pfft, at this point nintendo would probably have to pay me to play their games. I'm capable of pirating wii games and I'm not even doing that because I would rather buy oblivion for the fourth time than buy 50 blank dvds.

Well, I don't understand why we need friend codes... And the PC still has free online gaming. And it better stay that way. But I wouldn't really care about "subscribers" or whatever getting extra goodies. As long as they aren't of the game-breaking variety. It's like in MMO's. If there's stuff for sale, that is still topped by in game items, then I prefer to strive for the uber weapons. If there's game-breaking awesomeness that I can only get by handing over money, I shall not play your MMO lol.

It sounds to me like he's saying charging for online content has been considered but also rejected as not "active" enough.

Considering the state of the Wii's firmware, and how far into its life cycle we are at this point, I really can't say that I approve of any kind of new subscription plans for the Wii's online services.

They should just sit down and work on their equivalent of Xbox Live, and introduce it with their next piece of console hardware.

Who else gets the feeling nintendo never knows what the hell they're talking about?

Or that they are always 5 yeras late to the show on EVERYTHING?
Yeah, not like they did anything original at all... just 3d graphics... and portable systems... and consoles... and motion controls... and shooters with actual guns (duckhunt)...

fine, (since the year 2001) happy? And I don't value motion controls.

Although have Wi-Fi, my Wii is never on it anymore. It isn't like I am missing much. Brawl online was WAY too laggy for me, and I have no other games and no desire to use any of the channels like Wii Shop. That and I haven't updated in a long time and don't want to.

Ah, the good old gamers sense of entitlement rears it head yet again.

Things should cost what they cost. If you want something, it doesn't mean anyone has to give it to you for free.

Yep. I saw this thread and I was just like, "Well, goodbye Nintendo. You had a good run."

Remember, the bulk of Wii sales were made to overweight mothers and puzzled grandparents. They don't have any idea how this sort of thing works. If they hear about it, they'll likely say, "Oh, that sounds like the same thing I do with my cable TV," and fork over money.

If there's one thing Nintendo is good at, it's selling to the most out-of-touch demographic and then milking them for everything they've got.

Okay. What's a significant development the other consoles had made first that Nintendo didn't have? Remember, the Internet wasn't made by the console companies.

Hmmmm... I agree that this wouldn't work with Friend Codes, but subscription equals more money for Nintendo. More money means possibly more servers. More servers may mean Pokemon MMO?

Damn it I can dream!

You're not the only one. I think Nintendo stopped thinking when the Wii came out (ecpecially when you consider the fact that they chose Wii over the first name, which if my memory serves me, was "Nintendo Revolution")

Sorry... Nintendo doesn't have anything worth paying monthly for. There isn't a functional online component, not to any serious degree, and I don't see any path for getting one.

If a subscription fee gets rid of friend Codes, then I could see this working by just a sliver.

Trade one evil for another, it's all good, even though I'm opposed to paying for my online gaming in general.

So, subscriptions fee are being consider maybe in the future possibly... um, what was the point of this story? I understand that changing their online business model is a big change and news worthy but this sounds as if he just happened to mention it in passing and now everyone is getting excited over nothing.
