No More Bastion Please - How Overwatch's "Play of The Game" Works

The weirdest Play of the Game I've gotten yet involved me as Torbjorn. I was just walking back to my turret after respawning, the thing killed the rival team's Widowmaker *and* got scrapped by said Widowmaker - and somehow, the server thought "Hey, that's cool!"

I mean, I can appreciate the occasional random compliment, but I know a few Soldier 76's and one Tracer that honestly would have deserved that highlight reel, if I'd been in charge of the PotG. Walking back to the front lines and seeing my turret's highlight on the map get shot off doesn't really warrant any kind of commendation.

It's super annoying whenever Torbjorn/Symmetra get play of the game. I feel that turret damage shouldn't count towards it. I want to see actual plays, not just someone jerking off while the CPU plays the game for them.
I'd say it depends on the player. I've seen Torbjorns who'd gotten an awesome hand on their Rivet Gun's drop-off point and who held their own as actually damage-dealing types without their turrets being taken into account.

Play of the game should also show objective based plays. Like solo pushing the escort car when everyone else is dead.

I'ts quite the shame because I like Bastion's gameplay the most, and the community hates me for it... Even if I'm playing against AI. I just like his defensive nature and I won't really complain if they nerf is clip amount or even his accuracy (though halving his accuracy may erase his usefulness anyway).

I remain to be a moderately decent Bastion player because I'm very mobile. Once I kill someone I know they'll probably go "Bastion on the ledge" so I move. If I see a Reaper teleport; I'll either gun him down or I'll press Shift and move my ass. I actually play.
I also know how to deal with facing him. Pharah isn't his technical counter but I have three-shot a few in my day because they're usually distracted by my teammates.

Yeah, and it'd be great if that got shown as Play of the Game, but it never is. I just wish they'd create some separation between player damage and turret damage. If you get play of the game, it should be because of a play that YOU personally made.
It could be worse, you know. I remember hearing that in the Beta, the system was initially set to factor in healing as well. If Bastion dominates the system for raw damage output, Zenyatta does for raw healing if any one of his users get to pop his ult more than two or three times per match.

So you've seen boring Plays where Torbjorn just runs back to his turret, and there's early ones of Zenyatta just standing there.

So... Yeah. Teaching a computer what is and isn't cool isn't easy. I wouldn't chalk that to Blizzard being unwilling to dish out proper commendations to actually skilled players, I'd explain that as them not knowing how you're supposed to go ahead and do that. Is a massive healing burst cool? Is a turret streak cool? Try telling a computer that Player Such-and-Such deserves the PotG mention because he skillfully navigated the map, timed his abilities expertly and single-handedly delivered a clutch save.

A computer can't understand tactics, as the article suggests. All it does is crunch numbers.

This is actually the only thing that bugs me. The main thing a person has to learn with Bastion is positioning, but this doesn't even apply to AI since they only have good aim going for them. He's the easiest hero in the game to steamroll AI with, so it feels like I'm barely getting to learn a new hero when the enemies are always mowed down as they get a couple feet from spawn. You're absolutely entitled to play however you want, but this is probably what's bugging people. I usually leave the game if there's a Bastion on my team when I'm playing defense against AI.

Its definitely got to be based on your standing on your team, I noticed in matches where I get a great headstart (like five to ten kills in the first few minutes) and proceed to get royally wrecked for a long period and not gain any kills, my medals started going down from gold to silver to bronze, which I think must mean it's because someone got more kills than me and so.
I've been paying closer attention, and yeah you seem to be right. Something must have went terribly wrong in that Roadhog game.

They could program it to learn by allowing players to vote on whether or not something is "cool". First couple of hours might have lame things but it should crowdsource the answer to what cool is rather than trying to figure it out on its lonesome with it inorganic brain jellies.

I can agree, but I tend to play in AI to cool down from a load of getting my ass kicked in QP, or simply to learn a hero I'm less familiar with, such as Mei or Mercy. There's no reason for you to ragequit just because you see someone playing a Bastion, except for simple ego.

My point had nothing to do with ego. For me, AI battles are for learning heroes (that's fine if it's about something else for others, but I'm not obligated to finish a game with them). I can't do that very well if the enemies are getting mowed down before I have much of a chance to do anything to them. It's not a ragequit, it's a boredomquit. It takes maybe 30 seconds to leave and get into a different match, so I'm saving myself a good 5 mintues. Besides, it's not like I'm hurting the team since playing Bastion against the AI is easy mode, regardless of the difficulty you actually selected.
