HAH! I fucking called it! Okay... no one on the Escapist could fully be expected to know that (unless you happen to have gone to Chaffey High School at some point in the last 4 years), but one day I was arguing with a friend about Nintendo vs. Sony. I was advocating Sony's games and consoles my friend was vainly trying to defend Nintendo's crap. So, anyway at one point in the conversation, I stated that Nintendo seemed to be going into an odd trend of deliberately ignoring what its customers wanted (at that time, "hardcore gamers"). Like, say, SONIC team ignoring every valid suggestion that their fans gave them. At the time of course, this trend hadn't been fully developed (or at least, it wasn't bluntly obvious to everyone, even those hard-core Nintendo fans that were in denial), and so my case at the time was somewhat invalid. But now, thanks to Keane's work, I have hard evidence to show said friend. Thank you!

There's only one problem with all of this: The SECOND they release footage of a new Mario or Zelda, the fanboys are going to stop whatever "boycott" they may have had running and scream "WANT WANT WANT". Instant million seller for Nintendo, and more reason for them to ignore the "core gamer".

Idiots, if they don't satisfy me, I lose interest and go wandering off into the Sony and Microsoft tangents that seem to care about people like us. So in short, Nintendo: If you want to alienate the fans of your good games, then go ahead, have it your way, although a strike from us won't do much to nintendo, we seem to be outnumbered 14697-1 by 4-yearolds. And we can't deny those 'darling little *spoiled brats* angels' of their funmachine games, so they wouldn't participate in said strike to make things better for the future. So soon, it will be them paying for their obliviousness as they grow and realize that nintendo had nothing for them when they finally grow to the mature old age of over 7! And then they will be in the same situation as us, trying to save the next generation of kids from falling to the Nintendo crap they're handing out now!

What an insult.

But instead of admitting that Nintendo should be doing more to satisfy core gamers, Kaigler reasons that withholding satisfaction from them is the best way to do things: "When we get to a point where core gamers say, 'OK, Nintendo, enough! We don't need any more games from you guys...' None of us wants to be in that position, right?"
When the hell would ANYONE say that? I mean, I've said it about a few games, but I always know at least ONE DIE HARD or even one REGULAR FAN who wants to run out, reserve it, babble on about how fun its going to be, then play it for TWO WEEKS STRAIGHT, and not leave me the fuck alone about how awsome it was...

Can't wait till the next generation of consoles come out as moment they peddling the "casual" demographic but will not be able to pull off a wii2 as all us so called core gamers gotten wise to their antics, their fan boys have been neglected and had eyes open (sad but all got to realise the magic has gone,) and their causal gamers would of either found way onto more rewarding systems or moved on as was only a fad like the wii was. As see who will come crawling back to it's once adoring fans and back peddle everything they ever said about its fans but for most damage will have been done and will say no more.

While my first reaction was to do a double facepalm, I decided to look at this from what the person was trying to say.

Mario is old. He's weak. He's tired. He's been in dozens of spinoffs of the main series from baseball to tennis to bowling to the olympics to DDR to a card game I think. People have been complaining alot "Let Mario die already, he's had enough!"

What this person is trying to say that if they gave us a bunch of Marios and Zeldas, we'd be going "My god Nintendo, stop rehashing the same old freakin' franchise!" and they'd be in a weird position.

Not giving us enough Mario games or Zelda games makes us want more and complain to them to do something that they pretty much always do.

Now that seeing the other side is over with, fuck YOU Nintendo! What great PR you've done here! Almost on par with Sony, but with them most people expect them to say stupid stuff and laugh at it.........while subsequently saying "lolololololol GayS3 sxzorz"...

See, it's a complex relationship where Nintendo is the provider and gamers are the consumers, and when gamers stop wanting to consume, Nintendo loses its purpose. "We don't want your appetite to ever be satisfied, because when we satisfy you, it's time for us to go," Kaigler said. "And none of us wants to go home. So there's this sort of fun...relationship, I think, that's happening between Nintendo and the hardcore gamer - which we enjoy and hope that the core gamer enjoys it."
LOOK AT ME WHILE I USE TWISTED LOGIC TO JUSTIFY MYSELF GUYS, WEEE!

