Ok why does every company trying to write a story about Greek Mythology always portray Hades as well evil? I've done a lot of research on this Greek God (thanks to Humanities class) and he wasn't necessarily evil, just vengeful. And if any Greek God is evil it's Poseidon. My proof THE ODYSSEY!

Hades Rules the Underworld
Underworld = Death
Death = Bad (To most people)

Through this logic, I conclude that they use footnotes for their movies and use the formula shown above to choose Hades as Evil.

Christianity came along and basically started trying to cast all religions within the same bounds that they used (Father, Son, Holy Ghost, Evil and Good, Heaven and Hell)

Other prominent examples include Hercules becoming the Son, Zeus being the Father, and various characters (usually Hermes) representing the Holy Ghost.

Other religions include Norse Mythology, Loki is not evil, he's a devious trickster, Odin is not exactly good, Thor is not the son figure, etc etc.

And of course Egyptian mythos, Ra is the Father, Horus is the Son, Seth is evil, Osiris sometimes gets cast as the holy ghost. Basically it's all down to the imposition of Christian values onto other cultures as they expanded. Nowadays it's just an accepted cultural norm.

Since Hades rules that one place under the earth where you go to die, many people associate that with the Hell of today, with fire, brimstone, and Satan poking you with a pitchfork.

Most people don't realize that Hades is just the place where everyone went after death, good or bad.

Another thing, Greek Gods were severely fucked up. Zeus had sex with so many women in completely idiotic ways. Ever hear the story where Zeus turns himself into water and impregnates a woman while she takes a shower? Zeus is the ultimate playa...

It's because Hades is the god of the underworld, and since all Christians assume underworld means hell, instead of just the afterlife, Hades gets associated with the devil.
Also, while Poseidon is an asshole, you can pretty much say that about any Greek God. Zeus is a dick, Athena is kind of stuck up, and don't even get me started on Ares.

Because he's the lord of the friggin' underworld?! Seriously, he just seems like a good character to make evil because of this. But I'm not really sure what games you're talking about; God of War makes basically every god evil, and I can't really think of any others that have Hades as the only evil one.

Good point about Poseidon, though, but there's no game of that, is there? If you're talking about in any media though, I would stick with my original claim.

If you're taking The Odyssey as a compairison than basically every Greek god is evil or atleast a fun loving bastard.

But that's why we love them so much, isn't it?

It's not Hell for starters, it's the Underworld

Bit of a difference.
Indeed, the Greek underworld contained three different 'areas' we'll call them.
I forget the names. (Except that Tartarus was the hell.)
One area was full of the wicked being punished.
One area was an empty unremarkle place where most people went.
And the last area was a heaven for the rightous.

hades was actualy the least evil god in fact the dreeks pitied him because he was suppose to be teh leader of the gods. in greek society the eldest son would inherit the fortune of the father so naturaly when zues hades and poseidon overthrew cronos hades thought that he should inherit olympus the seas and the under world but zeus insisted that it was he who freed poseidon and hades so he had earned the rite to own all three poseidon later joined the arguement saying that they should divide up all three teritories between them they agreed to this and drew straws to decide who gets what territory zues got olymus(the preferable territory) poseidon got the seas and hades was left hades with the underworld so. the god who should have ruled over everything ended up with the possession of hell. he was also not welcome at the table of olympus so people would actualy pity hades

tartarus was where all the damed souls went and where the titan lord was banished to
then there was the plain of souls that was just a feild where nothing exciting ever happened and your soul would just sit around and play monopoly or texas hold'em with other souls
last there was the isle of the blest where the good people went and played more entertaining games and enjoyed themselves

Poisidon wasn't evil as much as he was an arrogant dick. at least in the case of the oddysey, if he thought about what he was doing he may have changed his mind. He was mad that Oddyseus killed his son, but Polythemus was trying to eat him.

not true good sir! in the odyssey i beleive it was boreas god of the north wind who bring oddesseus to an island and gives him a bag of winds that contained all the winds that could deter him from his home so all he had to do is keep the bag closed

well he had every rite to be a dick in this situation odesseus also never thannked poseidon for killing the profit who was going to tell the trojans about the trojan hourse he also pretty much flipped off all the gods by ordering hiss men to not make sacrafices to the gods because he thought it was 100% him that made the trojan hourse work

Oh yeah, I remember that.

It's been a long time since I read that story. Last time I can remember I saw it as a mini series with Armand Assante as Odysseus.

He only rules the underworld because Zeus let his brothers pick where they wanted to rule after they defeated the Titans. Hades picked the earth thinking it would give him the most power to rule the land all lived on, Posiden picked the sea because water is a part of life and ruling that gave him power over living beings as well because ancient Greece had a lot of coastlines and people lived near the water. Zeus was left with the sky, he accepted it as his domain since he let his brothers pick first but he thought he was getting the worse one.

I'm just going to go ahead and be amazed that no one in this thread has thus far cocked up the names. All Greek thus far, no Roman.

Kudos.

Geeze, what's with the Christianity hate? Why would you think that's the only reason people think Hades is evil. He's the god of the underworld, so the natural assumption is that he's evil.

I remember reading that Hades was the god of wealth(all that gold and shit underground) and was considered to be a "terrible" god. Not evil but terrible.

Oh, and I've always been on Hades' side since I was little. Remember that Disney Hercules movie(should be Herakles, by the way)? I was rooting for Hades the whole time, and hated the ending.
