Nintendo Responds to Greenpeace Criticism

Greenpeace [http://www.nintendo.com] report that accused it of being environmentally irresponsible, saying that the Wii is the most energy efficient console of the current generation.

The latest edition of Greenpeace's debuted [http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/toxics/electronics] on the chart, the company still took heat for a wide range of environmental offenses, including its failure to establish a timeline for phasing out PVCs and BFRs, using little or no recycled plastic content in its consoles and its continued refusal to take a positive position on mandatory reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.

In a statement to Eurogamer [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/nintendo-responds-to-greenpeace-report], however, Nintendo defended its environmental practices, saying that the Wii is "notably the most energy efficient [console] of its generation."

"We would like to assure customers that we take our environmental responsibilities seriously and are rigorous in our commitment to comply with all relevant laws relating to environmental and product safety, including avoiding the use of dangerous substances in our manufacturing processes and ensuring the safe disposal and recycling of materials," the company said.

"We consider the environmental impact of our products over their entire life cycle, from planning to disposal. In the planning phase, for example, we make every effort to design energy-efficient products and select materials for component parts and packaging materials with careful consideration for the environment," it continued. "We also consider the importance of reducing environmental impact at end-of-life disposal by clearly indicating the materials used in each product to make recycling easier."

The Greenpeace ranking acknowledged [http://www.greenpeace.org/raw/content/international/press/reports/nintendo-guide-to-greener-electronics-14.pdf] that Nintendo has in fact taken some steps to improve its environmental record, including using PVC-free internal wiring in its consoles, banning phthalates, "monitoring" the use of antimony and beryllium and developing a low-power, Energy Star-complaint AC adapter for the Nintendo DSi. But the company "continues to score zero on all e-waste criteria" and was penalized for increasing its output of greenhouse gases despite committing to cut them by two percent each year.

So basically the Wii is like the Prius?
Bought by everyone, supposedly energy efficient, and does a lot of environmental damage when it's being built?

Exactly! I really hope people start giving Nintendo more of a hassle over this. I mean look at walmart, even they have made leaps and bounds to cut back on their fossil fuel use, and energy output in their stores.

I think the Wii is most energy efficiant because it has so little hardware it uses less energy then my cell phone.

Yeah, I too think that's the explanation: crappy hardware = uses less power.

you go girl.

yes the Wii is a girl, look it up.

and despite the energy efficiency is most likely related to its lack of horsepowers its still nice that they care about the environment, a big ol' hopenhagen badge from me.

First post nails it.

Bravo dude, bravo.

Yeah, heads up guys, Prius is NOT environmentally friendly, not that I really care, it just annoys me when people think they are so green and responsible and better than you for driving one.

Nowadays electricity can be produced without nearly as much environmental impact as it once was, and I don't know about you, but if I were an environmental nut I would care much much more about the dangerous chemicals something leaves behind more than how much of a renewable resource it consumes.

Don't you get it at all?

They don't care, at all, the energy efficiency is a symptom of its low processing power NOT a product of environmentally responsible forethought, that forethought would be displayed if they gave a rats ass about reducing the number of non degradable dangerous components of their system. Which they obviously don't.

You can't retroactively go back and say "oh yeah...we uh, were thinking of the environment when we did this" because they obviously didn't

BTW I am not an environmentalist, it can all burn for all I care, but I DO hate hippocracy, and lately, Nintendo.

PETA are a bunch of dangerous nuts, and Greenpeace has spawned some dangerous splinter cells, but I do think it is important to at least pretend you are making progress toward more environmentally friendly products.

And while I don't like Greenpeace as a whole, I think this report was a good idea, and that Nintendo don't give a rats ass about the environment.

well i did say "despite the energy efficiency is most likely related to its lack of horsepowers".

so yer i kinda get it, but its still the most selling console there is and its energy efficient, no matter if it was intended or not.

and we are already burning, I'm not an member of greenpeace or anything but please don't be so angry at the environment, it helps us make grain, which pigs eat, and that is how we get bacon, so yeah, the environment is a pretty cool guy.

the environment is a guy, look it up.

I think it's pretty obvious why the Wii is the most energy efficient - I wouldn't be surprised to see it being powered by a hamster in a wheel.
