OMG OMG OMG! I really know the game that fits here!

FAR CRY 2. Yes, Far Cry 2...there are about 57 guard posts IN THE TOP HALF OF THE MAP ALONE, which all need to be scouted, there are tons of safehouses, hundreds of diamond briefcases to be found...

But make sure you save before the finale...because if you don't, you will be unable to go back and complete the game, because once you beat the game the credits play and all you can do is go back to the main menu and load your last save, which I assume is during the finale....GAAAAY....

I had to start a new file.

I cant replay The Minish Cap.

Beat it in one sitting, loved it, but couldn't make it back through.

Rise of the Argonauts.

The first 3 hours are torturous. Not to mention the level design sucks a fatty

One for being very bad-Shadow of the Colossus.
While I would hardly call Shadow Of The Colossus bad, I will never play through it again because it was so damn frustrating and difficult it make me swear, whine and hiss.

I don't want to put my poor flatmates through that again.
I actually didn't like it. Haha. It felt sluggish.

Bioshock. And I'm not really sure why.
Because the shock in Bioshock is gone on the second playthrough. I mean, Bio doesn't make a real stand-out title...

It looks like Borderlands, MGS4 and Arkham Asylum are dominating the "Loved It But Can't Do It Again" discussion; they've each been mentioned twice.

I haven't played any of the three...anybody wanna take a shot at briefly explaining why they're one-and-done games?

edit: Shadow of the Colossus mentioned a few times too, but the "frustratingly difficult" explanation would seem to suffice.
Borderlands:
The grinding is only fun for a certain amount of time. After playthrough 2 you've seen everything the game has to offer and killed thousands of each enemy type... and not much else.

Also, MW2 came out just as most people were finishing it.

Arkham Asylum:
Tricky one, this. The Joker's voice gets irritating and repetitive on second playthrough, the boss battles are lame, you know all the story twists... I can't work out why but I can't bring myself to play through it twice.

Brutal Legend is another one. I hated the RTS bits so much that I can't ever play through it again.

Two games I would never play through again would be Uncharted 1 and 2, they're both great games they just have no good replay value to me. I'm not sure what it is but it just never caught me the way I hoped for

My files corrupted after I beat it and I couldn't access them.

Not that I would ever put myself through the misery of replaying that fucking game.

I played through A Link to The Past once and never touched it again, same with all the half-life games, so yes. Personally I think that replay value and hours of playtime per-dollar were never as important as the industry acts like they are.

I was recently going through a thread that discussed games with great replay value, and I had a thought: what about games with *no* replay value? Now, I don't mean bad games, or games you personally didn't like and therefore wouldn't want to play again, I mean games that you actually enjoyed, but for whatever reason left you completely satisfied after one full playthrough and never really motivated you to pick it up again.

Which, I guess, leads me to two additional questions:

1. Can any game be considered great (or, at least, very good) if it doesn't make you want to play over and over?

2. Could there be a place in the gaming world for games that (this is going to sound weird, bear with me) cannot be played again once you finish it? What I mean is, a game that attempts to be a singular narrative and gameplay experience that the player shouldn't be able to...dilute, so to speak, with multiple playthroughs.
I think that replay value is, for the most part YMMV. I, for one, have even played AC1 more than once (shocking, I know.) What is usually meant by replay value are collectables, optional bosses, and multiplayer. I like to replay games that allow you to adjust the difficulty, like the Sin mechanic in the recent Valkyrie Profile, as it gives me a sense of accomplishment to slay a Relmstalker.

1. Of course. There are a lot of games I liked, but couldn't be bothered to play again, at least for awhile, like FFT:WoTL.

2. Not sure. I'd kinda feel like I wasted my money. While I think that great stories are important if we are ever to solidify Games as Art, the reason we play again is for the gameplay. TBH, I don't think that multiple playthroughs dilute the story anymore than reading a book a second or third time, you may even pick up something you missed. You are more likely to skip cutscenes though.

Well I do get through to like... the second element then I just get bored.

Game was a technical achievement and a masterful storyline that was longer than a lot of newly released titles at 8-10 hours, but for me, not completely replayable.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Played it, loved it, never touched it again for a second playthrough.

Also, games can be great even if there have no replay value at all, i.e., the entire Ace Attorney series. Although that hasn't stopped me from playing all of them twice...

Mass Effect. I loved it the first time but (not to brag) I've got an incredible memory so I remembered just about all of the dialog and how the scenarios turn out. And let's face it Mass Effect's combat isn't all that good.

Well then it obviously has *some* replay value, even if it's of the "why the hell am I doing this again?" variety.

1. To me, yes, but when purchasing a game one of the things I look at is how much replay will I get out of it. It sucks to buy a game only to beat it in 4-5 hours and it have no replay value. Fallout 3 & Oblivion (on PC) are good examples of games with good replay value - infinite mods and a simple construction set push these games over the top.

2. Yes, there are a few games that I have finished and felt a second play through just wouldn't be fun. I think games of this type are generally very linear or rely on a storyline that once it is complete, there's really no point in seeing it again - you already know the "big plot twist" or whatever. A lot of developers put incentives in for another playthrough, whether it is with achievements or unlockable content - that to me makes the game an even better deal. I can't off the top of my head think of any games that fit this because, as I said, I typically buy for replay value. One I was very disappointed with was Spore. After beating that, I don't think I'll ever touch it again.

True. But I meant "no replay value" as in "there's absolutely no challenge anymore." Especially considering I played them about a year or so later and still knew most of the trial progressions...

Well, I really meant *cannot* as in "the game cannot be physically played again" (and, yes I get that this would probably be difficult to implement/easy to hack). It's not the best example, because it's a flash game, but something like "You Only Live Once."
