Something like this is for parents who know nothing about gaming. Any six year old would be happy with an old SP and the thousand games out for it that you could get at any yard sale, if we all don't have one in a draw somewhere already.

All these people saying 3DS is selling well but providing no numbers.

Anyway, it's expensive to develop and market a new revision so they obviously feel that they aren't selling enough.

I think this is a great move by nintendo. it does seem like a more kid friendly model without the moving bits and bobs. though I do worry for the LCD screens. maybe it's bundled with a clip on cover?

Well see, the very existence of the 2DS brings the sales numbers of the 3DS into question. You don't create a cheaper version of a product just for shits and giggles.

The DS had the moving bits and bobs and Nintendo never felt the need to release a cheaper, less moving parts version.

I have read somewhere that the 3DS is doing great in Japan but not so great elsewhere.

Let me just add that the 3DS library is superior to the DS in my opinion but the 3DS is also having to compete against phones and tablets, something the DS never had to deal with.

Very sad state of affairs. Guess Nintendo didn't get the fax (they still use them, lamely) that kids have mobile phones and tablets that plug this gap now.

You have no idea that the 3DS has been outselling PS3 and Xbox 360 for at least 2 months now. Nintendo should sue some of these liars that say it's not selling well, doesn't it count as slander? Sure, it had a rough patch in its early days, but it's more than bounced back from that now, selling really well in every region, and the quality games are selling well as well, Animal Crossing New Leaf sold over 5 million in little over a month. Bring in the fact that we have the 6th Gen of Pokemon games coming this year, and that's the final nail in the Vita's coffin.

Still no numbers.

Anyway, Nintendo handhelds always outsell consoles don't they? Why even bring that up and whether or not it's outselling the Vita is a no-brainer. However, just how much are 3DS's selling each week in each region?

OK I have the numbers.

Last week: 35,711 in NA, 40,025 in Europe and 51,646 in Japan for a total of 135,135.

Is that good for a Nintendo handheld?

I dunno, I have a feeling they had this planned from day 1, and have left it so long to release it because all the parents who weren't sure about the price/the health aspect of the 3DS have now fallen into one of two camps - 1)No it's too expensive/will melt your eyes so you can't have it or 2)Sod it, go on then, Merry Christmas.

Now that they've fallen into these camps, Nintendo comes along and says to camp 1 here's a cheaper alternative which plays the same games but also doesn't have the eye melt function and costs less. Camp 2 have already purchased the more expensive 3DS.

I don't know numbers, but that's what I think caused the 2DS to exist.

Well if everyone who is going to buy a 3DS has already done so then they may as well replace the 3DS with the 2DS.

*shrugs* You know it might work.. and the new casing, yes its bigger and can't flip on itself I know. The new casing might.. might lead to bigger batteries. I said might because lets be fair Nintendo probably has put the same battery in there. It would though be nice to see actually a bigger battery in there. And yes I watched content patch before you ask. I like to be kept up to date on what kind of things happen you see.

But I agree with TB here it would be a chance to put a bigger battery in there.

Not saying the 3ds has an unworkable play time. it doesn't! But more is better ;)

What's all the fuss about this? It's cheaper than the 3DS, plays the 3DS games and there's no 3D gimmick.

And that's.......bad?

Think it will outsell the 3DS?

I think it will outsell the 3ds, 3d is gimmicky and irrelevant whereas $40 is awesome. This will probably get me back into handheld gaming for the first time in almost a decade. I'll finally be able to play the new pokemon games, I'm so excited. 5-7 my butt, this is aimed at poor nostalgic college kids who want to play pokemon and can't afford the 3ds

No idea. Not really concerned either. I've been meaning to get a 3DS but just haven't gotten around to it yet and if a cheaper option is now available then I'm happy. I imagine I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

$130 makes for a really cheap and durable kid's tablet that can play Pokemon and Mario, so it seems like a no-brainer.
I just don't get this thing, the 2ds emulates a dual screen but in fact it has only one touch screen, nintendo actually aded an plastic protect screen so the top "screen" isn't "touchable", why cripple your hardware, nintendo should have just made this the nintendo tablet or something it would have been better than this piece of cheap crap

I imagine that there are many like you who would sacrifice the 3D for a savings of $40. IMO, this is Nintendo competing against itself.

Doing that would make the 3DS obsolete if any new games used the second touch screen.

Cant wait to see how the second analog attachment for that thing looks like.
The 3ds xl turned from a brick into a monster, this thing will become a table without legs.

That thing looks really uncomfortable to hold... Granted it reminds me of an etch a sketch.

I know this is anecdotal evidence, but I'm going to give it anyways. My younger siblings are 11 and 13 right now, but have had DS' since the age of 7 and 8, respectively. Since then, my brother (11) has gone through three DS' and my sister (13) has gone through 1 because they've broken off the hinges. The 3DS' that they have, at least my brother's, is also starting to loosen. I won't be surprised if he manages to snap one off by Christmas.

Until those hinges are made of stronger stuff, it's fine if they're targeting the younger crowd with a hinge-less DS.
