to man.

Kids will find it, play it, and yell "MOM, this is so cool! I want one!"

Everyone else will hear it through word of mouth via trustworthy sources. Such as this site.
That's exactly what I was thinking.

They need one in every EBGames, Futureshop, etc.

I wanna play one hands on, then I could make a judgement.

Why not just stick it in stores and let people play it?

I am sure they will find somthing, but then comes to the other problem...how do you advertise to people who cannot see the 3D?

Now! overcome that!

I don't know about a step backwards. But since it doesn't require glasses, I like it already. However, I used to get things that used parallax barrier out of Cracker Jack boxes. Those things were used to give the illusion of movement. This is used to give the illusion of three dimensions.

At best it's a step sideways. It's going to give Nintendo a boost in sales which it will need to keep going. Idiots will naturally say it's more immersive or some other rubbish when it is nothing of the kind. But idiots are also fickle. Soon they'll move on and Nintendo will as well.

"Can word-of-mouth alone sell a console?"

This will make me very interested in how the 3DS does. It'll probably be one of the best ways to witness just how well these kinds of products would do, if they couldn't rely on advertising being subtly shoved around the webspace or in magazines or in any other kind of 2D media outlets through which the subliminal mindfuck usually takes place.

I love my DSi XL. It's huge and does all kinds of stuff. I can't really afford to run out and buy a 3DS right now, and there would be no point in owning 3 DS's unless I wanted to make a rebuttal to Paul and his LRR skit. Not to mention I assume it's smaller again, although maybe thats not the case as I have no idea what size it is.

The only reason I'll eventually get it is because I won't be able to play the games I want on it. As I only own four DS games, two of them being Pokemon, I doubt I really have a need to rush out and buy a new one, lol. That being said, I'd still say the thing was awesome if indeed it is. So, put the thing in Walmart stores and let people try it out there. It won't take long for word of mouth to spread, and people will love it if it's worth it.

Thing is, this isn't just another variant of the DS...this is the next handheld, too. This isn't like the DS, the DS Lite, the DSi, and the DSi XL.

This is to the DS what the GBA was to the...GB.

This, really. You'll have LINES for the 3DS booths in some place.

They could also show that silly video at E3 with Miyamoto and Iwata getting sucked into the 3DS.

Yeah, others have already hit on it. Just send demo versions to stores across the country. They don't even need to be playable in the beginning, just have them show pretty images like the ones at E3. Make a site that lets people search for demo stations near them and make sure the television commercials let people know it's out there. That should sell people on the 3D feasibility and then later they can replace them with working demos and people can try out the gyro controls and see in-game graphics.

Distribution of all the demo 3DS's would take a lot of work, I'm sure, but I'm betting it will be worth it in the end. Actually it's not all that different than their other handheld launches, they just need to put more emphasis on the in-store demos when they advertise.

Am I the only one saddened that advertizing issues have taken over the conversation about the new gameboy? I could care less how marketing experts are going to convince me to buy something. They will either figure it out or not get their fat bonus checks. I am more interested in what can be done with the new hardware, and if some one has come up with an interesting new game dynamic to take advantage of it.

Really, I think that them NOT being able to market the 3D is advantageous if anything. If you wanna see it firsthand, you gotta buy it, so the novelty doesn't wear off at all through the marketing.

We see the cliche 3D events in movies. In a video game, they will become more cliche and turn into a gimmick, especially on hardware like a Nintendo. Maybe when 3D games like Metro 2033 become more prevalent, and just rely on environment for immersion, 3D gaming will be better. Because that is the point, right? Immersion. But this is just another invitation for Nintendo to make more of the same, but different, games, because they can't make an original IP for the modern era unless its tied to their hardwares gimmicks.

You sir, are frankly high. I would like to point you to an article [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.127546-Nintendos-Unsung-IPs-A-Treatise-On-the-Idiocy-of-A-Particular-Critique] I wrote several months ago, which should prove your post entirely wrong.

Why can't Metroid be enjoyable in 3D? Why does it have to be a shit-brown shooter like Metro 2033? Bagging on Nintendo doesn't make you cool: it just makes you seem like a misinformed dolt.

I didn't mean the game wouldn't be enjoyable. I meant it wouldn't help Nintendo do new things. Because now they'll have games like New Super Mario Bros. 3D and stuff. Metro isn't shit brown by any means, btw. Also, I'm not going to read that- I won't be swayed on 3D.
