Yeah you can dog on the DS all you want but their heavily adopting Apple's strategy with their iPods. Update a lot, make em better, make em' cheaper, make em' a LOT better to hike the price up again, repeat steps.

Shit aside, it's a freaking 3D Gameboy 0_o it's not like "Gameboy DSHD1080BlooRey", it's freaking 3D. That's pretty tight for being on a handheld, where it belongs, avoiding the console altogether.

great idea. Now motion control will be completely impossible because the screen has to stay relatively still to not give you a headache. AND you're finger/stylus will fuck up the 3d effect completely. AND this method of 3D will make the price go even higher out of my price range. Thanks nintendo. You're just fucking brilliant.

I really don't understand this bit, when did Sony take a Nintendo product and make it brown?.

I get the whole "hardcore" honking from the utterly demented internet crowd though, "Nintendo don't make serious games like Goldeneye anymore!".

Have you seen the demo clips of the PS-Move's fighting game? It's Wii Boxing, but the guys are are tattoo'd cage-fighter douchebags and the palette is standard-issue next gen brown-on-gray "gritty" BS - which, of course, means it's "hardcore"

When I read this thread and saw all the negativity here I thought to myself, "Am I on the escapist or have C&VG changed their website to look just like the escapist and I'm at the wrong site?"

For christs sake people, its the first official announcment of its existnce, the thing hasn't been showcased yet. And you can bet your bottom dollar that this 'gimmick' will pave the way for what the next PSP (or whatever other handheld game system comes out) will do, there's a historical trend here to consider:

Shoulder buttons, I remember when they were decried as stupid and useless, everyone uses them now.
Analogue stick, that was labelled a gimmick and not for serious games, now hardly any games don't use them.
Touch screen, another gimmick, not so good for games or portable devices, though I'd suspect that Apple would argue that point.
Motion controls, a gimmick that'll never last, yet now both Sony and MS are releasing their own versions.

Finally getting to my point here, how about we wait and see how it works before going into a childish internet rage over the whole thing? Nintendo don't always get it right, but if/when they do you can guarantee that everyone else will follow.

I think this similarity to their Virtualboy is perfect. Nintendo is doubted by everyone. "You've tried this before," they'll all say, "You're mad. It won't work!"

...and then, when it's finally released, Nintendo triumphantly amazes everyone with an entire new dimension available in the palms of our hands!

...annnnd then it'll get old in about a month, dying in popularity as just another silly Nintendo gimmick.

and then they ad a 3d surround sound (or something) and sell it as a new and never before seen portable device
