Personally I don`t like handhelds but this new crap is going to sell in Japan. I can just imagine them with the 3d glasses on...

While they make a huge amount of money from a gimmick once again.

I know it sucks that Nintendo are gimmicky but its in their nature, they've been like it for the past century and you know what, I've had fun!. Its part of the whole Nintendo history to do stuff thats Left field to rivals, and thats good not only for Nintendo but for us as consumers.

We get a choice, do I want gaming in 3D on the train today?, maybe I don't but at least I have that choice, I'd prefer to have a variety of play things then to have a single thing to do. I could always read on the train instead?, but what if the only type of books available where romantic novels because no other genre of literature had been invented.

A while back I read that the translation of the word Nintendo into Enlgish is "Spirit of Play", I have no idea whether that is true or not but its a wonderful thought.

Gimmick or not, let us play, let us have fun.

Which gimmick would that be? If it's the original Virtual Boy, then yes that was silly. If it was the Wii or the DS, sales figures would like to disagree with you harshly.

Anyway this is a huge gamble for Nintendo, much like the original DS was, and they know it. It's why they're announcing it as a branch-off from the DS instead of a completely new system like the orginal DS was to the Game Boy Advance. However don't be confused and say something like this:

why the hell do we need so many versions of the DS?
Because this is not a new version of the DS. This is a new system that is only tangentially related to the DS. But apparently you didn't read the article.
I still don't see why Nintendo needs to be throwing handhelds at us literally every few months. DSi, DSi XL, now this? Seriously this needs to stop.

Ah... New Nintendo Console News: Stage 1. My favorite stage. I eagerly await the rest.

Stage 2: Announcement of one new installment each for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby and Pokemon. Additional obligatory vauge hints of similar return for obscure, largely untouched franchise from the past.

Stage 3: Announcement of new franchise aimed at audience other than 20-something male lifelong gamers makes people inexplicably angry.

Stage 4: Noteworthy lack of games where large, frowny-faced "jacked" men shoot guns at eachother on a planet entirely lacking primary colors leads aforementioned inexplicably-angry people to angrily declare that system is "casual" and a blasphemous affront to the proud warrior traditions of "hardcore gaming."

Stage 5: Sony announces a variation of the same basic idea, but with games containing more frowny-faced "jacked" men and no primary colors. It is immediately declared "hardcore" and "the ::Insert Nintendo Product Here:: done RIGHT!"

I really don't understand this bit, when did Sony take a Nintendo product and make it brown?.

I get the whole "hardcore" honking from the utterly demented internet crowd though, "Nintendo don't make serious games like Goldeneye anymore!".

3DS is just a temporary name for it. So it's what we'll be using until we find out the real name.
At which time everyone will hate it and complain "what's wrong with 3DS?" for 4 months and then stop caring.

I'm slightly saddened my thread has been killed by you evil evil reporters doing your jobs! :p I mean it was only 6 hours old and its been killed. The horror, the hororrrrrr!

On topic: I bet pokemon gen 5 for launch title along with okamiden and GS3 and if it does have the rumored GC level of power RE4:3DS as Capcom love whoring that game as much as they can :p
Thats why I abstained from making a thread about this before Escapist staff could get around to reporting it. Apparently that is how things work around here.

Beholden Nintendo! The new age cometh.

But the internet is far too bored already, so Nintendo are just making all their money from the stupids again.

Shame really, cos I'll probably buy one anyway...

Interesting concept.. Despite the fact that I don't see it getting very far...

Sucks that it's a handheld contraption though.. I tend to stay away from those... I'm not a big fan of having my neck locking up as I strain to see what the heck it is I'm doing. =\

Though I do understand why they didn't make this as some sort of console.. I could just imagine the walkthroughs for the games..

"And if you take a few steps to your left and look at the screen.. You'll notice a tiny pink elephant sitting on the table that you wouldn't have noticed otherwise... Oops make sure you don't step on your cat in the process!!"

im not a nintendo fan boy but i think its awesome that they just showed up apple in such a big way. apple was just talking shit on the ds not to far back and nintendo is set to release something thats quite capable of destroying the iphone and ipod touch.

I'm gonna have to ask: What was the point of bringing out the DSiXL, if 3 seconds later (pretty much) they're gonna release a completely different console? It's pointless!

I hear what you're saying, but first rule of business: Make as much money as possible. It's working for Nintendo. Hell, I'm pretty sure they've said they want a DS in every pocket.

On a side note, I just had a revelation. I like Nintendo. Seriously. But I just realized the last Nintendo system I bought was the SNES. I guess Sony and MS just speak to me more these days.

Sounds like it'll be pretty cool. Too bad the next Pokemon games will probably STILL look like Super Nintendo games, as Game Freak is incredibly lazy.
Actually, HeartGold and Soulsilver look quite nice. Characters are still sprites and it's not REALLY extravagant or anything, but it looks quite a bit nicer than the older games.

Yeah, I really like Nintendo too, and have all their consoles except the Wii, and the console I have taken to uni has been my DSLite (it would have resulted in a fight to the death between my dad, my brother and myself if I decided to take the PS3) but I am in two minds as to whether I buy the new DS because my DS has given me so much fun in between lectures and yet, I am scared that they are going to bring out another version two seconds after the original and you've ended up paying big money on the "older system" which could be now purchased cheaper. It seems like one big con to me.

Nintendo is biting on a apple that's already bitten 4 times. But I guess Nintendo works as "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." DSi XL is arriving though I wonder how well it does.

Have you seen the demo clips of the PS-Move's fighting game? It's Wii Boxing, but the guys are are tattoo'd cage-fighter douchebags and the palette is standard-issue next gen brown-on-gray "gritty" BS - which, of course, means it's "hardcore" ;)
