(if you think this has been put in the wrong place please say so)

Have you ever noticed that what perants or governers or adults say about violent video games is allways the same thing?

video games were created by the devil, they cause violence some even go as far to say that microsoft flight simulater is to blame for 9/11!!

so if you have read anything by michal atkinson or the "frumpy mum" you will have noticed that neither provided any evidence? sure they say studies have been done but i know a university student who (out of curiosity) did a video game test

In one room three eight year old boys playing the ps2 game a dog's life, for those of you that cant remember in short you take care of a dog as he looks for his love and tries to get home so kinda homeward bound the game

in the other three eight year olds playing controversial game manhunt

after five hours gametime both groups were taken into seperate rooms with two buttons, they were told one button would open the other groups door and the other would turn on an air horn for five minuites

both groups chose the open door button

this test was reapeated several times with the same results

so what i want to know is

Do video games really make kids behave badly....if not why do people think so

People think it makes people act badly because they need a new scapegoat.
People will find anything else to blame for the problems they are faced with.
It has always been like this.

The evidence you've provided is just as inconsequential as the evidence that those you lambaste have provided. The experiment you have written about is merely anecdotal, unless the experiment has been published some where, writing about it was pretty much pointless (and if it has been published, well then fair enough).

If you regularly check the escapist news section you'll note that every four months or so a new study is finished, some state that there is little to no link between video games and violence where as other state that there is a link. It is still pretty much unknown if there is a link between media and violence in people.

I do though believe that there is a certain scapegoating on the games industry, with nearly no other form of media being singled out/ added as contributing factors when ever a violent crime is reported. I guess this is usually done because of the "interactive" nature of games.

When I was growing up they blamed the music. Then it was television. Soon movies were the media that was going to destroy humanity. Then it was the internet that was going to corrupt our youth. Now it is video games. Once people realize that "video game haters" are the vocal minority they will move on to something else.

People just can't blame people for crimes.

They have to think that something else made the person do it.

Some people are just bad.

More to the point they'd know they had only themselves to blame.

I remember one newspaper using a study about violence in video games to prove their point, but if you actualy read the study, you would find out that the results were that people enjoyed violent video games more, not that violent video games caused violence.

Moral of the story: People will allways bend things to suit thier needs, and utimately, games turning kids into mass murderers sells newspapers.

This paranoia about what is causing the world to go to hell in a handbasket has been around FOREVER. It just evolves with each generation.

They used to blame it on: them damn Nazis, black/white integration in schools, heavy metal, gangster rap, tween pop, WHATEVER. It's a symptom of parents scrabbling to find an excuse not to blame themselves for how f*cked up their kids are. That's all. I'm frankly quite sick of it, but I'm just praying it'll move on sometime soon and leave us all in peace.

That's an absolutely terrible experiment. The choices are so completely disconnected. And really, all it shows is that manhunt doesn't induce children to blow airhorns.

I have to say that watching violent movies, listening to violent music, and playing violent video games does desensitize someone to violence. I have been desensitized to it. Saying video games cause people to kill others is ignorant as well as silly.

I mean sure, I am desensitized to violence but I don't have some urge to kill someone. People need to realize that movies, video games, music, and books do not cause others to kill people.

Aw, when I saw this

Thought it was haiku format

That would have been cool.

OT: Nothing I can say here hasn't been said already. Inconclusive, as of so far, but people state things like it's a fact.

It used to be rock and roll, and probably something else before that. And when we invent sexbots they'll probably blame it on that too.

I stopped thinking there was a kernel of good at the center of everyone around... Oh, I'd say... Six years old.

Like so many before me have stated, it's just a scapegoat. It doesn't help that games are the newest medium, and that half of the idiots throw around accusations probably have never held a bloody controller in their life.

Statistically speaking, we are the least violent generation in history (or so I'm told).
Stop and think about that for a second....the generation that's decrying video games because they think games are turning us all into psycho killers are, statistically speaking, more violent then we are o_O
