Chess. And that IS the right answer.

Monopoly is literally the worst thing that happened to families ever. It's a horrible game. It's not even really a game. It's as much of a game as throwing dice and seeing who threw the bigger number. There are no actually viable decisions to be made in a game of monopoly. You roll the dice you buy or build on what you land on if you can. Rinse, repeat. Trading will always be a loosing proposition for one of the trade partners, turning it into more of a kingmaker move then anything else when trades actually happen.

Why yes I have lots of very strong opinions on board games and Monopoly in particular.

What was that message at the end? April 18th? Are we losing this show too!?
April 16th is our 200th episode and we're calling it good. It's been planned that way long before any of the other shows left, so you can believe they stole all of our thunder.

That being said, we're not leaving, just doing a new show for the Escapist. It's a cartoon that we've been working on for years now, and felt it was time to try something new. Keep in mind, we've been doing this for almost 4 years, and now between Chris living 3 hours away, all three of us having kids, and Nintendo restricting the topics Chris can even talk about, it was time.

I hope you stick around to watch our new show though!

No? OK, don't think about it then.
They're drinking one glass; it takes about 6 litres to pose a threat to a fully grown man. They'll be fine.

OT: Aww, the mean comments last week made Dan hide behind a mustache.

Monopoly is popular, and was one of few options for a long time (alongside risk). But it was never good.
I had fun with it as a kid, because my friends were fun. I would have a much better time if I had access to the modern board games available today.

I understand that the point of the show is to stir the opinion pot, and a controversial choice can be fun to defend or go against, but Monopoly is so far from being good that I didn't even had the interest to watch it.

Monopoly is a fucking horrible game, the only reason its popular is because the huge number of diverse, entertaining and well made board games only really get attention from people who already like them.

Question: Since the cartoon seems to be video game-based, does that mean there's going to be a limit to any Nintendo-based jokes/references considering Chris's position in relation to Nintendo?

Holy shit! I did not know that that was actually a thing... and now, I wish I still didn't know... Good thing I didn't know when I was underage... That would have been awkward...

Apples to Spinach guys. You might like one more, but there are very different reasons to enjoy each game.

Personally, I worship chess as one of the best games ever made. Not just because of its age, but the depth of gameplay as well. It's strategy at its finest, and while I wouldn't say it's easy to learn (moderately easy), it is completely difficult to master. Monopoly just is a bunch of dice rolls. The only agency you have as a player is to decide to buy something or trade something, but the fallout of making those choices is still determined by the random chance of the dice. You have almost as much agency when you play Candy Land.

Lets through Risk in there too since this just seems to be a list of boardgames that people that don't play boardgames think are good.

Come on Chess isn't even the best Chaturanga style game, and it certainly isn't even close to the deepest or most complex game.

Both are terrible as one relies entirely on RNG and the other one relies entirely on memorizing the 12 objectively best strategies.

Might as well be asking if Tic-Tac-Toe or War is the best game ever.

(personally I like Twilight Struggle...)

chess doesn't have "only so many moves" mathematically the possible combinations are nearly endless in chess.
Monopoly however has a high chance that two players will end up in an endless stalemate and continue playing until the board is flipped and a friendship is ended.

Was this an April Fools video? This was an April Fools video. Right? It has to be. "We're in the midst of the 'golden age of board games' and Monopoly, the game considered responsible for the 'dark age of board games' is the best. Also we seem to have forgotten how to microphone. ahahahahaHaHaHAHAHAHA!"

But... then why Chess? Chess is considered one of the purest of the intellectual 'abstract games'... simple mechanics, heavy strategic element, greatly relies on predicting and misleading your opponent, no random factors weighing the outcome on a roll or shuffle... yeah, it's a little dry, but is it weapons-grade bad like Monopoly? You couldn't have done another 'classic' troll pick like old-school Risk or Life or Sorry?

I'm going to go with "It was all a terribly misguided prank".

My personal favourite is Settlers of Catan with the Cities and Knights expansion. Cities and Knights adds a lot more depth to the game IMO. There's a good amount of RNG, but I've learned to combat this by having a wide variety of numbers instead of just clustering around a few of the best.

Chess will always be my favourite board game. There is just something majestic and pure about it, something no other board game has captured for me. It's also the perfect example of 'easy to learn, (very) difficult to master'.

Try Go. It's even easier to learn than chess as the pieces don't move unless they are captured, but it is hard as hell to truly master. It's a total change in thinking when you have to concern yourself with territory rather than the opponent's pieces.