Yeah, no Nintendo. It doesn't work like that. You cannot oversaturate the market with GOOD games, you dingleberries. You can certainly oversaturate it with mediorce or SHITTY games, but a GOOD game by definition has no saturation point and usually is so different/take enough time to make it's not a concern.

Stop being dicks and just admit the truth.

And the Sarah Palin award of awkward press interviews goes to...

I think what you will find is that for most of the 'great' game-consoles of the past they had frequent releases of good games, thus having an awesome library. This was true with the SNES, the 64, PS and PS2.

Nintendo have done nothing to keep the respect of their former fans, anyone that grows over 12 or has considerable time invested in the hobby will just be dissapointed with their new 'We don't care about you' philosophy.

I'm really quite baffled. Anyone that 'enjoys' this treatment is either a severe masochist or a pedo (only reason adults still use the Wii :p)

Quite frankly, I'm really proud of Nintendo. They realize that the "core" group of gamers will never be satisfied, and so they aren't going to rush the release of games just to satisfy assholes who will then turn around and say that Nintendo is "unoriginal". It shows that they aren't giving into pressure.

Also, as Jim Carrey said, "Sometimes anticipation can heighten the....pleasure."

Why do I get the feeling this article and the Nintendo spokesperson are using two different definitions of "satisfaction?"

Definition 1: Happiness and general approval.
Definition 2: Satiation and subsequent termination.

I can see why any business would want the second. And since I, rightly and wrongly, tend to associate "core" gamers as people with entitlement complexes the size of Mars, I'm having a lot of trouble stirring up outrage.

I would like Nintendo to give int oother pressures though. I WANT SOME NEW IP. I am getting tired of Mario and Zelda. I like that gameplay give ti to me in a different form. I enjoyed Okami much more then Twilight Princess. Metroid has lost its roots, I want exploration back.

The Wii has a crappy Library of games. The shovelware to playable quality games is ridiculous.

Nintendo should start selling all the old stuff again. Imagine if NES and old gameboy games were sold at Gamestop again? I know I would buy em.
While it isn't 'in the stores', they do have the Virtual Console and a classic controller. On it are a few hundred Nes, SNES, Sega Genesis and Master System, Sega Saturn, Gamecube, Dreamcast, etc etc and much older console games. They add to it almost on a monthly basis and many of the games are gold.

That and you can usually find GBA titles in your local used game store. They should be near the DS games. Why would you want to buy a b/w, next to impossible to beat old-school gameboy title is beyond me when roms are just a website away.
So i can play it anywhere. Sure I could download em and play them on my computer at home, but I cant bring my computer to places where I am expected to play my gameboy. Places where I am forced to go to and am bored at. Plus I like physically owning my things. I still buy my CDs than use iTunes for example. But also I can then use them in a car or put em on my 360.

If Nintendo made a new IP or focused on their neglected ones then they would satisfy everyone.

Call me stupid, but I don't believe Wii Music to be the 'real' filler between Mario games. Bring back proper Zelda, Mario, Metroid and Starfox titles. Bring hardcore gamers back to the Wii. I can guarantee that casual gamers have had their fill.

Give ME a REASON to by your system, Nintendo. Give me a reason. I've played the new Metroid, Mario and Zelda titles - and I'd rather play them on Gamecube than Wii. Give me a reason to buy a Wii, and I will do so. There have been none so far.

Then what's stopping you from pulling out your b/w gameboy instead of buying something like, say, a ds, and buying new games off of a website such as amazon or ebay? Just because they are not in the store does not mean that they are impossible to find.

I also use a CD player, on the by.

I think that logic just made me die a little inside.

Thanks Nintendo. Just thanks for killing my sad excuse for a childhood.

Here's the way it went for me.
Atari 2600
Super Nintendo
Playstation
Nintendo 64
And now I had the choice of xbox, gamecube, or PS2. At this age (I forgot how old I was but I'm 19 now) I realized thas I got older I was gonna need more mature things. Nintendo did not provide that and I had played on the xbox so I went with what I knew and got the xbox.
Next big choice: Wii, Xbox 360, or PS3. Nintendo again failed to provide for the people who want a game with substance, something with a deep story, violent action, and good graphics. At this point the PS3 was too exspensive so I got the xbox 360 elite.

Nintendo, you need to realize that the people who bought the casual games like Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo are now older and more mature. Unless Nintendo does go with games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 I can't see myself buying anything from them until I have kids of my own.
