Hey Nintendo, cool story. I'm glad I didn't buy or even want one of these things, so I guess that means we're on the same page. I'm sure not making absurd amounts of money was in your plan, just like inflating the price because you meant to all along instead of because the positive pre-release hype meant you assumed it would sell like mad no matter what you asked for it.

If you've got any bridges for sale, I might buy those too.

I'll buy one when there are many more games on it and the battery life gets upgraded a bit or if they announce Final Fantasy 6 is actually going to be remade on it.

Aye, I think the tag line use of "glad" is a bit wrong. Never heard of a company saying they're glad they didnt sell loads. I think its highly probable they did have some strategy to try and keep the stock levels, well, stocked but I think any company wouldn't mind if they sold out!
They did sell loads though. Maybe you missed the part about 400,000 sales in the first week? That's a lot. Plus, this is just for one country, not the entire world.

Anyway, good for them. Making a shit-ton so stock wouldn't run dry and result in the Wii insanity.
I agree. And I find people's reaction to this news to be rather surprising.

First we have the Wii selling out and being hard to find for around two years, and people say "Nintendo did this on purpose to increase sales, they suck!"

Then Nintendo corrects this mistake for the 3DS and, for now at least, successfully has plenty of supply on hand so anyone who wants a 3DS can get one without running around to stores all day, camping outside in the cold, or submitting to the scalpers on eBay, and what do people say? "Nintendo is just saying that because the system didn't sell out, they suck!"

Well, we'll see when their next 'big' console comes out, if that's sold out all over the place, their claims of knowing demand and being able to be ready for it was bull :D

I wanted a 3ds, but Im just too poor. Its no big deal, and for the record, based on their statements before launch I think this WAS in some way planned. They wanted enough stock so there wouldn't be a massive demand with no supply. Thats how I understood it anyway.

They're probably just building a surplus supply for the holiday rush. It'll be the hot new thing for a gift at that point in time and THAT'S when they're gonna make a ton of revenue since they'll also have a ton of games released by that point

damn that was painful to read...

Anyway, I think 400,000's pretty good to start off. It'll be a while before I'll consider buying one though.

Well the library right now is terrible, so once some good games come out for it the sales will most likely skyrocket.
To be fair, this sold less than the DS, which was not exactly endowed with great launch titles.

Which is why I'm not buying the "we're glad the unit hasn't sold out" line. It sounds like Sony after the PS3 wasn't selling well. Nobody is seriously going to say "I'm glad our previous console/handheld outsold our current one by a sizable margin at launch!"

I actually agree with them.

One of the major deterring factors for getting a Wii for me was the lengths to get one. Everyone was sold out and eventually I just lost interest. With them keeping a constant supply, it makes getting a 3DS very easy and simple. Just as it should be.
And yet a deterring factor for you helped keep the Wii a hot item for that period of time. You know how I know that? At a time the other consoles were looking at price cuts, Wiis were still going for double or even quadruple retail on eBay.

Nintendo was "losing interest" all the way to the bank.

I don't know, if your plan for a product is to not make enough money to cover costs then you may have made a mistake somewhere.

On the other hand it could just be a lie.
I don't think it was an issue of not selling enough. They supplied more efficiently so stores wouldn't run out. Whereas the more common route normally leads to sellouts, they have actually increased the amount of sales with steady supply.

I might have to get a 3DS, will be my first hand held since I got a Gameboy Pocket on launch (my old gameboy died a month beforehand). It's a cracking piece of kit, the joystick is great, and there are a couple of good games out already for it, with some great ones on the horizon.

Although, in typical Nintendo fashion, it's area locked. Bad Nintendo!

It's not like the 3DS doesn't have a strong lineup for the next year however. Hell. I'd say it's better than the Wii, 360 and PS3 combined.

I can kinda see why the 3DS isn't selling as well as it could be. While Nintendo believe that Nintendogs is a top class game it just isn't. It's fun but that's it. And Pilotwings feels like the Wii Sports Resort of the 3DS. Something that should be with it. Street Fighter was pretty boring too. Ghost Recon, Lego Star Wars and Samurai Warriors are all nice tho. But compare Ghost Recon to Advance Wars or Fire Emblem? Not a chance. Samurai Warriors compared to Dynasty Warriors or even the likes of One Piece Unlimited Cruise. Lego games are all the same only with different chars/film liscences so yeah. Nothing worth buying.

Although once again. If Nintendo DID put Kid Icarus, Starfox and Zelda: OOT as launch (or even the likes of Advance Wars as I said prior) then all the people complaining about the launch will be complaining that Nintendo are relying on their old properties once again (even if two of these franchises have been barely used in the past 10 years. Unlike certain properties on Microsoft and Sony's consoles that have been overused in past years. Not naming any names. Lets just say they rhyme with Talo and Cod of Par.)

I tried one at best buy and not even 2 minutes in pilot wings I was getting serious headaches. We play games to get away from headaches not create them. Honestly I don't think the 3DS is capable to show us 3d safely as 3d with glasses does. I know I never got a damn headache from a 3D movie but this 3DS is like instant headache. Maybe that's why you can't sell out geniuses.

Sarcastic statement: Oh yes, because having shortages really didnt help make the Wii sell better.

(lol Perhaps all text based communications on forums should be handled in the Elcor from Mass Effect fashion)
